Vienna Austria | Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens
This beautiful UNESCO-listed palace, complete with huge gardens, ornate fountains, wide green lawns and walking paths, is a lovely destination for nature lovers and history buffs alike. But besides simply strolling the grounds, you can take part in a medley of historic and cultural activities here. In order to truly appreciate the property, you should know a little more about it. The name #Schonbrunn means “beautiful spring” in German, and refers to the artesian well that once served the royalty living here. While these days you won’t be drinking from the spring, you can still appreciate the serene beauty of this unique destination and easily imagine how marvellous it was during its heyday.
The history of Schonbrunn goes all the way back to the 16th century, when the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II bought the land and the mansion on it, and converted it into a hunting ground stocked with a bestiary of animals and exotic birds. The area was used as the royal hunting grounds for about 100 years, and the royal family lived in the mansion when they visited. It wasn’t until the mid-17th century that this original building was added to and Schonbrunn started to take the shape and size it has today. Finally, it was Maria Theresa who drastically remodelled the palace after receiving it as a wedding gift in 1740. Later, Franz I ordered the facade to be redecorated in a neoclassical style, which is what we see today. Over the years, Schonbrunn has seen more than its fair share of historical events. Emperor Franz Josef was born and also died here. After World War I, the palace officially became a museum. But that didn’t mean it was obsolete. Allied forces were stationed here during World War II, and throughout the 20th century Schonbrunn was the site of numerous important political meetings, including one between Kennedy and Khrushchev in 1961. The palace and the grounds received UNESCO status in 1996, and both remain impeccably looked after. But the history and design of the building are only part of the allure that make Schonbrunn a must-see sight in Vienna. It also has a rich cultural calendar throughout the year. Today, Schonbrunn is a one of the centerpieces of Austrian history and culture. To start with, you’ll certainly want to take one of the guided tours, which is the best way to get to know the history of the palace and all the different things to do here. It’s also the only way to get inside to see the opulence of the palace interiors. But even beyond the different areas of the palace, each of which has its own special connection to history, there are numerous activities to take part in and other things to see. Many festivals and special events take place at Schonbrunn throughout the year, from classical music concerts to art exhibitions and even things like the Vienna Citrus Festival.......

Schönbrunn Palace - Schloß Schönbrunn ???????? Vienna Tourist Guide Travel & Discover
At the end of the 17th century Emperor Leopold I commissioned the gifted Baroque architect Bernhard Fischer von Erlach to built a palatial hunting lodge for the heir to the throne. On the site of the old imperial château de plaisance a splendid edifice was to arise.
Half a century later under Maria Theresa Schönbrunn Palace was to become the magnificent focus of court life. From that time onwards it played host to the leading statesmen of Europe. Although Austria is now a republic, Schönbrunn has remained a place of political encounter at the highest level.
The magnificent architecture and the exquisite décor of its state rooms marks Schönbrunn out as a cultural treasure and tourist attraction of the first order. (from schoenbrunn.at)

Gloriette, Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna, Austria, Europe
A gloriette is a building in a garden erected on a site that is elevated with respect to the surroundings. The structural execution and shape can vary greatly, often in the form of a pavilion or tempietto, more or less open on the sides. The largest and probably most well-known gloriette is in the Schönbrunn Palace Garden in Vienna. Built in 1775 as the last building constructed in the garden according to the plans of Austrian imperial architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg as a temple of renown to serve as both a focal point and a lookout point for the garden, it was used as a dining hall and festival hall as well as a breakfast room for emperor Franz Joseph I. The dining hall, which was used up until the end of the monarchy, today has a café in it, and on the roof an observation platform overlooks Vienna. The Gloriette's decorative sculptures were made by the famous Salzburg sculptor Johann Baptist von Hagenauer. The Gloriette was destroyed in the Second World War, but had already been restored by 1947, and was restored again in 1995. The Gloriette is dedicated as a Monument to Just War, that which leads to peace. With the succession to the throne of Maria Theresa came first the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748) and later the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The way of writing of the year uses a Latinization of the Greek letter Φ (phi) for 1000. In Ancient Rome it was also common to represent the number 1000 by the Greek letter phi instead of with an M. An essential part of the inscription is the addition of AVGVSTO and AVGVSTA, used as a link to the first Roman emperor and state god AVGVSTVS by his heirs and successors as finally the Habsburgs in their functions as emperors of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation. There's a lesser known 90% size replica of the original Schönbrunner Gloriette about 23 km from Sanghai, China. (picture on the linked page). The word gloriette can also refer to a large birdcage, similar in form to the architectural gloriette, often made out of wrought iron or, more rarely, wood. In the garden of the Priory of Notre-Dame d'Orsan, many wood gloriettes decorate and overshadow the alleys. Climbing plants are often associated with this type of construction.

At the end of the seventeenth century Emperor Leopold I commissioned the Baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, who had received his training in Rome, to design an imperial hunting lodge for his son, Crown Prince Joseph, later to become Emperor Joseph I. Replacing the château de plaisance built on this site for the dowager empress Eleonora of Gonzaga in 1642, it was to grow into a palatial imperial residence over the course of the eighteenth century.
Schönbrunn Palace was the main summer residence of the Habsburg rulers, it is located in Hietzing, Vienna. The 1,441-room Baroque palace is one of the most important architectural, cultural, and historical monuments in the country. Since the mid-1950s it has been a major tourist attraction

Kaiser Franz Josef I., ließ dieses Palmenhaus 1880 bauen.
Dieses erlebte in den Weltkriegen eine besondere Geschichte bis zur Generalsanierung 1986 in der zweiten Republik Österreich.-

Zoo Vienna - Tiergarten Schönbrunn - The oldest zoo in the world
Visit Tiergarten Schönbrunn, the Vienna Zoo located near the famous Schönbrunn Palace. Built in 1752 at the order of the Holy Emperor Francis I, the Schönbrunn Zoo is the oldest in the world. The baroque architecture of the menagerie-buildings, built after the Versailles model, is still preserved.
Very few zoos worldwide are housing giant pandas. In Schönbrunn, you can see four of them. Another particularity of the Vienna Zoo is its rainforest house, where the visitors can experience the climate and admire the rich flora and animal life of the Amazon rainforest.
