Scottsville Cemetery, Scottsville, Texas
The Scott family remembered their dead monumentally and the volume of artistic memorials makes one think that they may have kept a stonecutter/ sculptor on the payroll.
The church at the cemetery was erected by the family of William Scott Youree after he was killed in Mexico in 1904. The weeping angel that marks his grave has become a popular regional photographic subject. It bears a striking resemblance to a memorial for a Hill family member in Houston’s Glenwood cemetery – even down to the missing hand.
The cemetery displays a Confederate monument that is much larger than many found on courthouse lawns around the state. The Scotts involvement in the war is reflected in seven of the names inscribed on the pedestal. Many of the others were relatives.
The Rose and Scott families joined each other in marriage prior to their arrival in Texas. The Yourees, Austins and Randolphs came later. The repetition of names in the cemetery would confuse all but the most knowledgeable genealogist or family member.
The Scottsville Cemetery is one of the most picturesque in Texas and is worthy of a trip – even if it takes you out of your way. The histories of the families demonstrates the closeness and inter-dependence that existed between pioneer families in the early development of East Texas.

Scottsville Cemetary | Scottsville, Texas
This cemetery dates from before Texas was a state. The haunting is actually on the grounds bordering the west of the cemetery and church. There is a covered spring house at the foot of a hill just outside the fenced off area leading to the cemetery parking lot. Stairs lead up the hill from the spring house to the top, where a large, two story house once stood. This house burned in the 50's, but was reputed to be haunted. Old-timers told of standing outside in their youth and listening to voices and furniture being
moved in the empty rooms inside. Youths of today say that if you stand
at the top of the stairs, you can hear a woman weeping several hundred
feet away, down at the spring house.

Rose Hill Cemetery in Texarkana Texas, memorial for Corporal Otis Henry and Texarkana history.
Rose Hill Cemetery in Texarkana Texas
We went to explore Rose Hill Cemetery. It is a historic cemetery with a lot of history and art within its gates. It is a big area and though we didn't put it all in this video we did get a big part of it.
Rose Hill Cemetery was established in 1874 and is located at Phenie Avenue & Lelia Street in Texarkana, Texas.
The cemetery and memorial lawn is the final resting place for several of Texarkana’s pioneers, forebears and veterans dating back to the Civil War. These include the graves of Otis Henry, a War World I Soldier and Captain Francis Marion Henry, one of the City’s Founding Fathers and a Great-Great Grandson of American Patriot, Patrick Henry. The plots and deeds are the private property of the individual or family members. The Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for the general maintenance of the cemetery.
Cemetery gates are open daily from 7AM to 7PM.
One of the most arresting WWI statues in Texas is a four-figured marble memorial for Corporal Otis Henry. The Corporal died a mere 35 days from the signing of the armistice. The inscriptions furnish the cause of death, the location of the event, and the soldier’s unit.
From A Comprehensive Guide to Outdoor Sculpture in Texas by Carrol Morris Little: “The grief that motivated Corporal Henry’s mother, a lady of modest means, to erect such a monument to her son inspires a deep sense of appreciation for all WWI veterans and their families.”

The City of Texarkana, Texas has recently completed upgrades to the Rose Hill Cemetery, located at Lelia and Phenie Streets in downtown Texarkana. Among other improvements, a new, automatic gate has been installed. Beginning today, Monday, February 13th, cemetery hours will be from 6:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
The City inherited the cemetery from private owners, and within the last year has removed debris, cleaned up the fence line, replaced row and section markers, and is working to rehab headstones as budget allows.
The cemetery is filled with beautiful, ornate headstones, some dating back to the Depression Era.
