Paradise in Off-Season. Diving and snorkeling at the Perhentian Islands | Travel Malaysia

#15 THE PERHENTIAN ISLANDS AND DIVING SUGAR WRECK
After a very bumpy overnight bus ride to Kuala Besut we brought a boat ticket to take us over to the Perhentian Islands. It was great watching the sun come up as we took the 30 minute boat ride.
The boat stops at a number of beaches on the 2 islands but we decided Long Beach would be a good option for us as we hadn't booked any accommodation. We had a quick walk down the beach but the cheapest was 120 RM per night. We headed into the Jungle as we could see some huts on the boat ride over. Bintang View was perfect! Sea views, nice clean huts and for only 50 RM. We booked to stay for 7 nights.
We spent the first 4 days on the beach not really doing a whole lot other than enjoying one of the best beaches and seas we've come across. It was amazing. We ate most of our meals at Meeting Point restaurant. The food was good, decent prices and the guys who worked there were lovely. Other than beaching and eating we didn't really do much for the first few days other than a couple of drinks at a beach bar which was cut short by a thunderstorm. We did see a couple of monitor lizards around the hut and that was pretty cool.
Eventually we decided it was time to get moving and diving. There are loads of dives around the Perhentians but we picked Batu Layar as its a nice easy going dive, loads of fish and loads of coral. The dive centre said because I'd only just qualified they wanted to see how I got on before I did a hard one.
Batu Layar was great and it was official our first dive together. Turns out we use the same amount of air so we make good diving buddies.
We really enjoyed the first dive on the Perhentians so booked to do the Sugar Wreck dive the following day. The ship sank in 2000 at exactly 18M which is great for PADI Open Water Divers to explore.
Its a pretty long video as we had so much footage but keep watching to the end as the amount of fish we see is just crazy!
Chris has done 25 dives and said this is definitely the hardest he has ever done because the current was so strong. It felt like a real adventure and looked very haunting seeing a sunken ship.
We saw so many fish including: Porcupinefish, Barracuda, Scorpionfish, Parrotfish, Snapper, Clownfish, Triggerfish, Trevally and my favourite the Pufferfish.
A week on the Perhentians just wasn't enough so we've decided to come back again next year! For now its on to the Cameron Highlands.
P.S. If anyone is interested, the sunglasses update is on the outtake haha.

Perhentian Island, Malaysia
I took the overnight bus from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Besut and then the ferry to Longbeach, Perhentian Kecil (small island). I fit in 4 dives before I took the bus back. I took video of the fire show but I left my digital camera on the bus so this is just the dive video from my GoPro. Thank you, Turtle Bay Divers!

Being far away from the mainland, Pulau Perhentian is rich in coral and marine life which includes stingrays, nudibranchs, black corals, moray eels, turtles and colourful fishes.
The Pulau Perhentian (Perhentian Island) group of islands are the northernmost islands off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. There are two main islands -- Pulau Perhentian Besar (Perhentian Besar Island) and Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Perhentian Kecil Island) -- plus several large rocky outcrops to the northeast namely Pulau Tokong Kemudi Barat (Tokong Kemudi Barat Island), Pulau Dara Kecil (Dara Kecil Island), Pulau Tokong Kemudi (Tokong Kemudi Island), Pulau Rawa (Rawa Island), Pulau Burung (Burong Island) and Pulau Serenggeh (Serenggeh Island).
Typical of most tropical islands, the two main islands are heavily forested and ringed with white sandy beaches. Being far away from the mainland, Pulau Perhentian, which literally means 'Stopover Island', is rich in coral and marine life which includes stingrays, nudibranchs, black corals, moray eels and colourful fishes. Turtles come up to lay eggs between April and September.
The main village is situated on the southeast coast of Pulau Perhentian Kecil and the locals are a friendly and hospitable lot. Accommodation is mainly aimed at budget travellers and is available on both the main islands as well as some of the smaller islands. New resorts with better facilities are currently being constructed.
Perhentian is one of the best diving spots in Malaysia, and is also excellent for snorkelling and jungle trekking. Its laid-back atmosphere makes it the perfect getaway.
Getting there:
The departure point for all ferry rides to the islands is Kuala Besut, a tiny fishing village about 1 - 2 hour's drive from Kuala Terengganu or 30 minutes from Kota Bharu in Kelantan. If you're from Kuala Lumpur, it's best that you take a flight to Kota Bharu and take a bus or charter a taxi to Kuala Besut. Alternatively, you may take a bus from Kuala Lumpur (the journey takes about 9 hours) to Kuala Besut and ask the driver to drop you at the jetty.
There are a few companies providing ferry services to the islands. You may choose to take the fast boat (30 minutes) or the slow boat (45 minutes - 1 hour), and let the boatman know which island you intend to stop at. Generally, the fast boat makes three journeys to/from Kuala Besut per day and the slow boat, two.

PERHENTIAN ISLANDS IN MALAYSIA! My First Impressions, Finding Accommodation & the Best Beach | Vlog!
There are 2 Perhentian Islands, I planned to visit the small one however there is very limited accommodation available online so this is how I spent my first day. I arrived in the Port town of Kuala Besut at 18:30 which was too late to get a boat from Kuala Besut to the Perhentian Islands as the last boat leaves at 17:30 so I got a room in a hotel in town and left at 9:00am the next morning.
The boats run from Kuala Besut to both the big and small Perhentian Island, a return ticket is 70RM plus a 30RM conservation fee.
I had an accommodation recommendation on Long Beach so got off the boat there. After looking around on Long Beach I decided I didn’t really like it so walked to Coral Beach. I really liked Coral Beach and found accommodation to suit by budget for 50RM at Butterfly Chalet in a basic room but with an amazing view!
I spent the rest of the day chilling on Coral Beach and although I had doubted whether I should have visited the Perhentian Islands and instead just gone to Kuala Lumpur from Georgetown I’m glad I did go!
Most of the accommodation is not online on the small Perhentian Island however there are lots of chalets, huts and small hotels on different beaches, you do have to just arrive and look rather than book online.

MERAYAU | berMIMPI di Long Beach Pulau Perhentian, Terengganu 2019
#longbeach #PulauPerhentianKecil #terengganu
Percutian 3D2N di MIMPI Pulau Perhentian terasa singkat sangat. Sampaikan anak-anak abang pun takmau balik.
Kami memilih Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Long Beach).

The Perhentian Islands (Pulau Perhentian in Malay) lay approximately 10 nautical miles (19 km) offshore the coast of northeastern Malaysia in the state of Terengganu, approximately 40 miles (64 km) south of the Thai border.
South Beach, Perhentian BesarThe two main islands are Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian) and Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian). The small, uninhabited islands of Susu Dara (Virgin Milk), Serenggeh and Rawa lie off Kecil. The Perhentians belong to Pulau Redang National Marine Park, which means that fishing, collecting coral and littering are strictly prohibited. Like Besut, people here generally speak Kelantanese Malay.
Both the islands have palm-fringed white coral sand beaches (that can be tough on the feet) and turquoise blue sea. One can have a number of activities on its beaches and forests. Scuba-diving, snorkeling, and swimming are the most popular tourist activities here. On most beaches, the water is shallow with lots of rays, cuttlefish and parrotfish. For diving, there are dozens of divesites around both main islands, as well as several off-shore sites. Apart from these, you could also enjoy activities like camping, canoeing, fishing, jungle trekking, and banana boat riding. As for accommodation, most of it can be found around both islands. Hotels are usually aimed at budget travelers.
Summer 2007, 2 wind turbines have been installed, nevertheless the island's electrical power is only available from 7.00pm to 7.00am. For some of the shop owner here e.g internet cafe have installed their own huge diesel generator set/room. The internet cafe rental fee per hour is around RM10.00 to RM 15.00. A third turbine is being built. They mentioned that electricity is 24-hour during high season but when I was there and most of the hotels are full, the electricity is not 24 hours, it is still 7pm-7am ??. Fresh water is provided by springs. In this respect, the Perhentian Islands are prized by tourists as an 'escape' from the modern world. Given the fact that the Perhentians do not have an airport and still have limited high-end accommodation, they have remained relatively better protected compared to Redang and Tioman Islands.
The only access to the Islands is by boat from the fishing villages of Kuala Besut Jetty. Local tourist operators run fishing boats and speed boats several times a day from Kuala Besut to Perhentian from 7.00am to 5.00pm sometime 4.00pm. Averagely hourly basis. Nevertheless when returning from Perhentian to Kuala Besut there are only 3 trips in a day, 8.00am, 12.00pm and 4.00pm.
From the main ferry terminal at Kuala Besut there are effectively three options:
1) Speed boats - usually small fibreglass boats with two or three outboards which take 30-45 minutes, charge RM70/person for to and fro and RM40/person for one way, and depart according to demand (4-5 times a day). Some are enclosed, some have a fabric roof, some are completely open. If the sea is choppy expect a bumpy ride and in the case of the latter two types expect to get very wet. There is no safe space for electronics, you might want to wrap anything that will not survive being wet in plastic beforehand. If you don't want back problems do not sit in the front part of the boat — large swells combined with the driver going as fast as possible will throw you up in the air and smash you down hard.
2) Air-condition ferry services= 45 seaters ferry with air-condition wchich take 35-45 minutes, charge RM70/ person return and RM40/person for one way. Depart according demand. Comfortable seat and less bumpy. (no more back problem...)
3) Slow boats - usually wooden fishing boats with some seats on the deck which take 2-3 times as long as the speedboats, only available if you book in advance at around RM300/boat/way. Maximum 12 pax per boat.
All ferries take their passengers directly to their destination, wherever it may be on both the islands. Passengers are charged an extra RM2 per head to get a small boat from the ferry to the beach at Long Beach. Elsewhere, jetties are springing up and enable people to get off the ferry without the need for an additional small boat ride to shore and without getting their feet wet.
All travellers to the islands must pay a marine park conservation charge of RM5, valid for the length of their stay.
Another additional info. Maxis broadband internet coverage is good by the beach and maximum speed can be obtained at the northern section of the islands e.g 1000-1500 kbps. and for some other beaches the average speed from 200-500 kbps.
