Harvard University is a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts, established 1636, whose history, influence and wealth have made it one of the most prestigious universities in the world.
Established originally by the Massachusetts legislature and soon thereafter named for John Harvard (its first benefactor), Harvard is the United States' oldest institution of higher learning, and the Harvard Corporation (formally, the President and Fellows of Harvard College) is its first chartered corporation. Although never formally affiliated with any denomination, the early College primarily trained Congregationalist and Unitarian clergy. Its curriculum and student body were gradually secularized during the 18th century, and by the 19th century Harvard had emerged as the central cultural establishment among Boston elites. Following the American Civil War, President Charles W. Eliot's long tenure (1869–1909) transformed the college and affiliated professional schools into a modern research university; Harvard was a founding member of the Association of American Universities in 1900. James Bryant Conant led the university through the Great Depression and World War II and began to reform the curriculum and liberalize admissions after the war. The undergraduate college became coeducational after its 1977 merger with Radcliffe College.
The University is organized into eleven separate academic units—ten faculties and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study—with campuses throughout the Boston metropolitan area: its 209-acre (85 ha) main campus is centered on Harvard Yard in Cambridge, approximately 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Boston; the business school and athletics facilities, including Harvard Stadium, are located across the Charles River in the Allston neighborhood of Boston and the medical, dental, and public health schools are in the Longwood Medical Area. Harvard has the largest financial endowment of any academic institution in the world, standing at $36.4 billion.
Harvard is a large, highly residential research university. The nominal cost of attendance is high, but the University's large endowment allows it to offer generous financial aid packages. It operates several arts, cultural, and scientific museums, alongside the Harvard Library, which is the world's largest academic and private library system, comprising 79 individual libraries with over 18 million volumes. Harvard's alumni include eight U.S. presidents, several foreign heads of state, 62 living billionaires, 335 Rhodes Scholars, and 242 Marshall Scholars. To date, some 150 Nobel laureates and 5 Fields Medalists (when awarded) have been affiliated as students, faculty, or staff.
Harvard University is a private institution that was founded in 1636. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 6,694, its setting is urban, and the campus size is 5,076 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. Harvard University’s ranking in the 2016 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, 2. Its tuition and fees are $45,278 (2015-16).
Harvard is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just outside ofBoston. Harvard’s extensive library system houses the oldest collection in the United States and the largest private collection in the world. There is more to the school than endless stacks, though: Harvard’s athletic teams compete in the Ivy League, and every football season ends with “The Game,” an annual matchup between storied rivals Harvard and Yale. At Harvard, on-campus residential housing is an integral part of student life. Freshmen live around the Harvard Yard at the center of campus, after which they are placed in one of 12 undergraduate houses for their remaining three years.
In addition to the College, Harvard is made up of 13 other schools and institutes, including the top-ranked Business School andMedical School and the highly ranked Graduate Education School,School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Law School and John F. Kennedy School of Government. Eight U.S. presidents graduated from Harvard College, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. Other notable alumni include Henry David Thoreau, Helen Keller, Yo-Yo Ma and Tommy Lee Jones. In 1977, Harvard signed an agreement with sister institute Radcliffe College, uniting them in an educational partnership serving male and female students, although they did not officially merge until 1999. Harvard also has the largest endowment of any school in the world.

Noam Chomsky Lectures on Modern-Day American Imperialism: Middle East and Beyond
Noam Chomsky, an emeritus professor of linguistics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a well-known political activist critical of U.S. foreign policy, traces modern-day American imperialism to its earliest roots, 25 years before the American Revolution, and he explains how the United States has lived up to its reputation as the most frightening and dangerous country in the world.

LT. Col. Robert Bowman at American Scholars Symposium pt 1
Robert M. Bowman (born 1934) was the former Director of Advanced Space Programs Development for the U.S. Air Force in the Ford and Carter administrations, and a former United States Air Force Lieutenant Colonel with 101 combat missions. He holds a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Nuclear Engineering from the California Institute of Technology.
Despite his involvement with space programs and defense, he emerged as an early public critic of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI, also aka Star Wars) during the Ronald Reagan administration. On The MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour, he called it the ultimate military lunacy, easily overwhelmed and vulnerable.[3] Bowman founded the Institute for Space and Security Studies, and its publication Space & Security News (1983) (ISSN 1071-2569), and authored two books on the subject of SDI. He is also a critic of an outgrowth of the SDI program, the Bush administration's proposed National Missile Defense.[4]
For several years he has been active with Veterans for Peace and Vietnam Veterans Against the War as a speaker.[5][6][7] He had also been a member of the Peace Commission of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington.[8]
In 1998, Project Censored cited Bowman's article Our Continuing War Against Iraq, in the May 1998 issue of Space and Security News as one of the few (along with Bill Blum of the San Francisco Bay Guardian and Dennis Bernstein) covering what they deemed the fifth most censored story, U.S. Weapons of Mass Destruction Linked to the Deaths of Half a Million Children.[9] The WMDs referred to are the biological samples sent to Iraq from the United States up to 1989, and use of depleted uranium during the Gulf War.
He is a member of Scholars for 9/11 Truth, founded in January 2006 by James H. Fetzer. Because of the beliefs Bowman holds regarding U.S. complicity in the September 11, 2001 attacks, he is also part of the movement to impeach George W. Bush. He spoke at a September 11, 2005 rally in New York City held by members of the New York 9/11 Truth Movement.[10]
More recently, Dr. Bowman joined Veterans for 9/11 Truth.

Inside the State Department: Scholars Reflect on Working for the Government
American Academy of Religion Annual Meeting
November 19, 2017
Boston, Massachusetts
What's it like to work in the US Department of State? How is academic knowledge about religion practical to public policymakers? What are the ethical implications of engaging?and of declining to engage?in such work? What seems to be the future of such work in this area. Three of the panelists recently completed a year or more as an AAR-Luce Fellow in the US Department of State: in the Office of Religion and Global Affairs, Evan Berry focused on the environment, and Jerome Copulsky on anti-Semitism, refugees, and training; and in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, Todd Green focused on Islamophobia.Rounding out the panel are Elizabeth Prodromou, former Vice-Chair of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, who brings expertise on international policy and conflict resolution; and Robert Albro, a sociocultural anthropologist, who chaired the American Anthropological Association's Ad Hoc Commission on the Engagement of Anthropology with the U. S. Security and Intelligence Communities. AAR-Luce Fellowships are made possible through a generous grant from the Henry Luce Foundation.

Negotiation is answer, scholars say
Harvard China forum speakers advise against starting trade war As the trade tension escalates between China and the United States, US experts are calling for negotiations to settle the disputes. “The two sides need to sit down and have serious talks. We still have time before we are actually in a trade war, “ said Ira Kasoff, former US deputy assistant secretary of commerce, at the annual Harvard College China Forum held in Boston, Massachusetts, on Saturday. Kasoff said he believes a trade war would have a very negative effect on the two countries’ economies and the global economy as a whole. He explained that because the Section 301 tariff list formally announced by the US Trade Representative would not take effect until the end of May, there is a period for public comment and discussion. “And what President (Donald) Trump added yesterday (to impose tariffs on an additional $100 billion in Chinese goods) hasn’t even been formally proposed yet, so there’s some time, at least six weeks...

Beyond Black and White: Race in the Boston Public Schools
Basic Black hosts an hour-long forum with panelists and an audience in the WGBH studio. The discussion explores how the Boston public school system can maintain a commitment to diversity and provide a quality education. Major areas covered in the discussion include: the re-segregation of schools and how this impacts the achievement of students of color; multilingual education and the obligation to address the needs of a swelling immigrant student population; the re-examination of school assignments; and the impact of the recent court decision that the voluntary desegregation plan in Lynn, MA is unconstitutional.
One of the goals for the forum is to provide a setting where the academy meets the community--a gathering that promotes conversations and ideas among Boston's scholars, parents, education activists and students.
Liberation Psychology and Social Change: An Introduction to Ignacio Martín-Baró
On November 11, 2013, the Boston College Center for Human Rights and International Justice hosted this event with Center Associate Director, Professor M. Brinton Lykes. This presentation and dialogue presents some of the key ideas developed by social psychologist and Jesuit priest, Ignacio Martín-Baró, and the challenges that his life and death present for psychologists and activist-scholars in the 21st century.
The Center for Human Rights and International Justice at Boston College addresses the increasingly interdisciplinary needs of human rights work. Through multidisciplinary training programs, applied research, and the interaction of scholars with practitioners, the Center aims to nurture a new generation of scholars and practitioners in the United States and abroad who draw upon the strengths of many disciplines, and the wisdom of rigorous ethical training in the attainment of human rights and international justice.
