Moose Cave Trail in Grafton Notch State Park, Maine
This video was created by a small Maine business helping other small Maine businesses create an online presence.
This video features Moose Cave in Grafton Notch State Park, Newry, Maine. The When in Maine See This... video series features free or nearly free places to go and things to do in the great State of Maine. Only a couple hours from Portland, Maine, the Moose Cave trail is a short 1/4 loop that's great for a quick hike. There's lots to see along the trail including a large area of reindeer moss. There are no restroom facilities at Moose Cave. However, facilities can be found at Screw Auger Falls, which is just down the road a piece.
SCRIPT: Moose Cave is in Grafton Notch State Park, which is located right about here. It’s about a 2 hour ride from Portland.
If we look at the Maine Gazateer, you can see that Route 26, also known as Bear River Road, runs right through the middle of Grafton Notch State Park and here’s Moose Cave.
Moose cave was formed when water and ice got into the joint fractures in the granite ledges and broke off big blocks of rock.
The Moose Cave trail is a ¼ mile loop consisting of very well maintained packed surfaces. However, Moose Cave is not Handicap accessible as there are several sets of wooden stairs and some narrow spots through the woods and over rocks. The trail is short enough, though, that families with small children can complete the hike with no problem.
The story goes that a moose fell into the cave and couldn’t get out. One version of the story has a hunter shooting the moose before it fell into the cave while another version has the moose falling into the cave where the hunter found it. Unfortunately, for the moose, both of these versions of the story end up with the hunter eating the moose for dinner. Another, more pleasant story is that a kind-hearted, well-fed hunter heard the cries of the moose and got together a group of people together to rescue the moose that was not harmed when it fell into the cave. You can just pick whichever story you like best, or make up one of your own.
The trail to and from the cave has some really cool trees and rock formations alongside it. Here’s a little stream that runs by the trail. “Moo” Ah…that’s just Jim. He’s practicing his moose call.
This is Bunchberry. You’ll see a lot of this in Grafton Notch.
This rock stairway leads to an area covered by different species of lichen, including reindeer Moss that was a winter food source to caribou when they used to roam this area.
So, that’s it for the Moose Cave Trail in Grafton Notch State Park in Newry, Maine.
