Waterworks in the Unesco World Heritage Mountain Park Wilhelmshoehe in Kassel, Germany. They have fascinated visitors since 300 years.
The park's water displays are an outstanding and unique example of the art of monumental water engineering practiced in the era of European Absolutism. There could be no doubt that the Hercules statue represents the finest monumental sculpture of early modern times both technically and artistically. Nowhere else in the world has there ever been a hillside park layout like this, of comparable size and featuring a water architecture as accomplished as the one created under Landgrave Karl in the years since 1691.

Schloss Wilhelmshöhe is a Neoclassical palace located in Bad Wilhelmshöhe (de), a part of Kassel, Germany. It was built for Landgrave Wilhelm (William) IX of Hesse in the late 18th century. Emperor Wilhelm II made extensive use of it as a summer residence and personal retreat. Today, the palace houses the art gallery Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, part of Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel (de). Since 2013, Schloss Wilhelmshöhe has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe.
Beginning in the 12th century the site was used as a monastery. Under Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse 1504-1567 it was secularised and used as a castle. This castle was replaced by a new one from 1606 to 1610 by Landgrave Moritz. The current Neoclassical Schloss Wilhelmshöhe was designed by architects Simon Louis du Ry and Heinrich Christoph Jussow (de) from 1786 to 1798 for Landgrave William IX of Hesse.
As king of the French puppet state Kingdom of Westphalia, Jérôme Bonaparte renamed it Napoleonshöhe and appointed his Head Chamberlain Heinrich von Blumenthal as its governor, with instructions to supervise extensive renovations. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, the Prussian King offered the defeated Emperor Napoleon III accommodation there.
From 1899 to 1918, Wilhelmshöhe was the summer residence of the German emperor Kaiser Wilhelm II. In 1918, after the armistice ended World War I, the Oberste Heeresleitung, the High Command of the Germany Army under Paul von Hindenburg was moved here from Spa (Belgium) to organize and lead the withdrawal and demobilization of the German troops. It remained at Wilhelmshöhe until February 1919, when it moved to Kolberg.
The middle tract of the castle was mostly destroyed by Allied bombing during World War II. The first reconstruction was made in 1968-1974 by the functionalist architect Paul Friedrich Posenenske. He completely reconstructed the exterior but changed the structure of the interior for its new function as an art museum. From 1994 to 2000 another renovation was made to bring it closer to the original structure.
Since 2013, the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, which includes the palace has been a World Heritage Site of UNESCO. Today the Wilhelmshöhe Castle Museum houses the antiquities collection, the Gallery of the Old Masters (which includes one of the world's largest Rembrandt collections) and the Graphic Arts Collection.

he Löwenburg is a built in 1793 pleasure palace in Kassel Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. The castle, built as an artificial castle ruin , stands above the Wilhelmshöhe Castle in the southern part of the Bergpark and thus south of the visual axis Schloss Wilhelmshöhe- Herkules at about 350 m above sea level. NN on the eastern edge of the Hoher Habichtswald . The Löwenburg served its builder landgrave Wilhelm IX. from Hesse-Kassel as a private retreat and in 1821 also his tomb. In terms of art history, the facility is considered groundbreaking, as one of the first important buildings of the Gothic Revival in Germany.
The castle, which was inspired by a hilltop castle, was designed by Heinrich Christoph Jussow between 1793 and 1801, ie centuries after the actual construction of castles in Germany. It is the imitation of a medieval knight's castle and was built, romantically historicizing, deliberately as an artificial ruin. Initially planned only as a ruinous tower with outbuildings, eventually a complete castle complex was created, which is grouped around a courtyard. The plant served the landgrave as a residence for himself and his mistress Karoline von Schlotheim . In 1821 he became Elector in 1803Wilhelm I raised landgrave buried in a crypt under the castle chapel. The lion castle was built from the beginning of less weather-resistant hawk tuff , which was available near the site and is easy to work.
Until 1945, the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Force flew several attacks on Kassel. The city suffered the heaviest attack on October 22, 1943. Due to the armaments industry and above all the dense development in the old town area with the slightly fire-catching half-timbered houses Kassel moved according to the Area Bombing Directive early on the list of cities, for a firebombing attack especially appeared suitable. This was the keepthe Löwenburg mostly destroyed (only the stair tower with some remains of walls remained) and large parts of the facility, including the kitchen and connector construction, severely damaged. Reconstruction in the post-war years was rather expedient and characterized by functionality rather than attention to detail. In 1957 extensive reconstruction work was carried out in the women's building, which had the goal to be able to take up sheltered inventory from the destroyed keep. The works are not finished yet. The keep is currently being reconstructed and is scheduled to reopen in 2022 with a 25 meter viewing platform.
The interiors consist of four princely residential apartments in baroque style. In an armory there are numerous historical weapons and plate armor of the 16th and 17th centuries. The castle chapel is equipped with numerous objects of medieval churches from the northern Hessian environment and has a crypt with the tomb of the elector under the choir. Numerous pieces of equipment of the historical collection, which was outsourced during the war, are still in depots or are exhibited at Schloss Friedrichstein . Their return should not take place until the reconstruction of the castle is completed. The interiors can be visited as part of guided tours.
