Perth is a city in central Scotland, on the banks of the River Tay. It is the administrative centre of Perth and Kinross council area and the historic county town of Perthshire. It has a population of about 47,180.
Perth has been known as The Fair City since the publication of the story Fair Maid of Perth by Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott in 1828. During the later medieval period the city was also called St John's Toun or Saint Johnstoun by its inhabitants in reference to the main church dedicated to St John the Baptist. This name is preserved by the city's football teams, St Johnstone F.C.
There has been a settlement at Perth since prehistoric times, on a natural mound raised slightly above the flood plain of the Tay, where the river could be crossed at low tide. The area surrounding the modern city is known to have been occupied since Mesolithic hunter-gatherers arrived more than 8,000 years ago. Nearby Neolithic standing stones and circles also exist, dating from about 4000 BC, following the introduction of farming in the area.
The presence of Scone Abbey, home of the Stone of Scone (also known as the Stone of Destiny) where the King of Scots was crowned, enhanced the early importance of the city. Perth became known as a 'capital' of Scotland, due to the frequent residence of the royal court. Royal Burgh status was soon given to the city by King William the Lion in the early 12th century. The city became one of the richest burghs in the country, doing trade with France, the Low Countries and Baltic Countries for goods such as Spanish silk and French wine. The Scottish Reformation also played a big role in the city with the sacking of the Houses of the Greyfriars and Blackfriars, after a sermon given by John Knox in St John's Kirk in 1559.
The Act of Settlement later brought about Jacobite uprisings. The city was occupied by Jacobite supporters on three occasions (1689, 1715 and 1745). The founding of Perth Academy in 1760 helped to bring major industries, such as linen, leather, bleach and whisky, to the city. Given its location, Perth was perfectly placed to become a key transport centre with the coming of the railways, and its first station was built in 1848.
Today, Perth serves as a retail centre for the surrounding area. Following the decline of the whisky industry locally, the city's economy has now diversified to include insurance and banking. Due to its location, the city is often referred to as the Gateway to the Highlands.
PERTH, SCOTLAND | A Day Trip from Edinburgh!
While Australia’s Perth is more commonly thought of when someone says they’re visiting Perth, Scotland’s Perth is actually what Australia’s Perth is named after. Perth sits on the banks of the River Tay, just over 1 hour north of Edinburgh. Often called the Gateway to the Highlands, it is Scotland’s 7th city.

UK: Thousands march in Perth in support of Scottish independence
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
Thousands of protesters descended on Perth on Saturday, in support of Scottish independence.
Protesters were carrying the Royal Banner of Scotland and Scottish flags, and were holding signs reading It's time for independence and Our voice counts, just not in Westminster.
One of the pro-independence supporters, Margaret Welsh, said well, we like to sort out our own affairs and we think we'd make a better fist of it than they are in London.
Tom Pate, another protester, shared his frustration: we never get the governments we want when we vote in Scotland. We always get the governments that England wants and of course England is voting for extreme right-wing governments just now and you know we just have to get away from all that.
The rally, organised by the campaign group All Under One Banner (AUOB), left from Seven Acres Park, before proceeding towards North Inch, through Dunkeld Road and High Street.

Scottish Adventure Begins ???? Loch Leven Castle | Perth and Kinross, Scotland [Ad]
Another Scottish road trip starts! We're in Perth and Kinross exploring Loch Leven Castle, chatting Mary Queen of Scots and eating at Loch Leven Larder. Scotland continues to... ⬇ More Below ⬇
Welcome back to Scotland — Perth and Kinross are home for the next few travel days and vlogs to come! Our first day exploring is the epic Loch Leven, taking the ferry aka wee boat over to the Loch Leven Castle. Scottish yarns really are the best and Loch Leven has plenty to share, mostly related to Mary Queen of Scots.
Loch Leven was home to Mary Queen of Scots on a few occasions, but also where she was imprisoned and famously escaped from in a brilliant way. It's simple for us to jump on the wee ferry boat over to Loch Leven Castle but in her day things were obviously a lot trickier!
Loch Leven Larder was our lunch spot, an enormous dome sitting right on the loch!
???? Our accom at the start was The Townhouse, you can see the reviews and pricing here: or check out their site here:

A former capital of Scotland, Perth was made a city again by the Queen as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012. It is a large provincial area and the main administrative and cosmopolitan centre for the beautiful and primarily rural surrounding 2,000 square miles of Perthshire.

Many of the Scottish kings were crowned on the Stone of Destiny at Scone Palace, while there are many famous historical figures who left their mark on this royal burgh.
Today, Perth is a bustling city of around 50,000 inhabitants. It offers a range of entertainment, shops, cafés and restaurants and is recognised as one of Scotland's premier culinary centres.

Dougie MacLean Singing For Scottish Independence Perth Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland video of the brilliant Dougie MacLean and crowd singing Caledonia for Scottish Independence at a flash rally in the city centre on visit to Perth, Perthshire. Dougie MacLean, OBE is a Scottish wonderful singer songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. One of Scotland's premier singer songwriters, and a man I consider to be a good friend
I don't know if you can see the changes that have come over me
In these last few days I've been afraid that I might drift away
So I've been telling old stories, singing songs, that make me think about where I come from
That's the reason why I seem so far away today
CHORUS
Let me tell you that I love you and I think about you all the time
Caledonia you're calling me and now I'm going home
But if I should become a stranger you know that it would make me more than sad
Caledonia's been everything I've ever had
I have moved and I've kept on moving, proved the points that I needed proving
Lost the friends that I needed losing, found others on the way
I have tried and I've kept on trying, stolen dreams, yes there's no denying*
I have traveled hard sometimes with conscience flying somewhere in the wind
CHORUS
Now I'm sitting here before the fire, the empty room the forest choir
The flames that couldn't get any higher they've withered now they've gone
But I'm steady thinking, my way is clear and I know what I will do tomorrow
When the hands have shaken and the kisses flow then I will disappear
CHORUS
