GERMANY: NECKARWESTHEIM: POLICE DETAIN ANTI NUCLEAR DEMONSTRATORS

Police in Germany have detained more than seventy anti-nuclear demonstrators after they tried to block a shipment of nuclear waste.
There were some minor clashes between police and demonstrators.
The protest is over the transferral of nuclear waste to a plant in northern Germany for storage.
More than 25 thousand police have been deployed to make sure the controversial shipments reach their final destination.
Police estimate 400 protestors gathered at the nuclear plant in Neckarwestheim, southern Germany Friday.
Their aim - to block a shipment of nuclear waste bound for the Gorleben plant on Monday 3rd March.
The three containers left the nuclear plant in Neckarwestheim for the railway loading station some kilometres away.
There it will become part of convoy of six shipments, including two from France.
The waste will travel via rail to the Gorleben plant near Hanover.
But not if the demonstrators have their way.
At least half a dozen tried to stop the trucks' passage by forming a human chain across the road.
Other protestors secured themselves to barrels outside the Neckarwestheim plant.
Minor scuffles broke out between police and protestors.
More than seventy people were detained.
Germany's interior minister warned anti-nuclear activists Thursday to call off plans to block the transport of atomic waste to the Gorleben storage facility.
The Government has ordered the deployment of 25,000 police to protect the shipment and control demonstrators
Newspapers say it's the largest such deployment since World War II.
Despite the huge police presence - protestors remain defiant.

We are not the kind of people who suddenly decide to spontaneously start to protest against such transport. We are people who have been fighting this sort of activity for years. We take a long term view and see this action as part of a wider campaign.
