Shore Diving Big Island, Hawaii - Old Airport Dive Site | Kona Honu Divers
Some of the best shore diving on the big island is found in Kona Hawaii, and local Kona dive shop, Kona Honu Divers ( can give you a guide to the best shore diving big island tips & trips! Old airport dive site is great diving and it's about a 5 minute drive from the shop! It's well protected from the usual NW swell so it's a good option when sites like puako are not diveable. We took Laura Roberts of Dread Pirate Pottery along for a great shore dive. Old Airport dive site has some nice perks. Arches, blue water pelagic fish, and nice coral are just a few of the highlights. Old airport beach park is also a fantastic place to have picnic lunch after the dive with shower and restroom facilities along with shaded benches for chillaxin

Manta Ray snorkeling aboard the Kona Style catamaran in Kailua-Kona Hawaii Big Island
#mantarays #snorkeling #bigisland We took a snorkeling cruise aboard the Kona Style catamaran in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. The crew was very nice and professional. The boat was very nice. It appeared new and clean. The manta rays are attracted to the plankton, which are attracted to the lights, so all the cruises have snorkelers hang onto surfboards with handles affixed, and use pool noodles to support their feet and keep them level with the water. The manta rays were super cool! And as they feed at night, the only way to see or experience them is to book a tour like this.

2 Step Beach Snorkeling, Big Island, Hawaii
2 Step Snorkeling location in the Kona region of the Big Island, Hawaii. 2 step refers to the rock steps used to get into the ocean. On the day I went the weather was pretty good and the water was clear. It is rocky when getting in and no sand, so if you have water shoes that is better or just wear your fins early.
There were a number of tourists and divers with everyone getting in and out in the same location, which created a traffic jam.
I snorkeled in a number of locations on the island and this location is unique in that the water is very deep with coral all around.

Places to see in ( Kailua-Kona - USA )
Places to see in ( Kailua-Kona - USA )
Kailua-Kona is a town on the west coast of Hawaii Island (the Big Island). Hulihee Palace is a former royal vacation home dating from 1838. Mokuaikaua Church, from the 1800s, is Hawaii’s oldest Christian church. On Kailua Bay, reconstructed thatched houses at Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark mark King Kamehameha I’s residence. Colorful coral lies off Kamakahonu Beach. Kailua Pier has boat moorings.
Kailua Kona, often referred to as Kona by the locals, is the main western city, population 34,000 (2012), of the Big Island of Hawaii. It is nestled on the western coast of the Hualalai Volcano. In ancient times, this area was considered the premier place to live due to the excellent weather and good water. Many kings made their homes here. It was the home of King Kamehameha I, who united the Hawaiian Islands. It was also here in Kailua-Kona that Kamehameha's son, King Liholiho, broke and officially abolished the ancient kapu system. Later, missionaries built churches and residences and planted coffee, turning the tiny fishing village into a small seaport. Now Kona has become known for sport fishing, snorkeling, sunsets and coffee, which is cultivated on the slopes of Mount Hualalai. Because the mountains block the northeasterly trade winds, Kona gets very little rain and enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine a year. Kona is also home to the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament (August) and the Ironman Triathlon World Championship (October).
Traffic was pretty minor before, but in recent years has become more congested. Driving in tourist-oriented areas can be slow, but the town is generally not large enough to have serious problems. Walking is a manageable way to explore the town, but you should rent a car if you want to get to resorts, beaches and other cultural locations. Some free parking is available: When you enter Kailua via Palani Road (Hwy. 190), turn left onto Kuakini Highway, drive for about a block, and turn right into a parking lot marked with a green P sign. From there, go down some steps and walk makai (toward the ocean) on Likana Lane a half block to Ali`i Drive, and you'll be in the heart of Kailua-Kona.
Street addresses are confusing and consist of two parts. Hawaii Island is divided into nine zones, each of which are subdivided into nine sections. The first two digits of an address, before the hyphen, indicate the zone and its section. For example, Kailua-Kona is 75, Waikoloa 68, Captain Cook 81 and Hawi 55. The numbers following the hyphen are based on the distance from a predetermined starting point — usually a road intersection or a highway. The numbers run consecutively, with odd numbers on the left and even numbers on the right as you head away from the starting point. For example, addresses on Ali`i Drive increase as you head south, with even numbers on the ocean side of the Drive.
Kailua-Kona is a place for ocean and outdoor recreational activities. Surfing, fishing, diving, boating, snorkeling and swimming are all popular sports in Kailua-Kona, as are hiking, biking, caving, and four wheeling. In August, there is the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament; in October, the Ironman Triathlon World Championship.

Magic Sands Beach Park and La'aloa Beach Park (Kailua-Kona, Big Island, HI)
Having a look around La'aloa Beach Park / Magic Sands Beach Park. It's in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii!
Magic Sands Beach Park
Address: Ali'i Drive, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740
Hours: Closes 11PM
Public park with white sand beach & rocky shoreline, offering lifeguard-overseen swimming & surfing.
------
Laʻaloa Bay is a popular recreation area in Kailua-Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.
Also known as Magic Sands or White Sands Beach, the official name is Laʻaloa Beach County Park. During calm weather, it is one of the only fine white sandy beaches in the Kailua-Kona area.
It is also sometimes called Disappearing Sands, since the sand is washed out in a storm several times a year. A strong surf break on the shore can be dangerous, but makes it a favorite for bodyboarding by experienced locals, even under moderate surf conditions.
Just north of the beach is Pahoehoe Beach County Park. Although the shoreline here is rocky lava with a few coral pebbles, there are picnic tables, restrooms, and running water. In the Hawaiian language, la'a loa means very sacred.
Several Archaeological sites are in the area.
The ruins of haukalua Heiau (an Ancient Hawaiian temple) are on a point just south of the beach, at the parking lot which was added in 2000.
The stone structure was cleared and restored and a small ceremonial platform (lele) constructed by descendants of the people who lived in this area for hundreds of years.
A small rocky cove south of the point is popular for scuba diving in calm conditions.
In 1994 after the County of Hawaii announced plans to build an 80 stall parking lot, Hawaiian Kupuna (elders) helped form a group known as the La’aloa Ohana (family). This led to agreements being made to create a Hawaiian Cultural/Educational center in 1995. In June 1995 more than 13 members of the La’aloa Ohana were arrested for attempted camping, even though according to police reports a majority of ohana had left the park, prior to its closing. The ohana continued to advocate for complete Preservation Planning and in 1997 a detailed Community based Preservation Plan was completed. The effect of this Plan was that only 25 parking stalls could be developed. While the County of Hawaii said in the 1997 Environmental Impact Statement that they would install protective measures for the Historic site prior to any construction, in 2000 they built the parking lot, and as of 2014 the Protective measures have yet to be completed.
In August 2014, based on the continued advocacy by La’aloa Ohana members, the State of Hawaii Historic Preservation Division, supported by the Department of Land and Natural Resources Conservation Investigators, forwarded to the Mayor of the County of Hawaii a scathing letter and demand they implement all of the Protective measures, or potentially they could face millions of dollars in fines. In December 2014 the County of Hawaii is currently starting to implement the Preservation Plan. Unfortunately many of the historic sites have now been severely damaged.
Based on the ongoing and tireless efforts of members of the La'aloa Ohana, on May 10, 2017 the County of Hawaii announced it would be closing the parking lot at La'aloa Beach Park on May 17, 2017, indefinitely, due to the ongoing desecration caused by the parking lot. Please visit the La'aloa Beach Park Facebook page for additional information, we look forward to your kokua.
It is located on Aliʻi Drive in the Kona District at coordinates 19°35′38″N 155°58′17″W.
About a mile to the north is Holualoa Bay, and a mile to the south is Kahaluʻu Bay.
