CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The comet makes impact in spectacular fashion, destroying the Eastern Seaboard of the United States.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker) directed this science-fiction disaster drama about the possible extinction of human life after a comet is discovered headed toward Earth with the collision only one year away. Ambitious MSNBC reporter Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni) stumbles onto the story, prompting a White House press conference. United States President Beck (Morgan Freeman) announces the government's solution: a team of astronauts will travel to the comet and destroy it. The team leader aboard the spaceship Messiah is Spurgeon Tanner (Robert Duvall), who was once the last man to walk on the moon. However, the mission fails, splitting off a chunk of the comet, now due to land in the Atlantic with the impact sending a 350-foot tidal wave flooding 650 miles inland, destroying New York and other cities. The larger part of the comet, hitting in Canada, will trigger an E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event), not unlike a nuclear winter as dust clouds block out the sun and bring life to an end. President Beck reveals Plan B: a cavernous underground retreat constructed to hold one million Americans, with most to be selected through a national lottery. Since teenage amateur astronomer Leo Biederman (Elijah Wood) discovered the comet, his family gets a pass to enter the cave, but his girlfriend Sarah (Leelee Sobieski) and her parents will be left behind. Meanwhile, still in space, Spurgeon Tanner devises a plan for a kamikaze-styled operation that could possibly save the Earth. Special visual effects by Scott Farrar and Industrial Light & Magic.

Inspired by Pam Warhursts’s TED talk entitled “How We Can Eat Our Landscapes”, Langley set in to enliven its municipal landscapes with flowers, vegetables and fruit. The gardens harmonize with the town’s historic buildings; they’re similarly small-scale, eclectic, and colorful. Bounteous hanging flower baskets brighten First Street, a street-side rain garden educates passersby on how to deal with run-off in a pleasingly visual way. Second Street is lined with gardens that ebb and flow through the seasons, beginning with hundreds of daffodils in April, and ending with asters and ripening pumpkins in October. The gardens are planned and planted with the help of a dedicated band of volunteers, with the intent to please and engage Langley residents, as well as visitors, taking full advantage of the wide variety of plantings that thrive in our Northwest maritime climate.

Driving from Annapolis, to Queenstown, Maryland on US 50
Annapolis (/əˈnæpəlɪs/) is the capital of the U.S. state of Maryland, as well as the county seat of Anne Arundel County. Situated on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River, 25 miles (40 km) south of Baltimore and about 30 miles (50 km) east of Washington, D.C., Annapolis is part of the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. Its population was measured at 38,394 by the 2010 census.
This city served as the seat of the Confederation Congress (former Second Continental Congress) and temporary national capital of the United States in 1783–1784. At that time, General George Washington came before the body convened in the new Maryland State House and resigned his commission as commander of the Continental Army. A month later, the Congress ratified the Treaty of Paris of 1783, ending the American Revolutionary War, with Great Britain recognizing the independence of the United States. The city and state capitol was also the site of the 1786 Annapolis Convention, which issued a call to the states to send delegates for the Constitutional Convention to be held the following year in Philadelphia. Over 220 years later, the Annapolis Peace Conference, was held in 2007. Annapolis is the home of St. John's College, founded 1696; the United States Naval Academy, established 1845, is adjacent to the city limits.

Located in Pacific Palisades, Temescal Gateway Park is one of the most popular parks in the Santa Monica Mountains. The park encompasses 141 acres of oak and sycamore canyons, ridgetop views, and access to miles of trails in Topanga State Park, Will Rogers State Historic Park, and the 20,000-acre Big Wild.
Park amenities include easy to moderate trails, picnic tables and grassy areas, restrooms, a camp store, meeting rooms, an auditorium, and classrooms. Earth Adventure Camp for children is held each summer at Temescal Canyon, as well as many educational and outreach programs for children throughout the City (see Temescal Field Science Program below). The Temescal Canyon Conference and Retreat Center provides overnight accommodations for up to 100 people, and the architecturally distinctive Temescal Dining Hall serves as a beautiful location for events of all kinds. For information about hosting a special event at Temescal Gateway Park click here.
The Reverend Dr. Charles Holmes Scott developed what is now Temescal Gateway Park for the Methodist Church in 1922 as a West Coast center for the Chautauqua movement. Originated in 1874 on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in Southwestern New York State, Chautauqua assemblies were aimed at challenging the minds and spirits of its participants by offering families seasonal programs of lectures, music, elocution, and open discussion of public issues, literature, and science. Some of the canyon's earliest structures are still in use. Built in 1922, the building known as the Temescal Camp Store was two buildings-- a grocery store complete with a butcher shop, and the local post office. The Presbyterian Synod purchased the property in 1943 and used it as a private retreat center until the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy purchased the property in 1994.

The National Unification Council will cease to function. No budget will be earmarked for it and its personnel must return to their original posts. The National Unification Guidelines will cease to apply. In accordance with procedures, this decision will be transmitted to the Executive Yuan (the executive branch of the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan)) for their notice. I want to thank all chiefs of related agencies and my colleagues for your dedication and efforts during the past few weeks. What we have done today is not only for preserving Taiwan's freedom, democracy, human rights and the peaceful status quo.

7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Scott McClellan, White House spokesman:
Our policy is clear and consistent when it comes to cross-Strait relations. Our One China policy remains based on the three communiques: the Taiwan Relations Act, and our belief that there should be no unilateral change in the status quo by either side. We welcome President Chen's reaffirmation of his administration's commitment to cross-Strait peace and stability and Taiwan's commitment to the pledges that President Chen made in his inaugural address to not unilaterally alter the status quo on the Taiwan Strait. The United States continues to also stress the need for Beijing to open a meaningful dialogue with the duly elected leadership in Taiwan that leads to a peaceful resolution of their differences.

STORYLINE
Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian said on Monday the island was terminating the governmental committee responsible for unifying with mainland China.
After a one-hour meeting with the National Security Council, Chen announced he was ending the National Unification Council and doing away with its guidelines, which commit Taiwan to eventual unification with the mainland.
Chen's announcement is certain to anger Beijing, which remains committed to bringing the self-governing island back into its fold 57 years after they separated amid civil war.
The announcement caused consternation in Washington, Taiwan's major ally.
The United States fears being drawn into a confrontation on the Taiwan issue.
According to Taiwanese media reports, Washington dispatched an envoy earlier this month to try to convince Chen to abandon his plans to change the committee's status.
Later, White House press secretary Scott McClellan responded today to the Taiwanese Government's elimination National Unification Council.
The council's purpose was the unification of Taiwan with mainland China, but it had been effectively dormant for sixteen years.
The move is expected to have little impact on any formal independence for the island, but is instead seen as another pro-independence statement by the Taiwanese government.
