Padova's Scrovegni Chapel is slathered with precious and exquisite frescos by Giotto, including several poignant scenes from Holy Week, Jesus' Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. Hi I’m Tiago and this video is about Giotto, an Italian painter and architect from Florence of the late Middle Ages. Giotto di Bondone was born in 1266, nearby Florence. The great Florentine painter Cimabue discovered Giotto drawing pictures of sheep and they were so lifelike that he asked him if he would be his apprentice. Giotto is generally regarded as the one who reintroduced realistic expression into Western art. Later on Cimabue went to Assisi to paint several frescoes at th Basilica of St Francis of Assisi, and it is believed that Giotto went with him. Around 1305 Giotto executed his most influential work, the painted decoration of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. This fresco depicts the Life of the Virgin and the Life of Christ and is considered a masterpiece of the Early Renaissance. Giotto's figures are not stylized like the Byzantine models of his contemporaries. They are three-dimensional and are based on close observation, their garments hang naturally and have form and weight. The biographer Giorgio Vasari claimes Giotto made the break with the Byzantine style and introduced the technique of drawing accurately from life. He also took bold steps in foreshortening and the illusion of space, this makes viewer feel as having a place in the scene. Also Giotto's depiction of the human face and emotion sets his work apart from his contemporaries. Giotto might have been responsible for the reintroduction of true fresco to Western art. This allows more durable murals. In 1328 he was called by King Robert to Naples and In 1332 was named the first court painter with a yearly pension. After Naples Giotto stayed for a while in Bologna,and in 1334 was appointed chief architect to Florence Cathedral. In his final years Giotto had become friends with Boccaccio and Sacchetti, who featured him in their stories. Giotto died in Santa Maria del Fiore in 1337. What inspires me the most about his work is the volumetric depth of his painting that still manages retain that medieval feel to it as well as the intense colours of his frescos. Everyone has heard of the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo, but have you heard of the Scrovegni Chapel and its ceiling painted by Giotto? Art historians rate it as one of the most important artworks in the history of mankind.
It is one of the most beautiful and moving sights I have ever seen.
