The renowned Brazilian-born British artist Olivier Mourao
Olivier Mourao has been a professional working artist since the early 1960s. Born in 1946, Mourao began painting at the age of eight. By the time he was twelve years of age, he was already a prodigious portrait painter
in Brazil.
Mourao studied Fine Art at the Guignard School of Art, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. In 1965, at the age of nineteen, he held his first exhibition of drawings and portraits at the L’Atelier d’Art, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. This was followed by exhibitions at the Salon Art Museum in 1966 and the Salon Ouro Preto in 1967.
Mourao was also commissioned to paint frescos and murals for the Church of Saint Francis, Pampulha, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. His art is on display in the Dona Beja Museum, Araxa, Mina Gerais, Brazil.
His paintings, designs and sculptures have appeared in more than 700 publications, books and 74 exhibitions. His work is collected by art connoisseurs and celebrities and is displayed alongside the great masters in private and public collections around the world.
‘Painting with Paper’ is an intimate exhibition of ten recent works inspired by Mourao’s friends, beautiful people, objects and surroundings.
Mourao’s unique style is influenced by the legendary artists whom he knew, including Pablo Picasso, Francis Bacon, Salvador Dalí and his wife Gala. The influence of Picasso and Dalí can be seen in his work. Hints of Matisse and Chagall are present as well.
Mourao creates intense moments of passion in his works through his very unique process: He produces his artwork by painting directly from the tube creating an image straight onto the canvas, or using handmade paper and then creating a collage with pieces of coloured paper as though brushstrokes. In this exhibit, ‘Painting with Paper,’
spontaneity and simplicity play a key role.
Idi Amin, o gorila solitário / The lone gorilla from Brazil
Conheça o gorila Idi Amin, até então o único de sua espécie na América do Sul, e a vida dele no zoológico de BH. Reportagem de Robson Leite com imagens de Atônio Pereira em maio de 2007. Ele morreu em 07/03/2012 após ser anestesiado, segundo informações do laudo da necropsia do animal, divulgado pela Escola de Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, no site da Prefeitura de BH. A morte do animal foi provocada por insuficiência renal crônica, associada a poliartrite crônica ativa-bacteriana. Estimava-se que tivesse 39 anos. O corpo foi entregue ao Museu de História Natural da PUC Minas para ser empalhado e exposto ao público.
A cirurgia foi realizada no dia 7 de março deste ano e, segundo laudo, após 60 minutos de aplicada a anestesia, o gorila sofreu a primeira parada respiratória, que foi revertida com a introdução de cloridrato de doxapram. Cinco minutos depois, o animal apresentou nova parada respiratória. Os médicos veterinários tentaram realizar o procedimento de ressucitação, sem sucesso.
Idi Amim era o único representante da espécie que vive em cativeiro na América do Sul. Ele era a estrela do zoológico de Belo Horizonte. Em 2011, o animal ganhou duas companheiras, depois de viver 27 anos sozinho. Kifta e Imbi são inglesas e vieram para mudar a rotina de Idi. Mesmo com a alegria das novas novas namoradas, o gorila apresentava um quadro crônico de artrose no tornozelo esquerdo. Em dezembro, passou pelo tratamento de uma ferida no antebraço esquerdo. Foi tratado com antibióticos e anti-inflamatórios para curar uma infecção no machucado.

Meet the gorilla Idi Amin, hitherto the only of its kind in South America, and his life at the BH zoo. Report by Robson Leite with images of Atônio Pereira in May 2007. He died on March 7, 2012 after being anesthetized, according to the animal necropsy report, released by the Veterinary School of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, on the website of BH City Hall. The animal's death was caused by chronic renal failure associated with chronic bacterial active polyarthritis. It was estimated to be 39 years old. The body was handed over to the PUC Minas Natural History Museum to be stuffed and exposed to the public.
The surgery was performed on March 7 this year and, according to a report, after 60 minutes of anesthesia, the gorilla underwent the first respiratory arrest, which was reversed with the introduction of doxapram hydrochloride. Five minutes later, the animal presented a new respiratory arrest. Veterinarians tried to perform the resuscitation procedure without success.
Idi Amim was the only representative of the captive-living species in South America. He was the star of the Belo Horizonte zoo. In 2011, the animal gained two mates after living 27 years alone. Kifta and Imbi are English and came to change Idi's routine. Despite the joy of new girlfriends, the gorilla had a chronic picture of left ankle arthrosis. In December, she underwent treatment of a left forearm wound. He was treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to cure a wound infection.
Ouro Preto in Brazil - World Heritage Site by Unesco ( Full HD )
Ouro Preto (from Portuguese, Black Gold) is a city in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, a former colonial mining town located in the Serra do Espinhaço mountains and designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its outstanding Baroque architecture.
Founded at the end of the 16th century, Ouro Preto (meaning Black Gold) was originally called Vila Rica, or rich village, the focal point of the gold rush and Brazil's golden age in the 18th century under Portuguese rule.
The city contains well-preserved Portuguese colonial architecture, with few signs of modern urban life. Modern construction must adhere to historical standards maintained by the city. 18th- and 19th-century churches decorated with gold and the sculptured works of Aleijadinho make Ouro Preto a prime tourist destination.
The tremendous wealth from gold mining in the 18th century created a city which attracted the intelligentsia of Europe. Philosophy and art flourished, and evidence of a baroque revival called the Barroco Mineiro is illustrated in architecture as well as by sculptors such as Aleijadinho, painters such as Mestre Athayde, composers such as Lobo de Mesquita, and poets such as Tomás António Gonzaga. At that time, Vila Rica was the largest city in Brazil, with 100,000 inhabitants.
In 1789, Ouro Preto became the birthplace of the Inconfidência Mineira, a failed attempt to gain independence from Portugal. The leading figure, Tiradentes, was hanged as a threat to any future revolutionaries.
In 1876, the Escola de Minas (Mines School) was created. This school established the technological foundation for several of the mineral discoveries in Brazil.
Ouro Preto was capital of Minas Gerais from 1720 until 1897, when the needs of government outgrew this town in the valley. The state government was moved to the new, planned city of Belo Horizonte.
Ouro Preto is also a university town with an intense student life. The Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (Federal University of Ouro Preto or UFOP) has approximately 13,000 students. Many of them live in communal houses that are somewhat similar to fraternity houses as found in North American colleges. These communal or shared houses are called repúblicas, of which 66 belong to the university, called repúblicas federais, and 250 are privately owned (repúblicas particulares).
The repúblicas system of Ouro Preto in unique in Brazil. No other university city in the country has exactly the same characteristics of the student lodging found there. In many ways, the lodging is similar to that found in Portuguese universities such as the Coimbra and the tradition may have come from there. Before universities were founded in Brazil, Coimbra was where most of the rich students who could afford an overseas education went to. Each república has its own different history. There are repúblicas in which the freshmen, also known as bixos (misspelling of bichos, Portuguese for animals), have to undergo a hazing period, called batalha (battle), before being accepted permanently as residents of the houses. The final choice of the freshmen, called escolha, has to be unanimous among the senior students of the house.
The Museu Mineralógico Da Escola De Minas (Mineralogy Museum) can be of special interest to visitors. It belongs to the Mining School of the prestigious UFOP. The School opened its doors on 12 October 1823. The Museum is located at the Praça Tiradentes (No. 20), in the town's historical center, and contains a rich assortment of minerals on display, including precious and semi-precious gemstones and large crystals. Security is tight, however (for example, no cameras are allowed), due to the incalculable value of the gemstones and ores on display.

Ouro Preto Day 2, Part II
The second half of my final afternoon in Ouro Preto. I could not have asked for more perfect weather. It was warm, sunny and not very humid.
Many more smiling faces, good food, beautiful churches and amazing views.
If you were prepared, I feel that you could more or less see all the highlights in one very full day. I would suggest two days to not feel rushed while being able to explore the less popular areas.
I enjoyed how former government buildings were repurposed as schools, student housing or museums. It was the ultimate recycling program!
My pousada was perfect and all the staff were amazing and ready to help with all my gringo questions. Thank you very much!

Israel Da Costa, January 24, l969, in the city of Quijingue, Bahia, northeastern Brazil. Today is an artist, Brazilian painter.
Born into a family of evangelical Christians, the first son of Valdemar Martins de Oliveira, farmer. Having grandparents José Martins de Oliveira and Alexandrina Maria de Jesus, the mother of the artist Lourivalda da Costa Oliveira, who was the daughter of Paulo Celestino da Costa, farmer and political Alzenor Celestina de Abreu.
The artist lived the first years of life on a farm of his maternal grandfather Paulo Celestino da Costa, the District of Tatu, the city of Quijingue, adjacent to Euclides da Cunha, Bahia, Brazil.
In the mid 70's, the artist's family moved to the small town of Filadelfia, State of Bahia, on the trip saw it and put the images in memory and some time later reproduced in the drawings, were the first works of the future artist .
In the early '80s, due to financial difficulties he was facing his father became a dealer in emeralds, influenced by the news of the discovery of a deposit of emeralds in Goias, his family moved to a town in the savannah near a mining emeralds, where his family began to earn a living.
In l986, he traveled to Sao Paulo, where he visited the MASP, Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo, visits to museums were frequent, there came into contact with works of masters such as; Portinari, Di Cavalcanti, Renoir, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Monet , Manet, Degas, Picasso, Miro, Salvador Dali, among others. Life in the metropolis was difficult for a young man without resources, who spent most of his time in seeing works of art.
Returning to Rio de Janeiro, was inspired by the great masters he had known in museums, had within it the idea of becoming an artist of color, when he painted his first pictures, a few copies of the masters who had met in museums. Began drawing, using gouache, watercolor and finally after the oil painting.
Israel Da Costa, again traveled to Sao Paulo in l987, staying first at the home of his uncle Levi Celestino da Costa, after the home of his aunt Eloy Celestino da Costa, sister of his mother. It was the habit of drawing the artist while traveling through the city.
In Sao Paulo, enrolled in the course of drawing and painting at the School Pan American Art, dividing his time between art school, or visiting museums, galleries and artists' studios, was frequent visitor to the MASP, and arrived copy the design of some works.
Also attended classes in drawing and painting of the French Colette Pujol, academic painter of French descent.
Lessons of Pan-American School and visits to the workshops served to add some style to the technique of the future artist, since that time has developed a unique style.
At eighteen the young artist had to leave the city of Sao Paulo, there was more to stay there. The amount of money his father sent him the mining of emeralds of Goiás was getting short, you could not pay the bills and buy materials for painting, I could not continue his studies in Sao Paulo.

Her mother was a pot maker, her father was a farmhand, and her late husband a cowboy. Her early figures, also introduced by her into the region in the early 1970s, consisted of oxen, horsemen, birds on branches, small Nativity scenes, which were finished with tabatinga -- a kind of white clay. She would also make more modern goods than the usual regional selection of earthenware: sets for bean dishes, ashtrays, and dinner sets. When she became a widow she went to live with her children in Santana, where she then began in 1978to create large-scale wedding couples, women breastfeeding, matrons and girls, which became known all over Brazil. To increase the size of her sculptures, she increased the size of her furnaces on her own and diversified the tones of clay used in the faces and clothes of the figures or dolls. At first the heads of these large figures were removable, an idea from her original concept of water jars. After a time, the heads joined the body and eventually became part of the sculptures, losing all utility traces and finally moving on to the urban standards of the aesthetic field. Isabel sells directly to buyers in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo, and is the only artist in the entire Valley of Jequitinhonha, besides Ulisses Pereira Chaves, to achieve at least fair prices for her work. She gives extraordinary expression to the mestizo, white or black faces of her women, always with great dignity and as if in deep thought. In the late 1990s, she told me that she makes figures of a poor woman and a rich woman, since everyone is a child of God. As frequently happens when a skilled master is found in the popular milieu, she would train disciples, at first those in her own home. Her son-in-law, João Pereira de Andrade (1952), today with his own themes, creates more sensual half-naked women, as well as girls at windows, men, poor kids, pregnant mothers, and wedding couples. Isabel's son Amadeu Mendes -- who still work partime as a peasant helped his mother in the initial preparation of the figures before he married Mercina, and is also a good animalist.
Her daughters Maria Madalena and Glória are skilled in the technique of building a more secure figure, and her granddaughter Andréa Pereira de Andrade (1981) lends a lot of personality to the characters that she makes from clay and paints in sophisticated tones of gray, white and black, and earth colors. Also from Isabel's school we can mention Placedina Fernandes Nascimento, who died young, and who would give a remarkable shape to the slanting eyes and sometimes angular faces of her more dramatic breastfeeding mothers. Marina de Mello e Sousa (SAP, 59, 1995) says that Isabel shares her knowledge with the pleasure of the genuine master with anyone who visits her, and so created around her a school of cerasmists, involving every member of her family living in Santana and many other people from the place. Izabel has a participated in exhibitions in capitals in Southeast Brazil since the 1980s, and her work is found in the main museums of popular art in Brazil.

Volunteers in Mission AUMC to Shade and Fresh Water Project, Belo Horizonte, Brazil
Twelve volunteers in mission traveled to Belo Horizonte, Brazil to work with the Shade and Fresh Water Project at San Gabriel community. The Brazilian Methodist Church made children its number one priority and created the Shade and Fresh Water Project as a national network to assist local Methodist Churched to develop activities for children as an alternative to the streets.

In the year l996, held a solo exhibition at Gallery Frei Confalone in Goiânia, Goiás, where he showed pictures produced between the years l994 to 1995.

Israel Da Costa, January 24, l969, in the city of Quijingue, Bahia, northeastern Brazil. Today is an artist, Brazilian painter.
Born into a family of evangelical Christians, the first son of Valdemar Martins de Oliveira, farmer. Having grandparents José Martins de Oliveira and Alexandrina Maria de Jesus, the mother of the artist Lourivaldo da Costa Oliveira, who was the daughter of Paulo Celestino da Costa, farmer and political Alzenor Celestina de Abreu.
He spent the first years of life on a farm of his maternal grandfather Paulo Celestino da Costa, the District of Tatu, the city of Quijingue, adjacent to Euclides da Cunha, near the place where the armed revolt of Canudos, in which followers of Antonio Conselheiro faced armed forces one of the bloodiest conflicts have occurred in Brazil.

Returning to Rio de Janeiro, was inspired by the great masters he had known in museums, had within it the idea of becoming an artist of color, when he painted his first pictures, a few copies of the masters who had met in museums. Began drawing, using gouache, watercolor and finally after the oil painting.
Israel Da Costa, again traveled to Sao Paulo in l987, staying first at the home of his uncle Levi Celestino da Costa, after the home of his aunt Eloy Celestino da Costa, sister of his mother. It was the habit of drawing the artist while traveling through the city.
In Sao Paulo, enrolled in the course of drawing and painting at the School Pan American Art, dividing his time between art school, or visiting museums, galleries and artists' studios, was frequent visitor to the MASP, and arrived copy the design of some works.
Also attended classes in drawing and painting of the French Colette Pujol, academic painter of French descent.
Lessons of Pan-American School and visits to the workshops served to add some style to the technique of the future artist, since that time has developed a unique style.

Lama o crime vale no Brasil - A tragédia de Brumadinho
Na sexta-feira do dia 25 de janeiro de 2019, a barragem do Córrego do Feijão pertencente à Vale rompeu em Brumadinho - MG, espalhando um mar de lama pela região. O saldo da tragédia até 22/04: contabilizados 229 mortos e 45 desaparecidos, além dos tantos animais soterrados pela lama - alguns sacrificados por impossibilidade de resgate - e do Rio Paraopeba, um dos afluentes do rio São Francisco, totalmente contaminado.
No campo do debate são muitas as propostas e posições apresentadas, desde a reestatização da Vale, passando pela CPI da mineração até a exclusão da atividade minerária no país – sobretudo em Minas Gerais onde o quadrilátero ferrífero e o aquífero se misturam, representando um risco para os rios, logo para o abastecimento da população. O documentário se propõe a reunir as principais propostas, as percepções e a sensibilidade em torno do tema.
Este documentário de intervenção política foi produzido de forma independente, trazendo um considerável número de depoimentos de moradores da região, militantes de movimentos sociais, especialistas do tema e representantes de órgãos oficiais, além de materiais relacionados com o episódio.

Born in Tapiratiba (São Paulo) in 1927, Loio-Pérsio lived and worked in Curitiba (Paraná), São Paulo (São Paulo), Vitória (Espírito Santo), Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais), Petrópolis (Rio de Janeiro), Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro), Paris (France), among other cities. In 1955, he graduated in the Law School in Curitiba. His first solo exhibition was in 1947, at the age of 20. Between 1959 and 1961 he participated in the Bienal de São Paulo [Sao Paulo Biennial]; had a solo exhibition at Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro [Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (MAM-RJ)] and was chosen to participate in three of the most important artistic events back then: the 30th Venice Biennial, the 2nd Paris International Biennial and in the group exhibition of contemporary art held by Guggenheim Museum in New York. In 1960 he also participated and was awarded in the second edition of Inter-American Biennial of Mexico. In 1963 he was granted a travel award by the Salão de Arte Moderna [Salon of Modern Art] and traveled to Europe. In his final years, he received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His last exhibition, entitled Brasil Sempre, took place in Anna Maria Niemeyer Art Gallery and simultaneously in the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes [National Museum of Fine Arts of Rio de Janeiro] in Rio de Janeiro; posthumously in 2011, his work was featured in the Europalia art festival (Brussels, Belgium). Among the various public and private collections that his work integrates are: the Roberto Marinho Collection, Gilberto Chateaubriand Collection, Israel Klabin Collection, Marcio Espíndola Collection, João Sattamini Collection.
