BEST HIKE IN SWITZERLAND | Schynige Platte Hike | CAT MEFFAN
Last week we hiked for over 6 hours from Schynige Platte to First. After being so exhausted from all the travelling lately I found it tough at times, but felt SO amazing for completing it.
A few tips for anyone wanting to do this hike...
- Start early to avoid too many people on the route.
- We were based at Hotel Bodmi in Grindelwald. Super traditional and lovely owners. They arranged all of our passes.
- Take enough food for the whole day. There is a cafe on route, but the offer is limited.
- Allow an extra hour to go up to the Faulhorn - epic views!
- Wear boots or hiking shoes that support your ankles. It's pretty rocky and gravely at times.

About the In A Nutshell video series.
In A Nutshell is a series of very short videos. Often, bloggers want to illustrate a blog article with videos. Very long videos distract the readers from reading the blog. Often, it is difficult to find suitable videos that are short enough for fitting in an article. This is where the In A Nutshell videos come into play.

Switzerland's Jungfrau - Grindelwald First to Schynige Platte - The Panorama Way
Switzerland's Jungfrau & Grindelwald First to Schynige Platte Panorama Way
Switzerland’s Jungfrau Region (Berner Oberland) renders you speechless – we can’t when we said “Wow” so often. Made me dance at Bachalpsee, lol! (see video).
We defy you not to get frothy about the dreamy landscapes, geological wonders & superb Swiss engineering. Seilbahns (cable cars) deliver you upon high to walk or marvel. Walking's not mandatory - enjoy sumptuous views from the cafés at First or Schynige Platte.
The Jungfrau & Valais Regions are home to the tallest & most vast glacial region in Switzerland. I assumed the Aletsch Glacier was the best-of-the-best. The Jungfrau delivers equal awesomeness!!! Glaciers are retreating with global warming. Lower glaciers may disappear in the next 20 years so best get to the Jungfrau now.
We take the cable car from Grindelwald to First. Picture postcard chalets, with red geraniums flowerboxes, nestle into the verdant green slopes & clanging cowbells drift into the cable-car from far below. Soon forgotten as the Swiss Alps & glaciers, take centre stage. Rick Steves reckons this is where Heidi lives. More like Bollywood! We shared the magnificently engineered First Cliff Walk with a wedding & hoards of early tourists.
Next stop was magical Bachalpsee, mirroring the “Imperial Crown” – Finsteraarhorn (4,274m/14,022ft), Fiescherhorner (4,049M) & Schreckhorn (4,078m) . Bollywood's blockbuster DDLJ (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) was filmed nearby – catnip for Indian tourists.
Japanese tourists are smitten – many marry here.Who wouldn’t want an infinity view of the Swiss Alps in their wedding photos?
Moving onto Falhorn at 2,681m / 8,796 ft (our highest point for this walk) we have superb 360 degree views of The Jungfrau & Interlaken. Snow's fallen overnight. The trail's quiet at the end of the season & will close soon.
Pace slows as I film the majesty - 4,000m / 13,000 ft + mountains, glaciers, hanging U-shaped valleys. Grindelwald’s glacial canyons & surreal blue glacial lakes…
We keep a steady pace to catch the last train from Schynige Platte.
Our reveries are punctuated by the sonic boom of fighter jets, practising overhead. They take defence seriously (hiding jets inside mountains).
100 years ago Italian labourers drilled a rail tunnel through the Eiger & Jungfrau for the impressive Jungfrau Top of The World Train (stops 704m / 2,310ft short of the Jungfrau’s 4,158m summit). Without a train pass it’s hundreds of dollars. Pick a good weather day to see the start of the 23km Aletsch Glacier (Alps' longest).
We make our way to Schynige Platte (great picnic spot for a shorter walks arriving by train) passing through a huge boulder field to catch the train back down to Wilderswil (interchange for Interlaken & Grindelwald). It's a track & pinion (Cog) railway = steep & slow (60 minutes to reflect on a stellar day).
Swiss trails are magnificently maintained & signposted. Select the level of walk from a sauntering walking trail, mountain trail (white-red-white) to alpine routes (white-blue-white). The weather was so fabulous we had no excuse but to walk every day!!

Schynige Platte - Top of Swiss Tradition
HIKING SCHYNIGE PLATTE (MOST BEAUTIFUL HIKE EVER)
Hey Asighttosee'ers!
Today I and a friend I met at my hostel, went for a hike at Schynige Platte! It was the most beautiful hike I've ever done in my entire life! I couldn't believe those views! Absolutely insane! It was 20 francs to use the one way cable car with the discount card we got from our hostel, and its 32 one way without it, but totally worth it! The train ride took about an hour on a cog train. Have you ever hiked in Schynige Platte? Tell me about your experience in the comments! I hope you loved it as much as I did!

Schynige Platte Ridge Switzerland | Top of Swiss Tradition
Schynige Platte is a mountain ridge and a viewpoint in the Jungfrau region close to the city of Interlaken. To get to Schynige Platte, you will need to take a historic mountain train nostalgic cog railway from the Wilderswil station. The train will take around one hour to reach on the top of the mountain; there is a panorama restaurant, hotel and children play area. This enjoyable experience starts from the moment you step in the open coaches of the cog railway, the higher the train climb, the view gets more beautiful and breathtaking.
Schynige Platte is also a starting point of many hiking tours, the most famous one hike to Grindelwald first via Faulhorn.

Details about this place: The Schynige Platte (Scheinige Platte on the old Siegfried Map) is a small mountain ridge and a viewpoint in the Bernese Highlands and belongs to the Schwarzhorn group. The mountain range consists of three peaks: Gumihorn (2,099 m (6,886 ft)), Tuba (2,076 m (6,811 ft)), and the closest summit next to the viewpoint, Geiss (2,067 meters (6,781 ft)). The viewpoint lies at an altitude of about 2,000 meters (7,000 ft), at the western end of a prominent ridge of the Schwarzhorn group, which separates the valley of the Schwarze Lütschine from Lake Brienz.
It is notable for its hotel and, since 1893, its mountain railway, one of the highest in Switzerland. In good weather conditions, there are views to many surrounding mountains, including the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, and other giants of the Bernese Alps. Also, the town of Interlaken and the two great lakes of Thun and Brienz are visible to the north, 1,500 meters (4,900 ft) lower.
The area is accessible via the Schynige Platte railway, which runs from Wilderswil, where the connection is made with Bernese Oberland railway trains from Interlaken. The railway reaches a height of 1,967 meters (6,453 ft) at the terminus station, on the south-facing slopes of Geiss[citation needed] summit. Southwest of the station is a hotel and mountain restaurant, at a height of 1,983 meters (6,506 ft). Northeast of the station is the Schynige Platte alpine botanical garden, specializing in the display of, and research into, the high altitude flora of Switzerland.
A number of short loop trails extend north from the train station, reaching several viewpoints, all within one kilometer from each other. Directly above the station and hotel, and overlooking the valleys of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, is the Geiss summit (2,067 meters (6,781 ft))[citation needed]. Further north, and overlooking Interlaken and the two great lakes, are the Tuba (2,076 meters (6,811 ft)) and Oberberghorn (2,069 meters (6,788 ft)) summits. The highest summit in the Schynige Platte area, between the Daube and Geiss summits, the tower-like Gumihorn peak (2,099 meters (6,886 ft)), cannot be reached by pedestrians. The Schynige Platte is also the starting point for the popular hiking trails to Loucherhorn, Faulhorn or First which is connected to Grindelwald by a gondola lift.
Administratively, the area is shared between the municipalities of Gündlischwand and Gsteigwiler, the tripoint between the municipalities of Bönigen, Gündlischwand, and Gsteigwiler being on the Tuba summit. All the municipalities are in the canton of Bern.
