Diving in Mafia Island, Tanzania
Mafia Island is a small island in Tanzania located in the South of Zanzibar.
It is an amazing place for divers, it is a worldwide known spot. There are so many beautiful places, corals and fish. If you are lucky enough you will be able to see dolphins, shark reef or turtles.
I went to Mafia island for 10 days after spending 2 months in Zanzibar.

BEST DIVING IN EAST AFRICA?! | Mafia Island Scuba Paradise
We spent 8 days in Mafia Island but could have easily spent a month! Every day and every dive brought something new and exciting underwater, from sea turtles to rays to seemingly endless species and colors of fish. We had perfect weather and visibility nearly every day, and thanks to Marco and Simba from Shamba Kilole, there was no end to the cool stuff we got to see all along the reefs of Mafia Island. Our time at Shamba Kilole was full of land-based highlights as well -- from local dance groups who came to help celebrate Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, to delicious fresh fruit every morning, to lazy afternoons spent in the pool, to DELICIOUS dinners topped off by the best lasagna ever (no joke). Thank you, Marco and Francesca and the entire Shamba Kilole team -- we cannot wait to return to Mafia!
Chris and Michelle Go Places is a series of vlogs documenting our travels across the world. We're on a six month sabbatical from work and intend to soak up every minute. Subscribe to follow our adventures!

Whalesharks near Mafia Island
We went in January 2018 to see Whalesharks on Mafia island in Tanzania. There is no guarantee of seeing them, so after beeing baked for 2 hours on a roofless boat which had a lot of water coming in, we almost gave up hope, but suddenly a 7 meter whaleshark appeared. In January the water is pretty merky, so you have only a few meters of visibility. This makes the whole experience into a hide and seek game, because you only see the biggest fish when it's in almost touching distance. Nevertheless should you not touch the beauty to not transmit diseases visa versa. We jumped into the water for about 7 times and were lucky to see the wild shark up close. I was worried if this behavior might stress out the whaleshark. It probably did, especially later more boats appeared and all where trying to cut off the whalesharks way, so the tourists just have to jump into the open ocean and look down to see the majestic creature. It was a really magical experience, but it's definitely not contributing to the environment, and might chase the sharks away from these areas on the long run I can imagine. Still wanted to share this unforgettable experience with you.
THIS IS MAFIA ISLAND | TANZANIA
Mafia Island is an incredible destination. Whether you want to swim with massive whale sharks, scuba dive in beautiful waters, or relax all day with the sound of the ocean, Mafia has it all.
We stayed at Big Blu Dive Center in Utende, and we saw the whale sharks in Kilindoni, which is where the airport is.
A separate travel guide video is coming soon!
The second half of the video is shot on Chole Island, which is a short boat ride away from Mafia. It's a pretty unique cultural experience that's worth the trip.
