• Locate the parking space – is the space legal and is it approximately 1 ½ times the size of your car
• Mirror, signal, shoulder check and ensure that it is safe to stop and that there aren't any vehicles tailgating you
• Pull up beside the car (3 feet from the car—in front of the parking space you wish to back into--and stop
• Line up the rear bumpers—you will be able to see the rear corner of the vehicle through your rear right window
• Put the car into reverse so the reverse lights activate telling traffic that you are going to park
• Put on your right signal to communicate to other traffic that you are going to park
• Locate your 45° degree reference point, which should be straight out form the door post—the reference marker can be any fixed object
• Release the brake pedal and back slowly, steering rapidly all the way to the right without any throttle and backing until your are facing your reference point
• At this point the rear bumper of the stationary car should be in line with your steering wheel
• Straighten the wheels and back until the bumper of the parked car is ½ to 1/3 the way down your hood or the front of your car clears the parked car
• Steer rapidly all the way to the left and back until the car is straight in the space
• Stop
Put the transmission in “Drive” or a forward gear and pull forward
• You should be able to see the top of the rear bumper of the car in front of you
• When park your vehicle should be 6-9” inches from the curb
• Secure your vehicle by applying the parking brake and putting the transmission into park (or a forward gear if you’re driving a manual transmission)
When pulling up to parallel park off the other vehicle, take note of how far the other vehicle is from the curb. If the vehicle is far from the curb, you will have to drive farther into the space. If the vehicle is close to the space, you will have to drive less deep into the space. If it is a wide vehicle, that too will dictate that you drive farther into the space.

Why Are 96,000,000 Black Balls on This Reservoir?
I took a boat through 96 million black plastic balls on the Los Angeles reservoir to find out why they're there. The first time I heard about shade balls the claim was they reduce evaporation. But it turns out this isn't the reason they were introduced.
Huge thanks to LADWP for arranging this special tour for me. Next time let's put the GoPro on the submersible!
The balls are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) which is less dense than water so they float on the surface of the reservoir even if they break apart. They are 10cm (4 inches) in diameter and contain about 210ml of water. So the main reason they are on the reservoir is to block sunlight from entering the water and triggering a chemical reaction that turns harmless bromide into carcinogenic bromate. This effect occurs with prolonged exposure to bromate so regulators insist that levels be kept below 10 microgram per liter on average over a 12 month period.

Beware the Left Turn Signal - it could be the proverbial wolf in sheep's clothing on your road test - watch the video.
Turning left is one of the most challenging skills for new drivers. Left Turn Signals give the right-of-way to left turning vehicles; however, if the left turning signal is red, and the through traffic light is green, you CANNOT proceed.
Some Left Turn Signals are easy to identify, others are more difficult. Learn how to identify these here.

Driving Test #3: Parallel Parking
Learn more at
How many moves should it take for a driver to Parallel Park? How far should the tires be away from the curb? This video answers those questions and demonstrates how to Parallel Park.
This video shows the driver parking behind a lone vehicle. While this approach is used in the Washington state driving test, it is not the only way the test is performed. Rather than parking behind a lone vehicle, the driver might be asked to park between two stanchions.

Automatic milking -- Common practice on dairy farms
In this article an overview of historical development of automatic milking, as well as the current situation and perceived challenges and opportunities for future development are discussed.
Since the first commercial systems appeared in 1992, automatic milking systems (AM-systems) have been installed at an increasing rate. No other new technology since the introduction of the milking machine, has aroused so much interest and expectations among dairy farmers and the periphery. Reduced labor, a better social life for dairy farm families and increased milk yields due to more frequent milking are generally recognized as important benefits of automatic milking. Without doubt automatic milking changes many aspects of farm management since both the nature and organization of labor is altered. Manual labor is partly replaced by management and control, and the presence of the operator at regular milking times is no longer required. Visual control on cow and udder health at milking is, at least partly, taken over by automatic systems. Facilities for teat cleaning and separation of abnormal milk are incorporated into the automatic system and several adaptations are needed to accommodate continuous milking. Cow management including routing within the barn, the opportunity for grazing and the use of total mixed rations is altered. A high level of management and realistic expectations are essential to successful adoption of automatic milking. Results from commercial farms indicate, that milk quality is somewhat negatively affected, although bacterial counts and somatic cell counts remain well below penalty levels. In terms of quality control, AM-systems offer extra means to assure milk quality and food safety. No adverse effects of the transition have been found for body condition, lameness or teat condition. Automatic milking systems require a higher investment than conventional milking systems. However increased milk yields and reduced labor requirements may lead to a decrease in the fixed costs per kg milk. In recent years the first mobile automatic milking systems appeared on dairy farms in Denmark and The Netherlands. Automatic milking has gained widespread acceptance and is now estimated to be in use on more than 8000 farms in over 25 countries worldwide.

Dresden Demolition Derby 2012 | Heat 3 Straight Stock

Straight Stock derby in Dresden Ontario Canada 2012.
Clinton Road
This is a test using my camera behind a wind screen to see how it deals with the wind noise and how the dark tint of the screen affects the picture. The results are not bad IMO, the wind noise is less than it was with the homemade wind filter, and aside from water spots (duh) on the windscreen the pic came out well.
For my route I chose the infamous Clinton Road in West Milford, NJ - alleged home to midgets, albinos, midget albinos, Nazis, Witches, Satan worshippers, Klansmen, mutant Jungle Habitat survivors, and Lord knows what else. I did NOT see any of these things on my ride, and in truth the road seems less creepy than it did on a previous trip several years ago. This is probably due to the fact that the road is much better maintained now than it was back then. Sharing the road with joggers and bicyclists and anyone else not wearing flannel is reassuring too. Hey THEY'RE not dead - I'll probably be fine. I did, however, see a man who LOOKED like an albino - or at least like Rutger Hauer - driving an old Chevy Nova with Cragar wheels in the neighboring town of Greenwood Lake, which you have to admit is pretty creepy.
