Scotiabank Theatre Ottawa ditches DDR, sells beer
Cineplex and Scotiabank have a chain of ten theatres known as Scotiabank Theatre. Many locations, however, have an arcade that is poorly maintained with several broken games.
Scotiabank Theatre Ottawa is notorious for this. It had flagship games like Guitar Hero Arcade and Mario Kart Arcade GP, but the theatre neglected maintenance once these broke down. Although Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA was available since 2006, its pads were quickly worn out due to frequent use. Instead of putting the effort to fix them, the theatre (then called SilverCity Gloucester) kept charging for the broken game and never fixed it, despite dozens of requests by many gamers. It was temporarily withdrawn for a few months in 2016, with the issue persisting. The game was retired in spring 2017.
Still, a number of games remain problematic. The Fast and The Furious and Need For Speed Underground have monitor issues and broken force feedback, respectively. Time Crisis 4 is often out of service, at least for one player out of two. Super Alpine Racer, which began at Lansdowne VIP, is now 134¢ and missing both hand grips.
Here is some of the history of problems with Scotiabank Theatre:
• DDR X at Scotiabank Theatre Toronto (bad pads):
• Cineplex VIP Cinemas kicks out Steve Jobs! (cinema review): (The Super Alpine Racer game was at Lansdowne, but quickly lost one hand grip; it moved to Scotiabank Theatre Ottawa, but now, the price hiked and both grips are gone.)
• Scotiabank Theatre Ottawa opens, Yoyo's Yogurt Café coming soon: (This is a news report; I point out that the Super Alpine Racer game is still missing grips in June 2016.)
There are more issues that I plan to publish later. In short, at four Scotiabank Theatre locations (Ottawa, Saskatoon, Toronto and Winnipeg), arcade games are routinely left in a broken condition and I have requested a refund multiple times while nothing improves.
Beer is now sold at Scotiabank Theatre Ottawa, but it's a limited menu with no lounge. As with the Toronto location, beer can be brought in any auditorium. Toronto also offers other choices like wine, though, and it has a large lounge, so it offers a much better experience.
In any event, Cineplex and Scotiabank should ensure that its arcades are working well. With billion-dollar profits from beer and much more, there is no excuse.
