Working on other videos of swimming with humpback whales in Neiafu Vava'u Kingdom of Tonga.
What an amazing time it is of swimming in the Pacific Ocean alongside the humpback whales as they come to Vava'u to give birth to their calf. They swim past the island of Hunga and go off toward Fiji and other South Pacific Ocean islands along with the orca, humpback, beluga and dolphin.
We could not only swim with the whales but we were also just able to sit and whale watch from the boat. My friend Jimmy was not able to get in the water so he was fine simply whale watching from above the water without snorkeling with the whales. I shot lots of amazing video too! Whales coming up for air and splashing on their side, and going below the surface with fins up and whale tails above the water. We must have seen about 30-40 whales on a chartered boat we hired, it was a fast jet boat by Vaka Vave Charters. It was fantastic!
There are only a few places in the world where you can swim with giant whales of this earth! Vava'u Kingdom of Tonga is one, and down in Sri Lanka you can snorkel and swim with giant blue whale. But that's about it. I have heard that down in Tahiti you can swim with the humpbacks also, but i heard that it is really expensive... here in Tonga and Sri Lanka it is still not crowded and very cheap to swim with the whales, BUT, it might not be for long... AND it might not be legal for long too... ;) They may decide to one day ban it. Better do it before you don't ever get the chance to do it. :) Ya' know, carpe diem and all that stuff! ... ;)
In Tonga, there are people who schedule swimming with the whales as THE main thing they do when the come to the South Pacific islands! Every single day they go snorkeling and diving with the whales. It is all they do! :) I met two people on the flights to Fiji and that was what they did for 8 days. WOAAH! :)
On our tour we went with an amazing charter company called Vaka Vave Charter. You will find Diane and Izzy and the whole crew and blast to go with! REALLY you won't be disappointed!!!!! The whales will be quite intrigued by you being there and as you can see they will possibly swim to you.
BUT DO NOT SWIM AT (TOWARDS) THEM AND BY ALL MEAN DO NOT DO NOT TOUCH THEM!!!!!! THIS WILL GET YOU TAKEN AWAY FROM THEM QUICKLY!!! WHALES ARE VERY STRONG AND IF THEY HIT YOU WITH THEIR TAIL OR FIN YOU CAN GET HURT BY THEM. THEY DONT MEAN TO BUT YOU ARE IN THEIR TERRITORY. SO BACK AWAY AND WATCH OUT!!!!

Swimming with Humpback Whales Tonga 2018
Swimming with humpback whales with Bluewater Explorer off Eua Island, Tonga. This was shot with a GoPro and the sound is as it was on the day - including my ohhhh's and ahhh's as I saw them for the first time. This experience was a life changing one and I am so honoured that these beautiful whales were so trusting and wanted to interact with us. We swam with many different whales and each time was different and always on their terms. If they wanted to play, they stayed. If they didn't, they swam off. What is so amazing to me is that they are so large yet so gentle and you can see how close they got to me but I always felt safe. There was one moment that baby swims past very closely, followed by Mum and Mum turns around to face me, decides that I must be okay and then rolls onto her back - within inches of me!! You can see me trying to move backwards out of their way but I needn't have done that as they know exactly where they are and where I was. Amazing experience and one that will stay with me forever!

Swimming, snorkeling and freediving with whales and dolphins in Tonga.
Swimming with whales in the wild and open has been a long-time dream of mine. The whales usually start to show up in late July to early August and stay until mid-October. It’s hard to pick a sweet spot within that timeframe as any week has the potential to have tons of whale sightings, or not. Some days will be packed with whale swims while others might only have one or none. Humpback whales are wild animals and since the boats don’t feed or coax them into interactions, there are never any guarantees.
We definitely got lucky, though! Seven of us headed out on a speed boat off of the island of Vava’u, Tonga, and we were one of only 10-15 boats out on the water that day, and each of the six days that we spent swimming with the whales. We hung out with a mother whale with calfs, singing male whales, and witnessed a couple of heat runs, led by a female in heat and involving several male whales all vying for a chance to mate with her. Not only did we swim with several whales, but four dolphins as well! The trip finished with a beautiful swim in a crystal clear cave full of tiny, glittering fish.
I’m forever changed after this experience. CLICK HERE to read more about my experience and how you can book, prepare and get the most out of your trip:

This is some great underwater video shot with my GoPro Hero 4+ and the beautiful islands of Vava’u, Tonga. It was incredibly beautiful and you could see all the way to the bottom. There were fish of all types and I can’t even imagine how many varieties we saw. At one point I wasn't sure if the cave was swallowing me up and if that’s necessarily how it got its name.
I was suffering from a very bad respiratory infection and was struggling to breathe and to stay underwater for longer than a couple seconds. I know you could tell that from the video. My guide was nervous and he kept checking in with me asking if I was ok… i kept assuring him as i grew up swimming and was very comfortable in the ocean, I just couldn’t breathe! LOL :)

Whale Swim Adventures
During late August and early September, 2012, I joined eight other people swimming with Humpback Whales in Vavaú in the Kingdom of Tonga, one of only 3 places in the world where you can get in the water with these beautiful creatures.
This video is a compilation of videos from a number of the people on that trip.
The music, apart from my own very bad version of the theme from Gilligan's Island, is performed by local people on the island of Utungake, part of the Vavaú group of islands. I recorded these with their permission.
I hope you enjoy the sights and sounds as much as I did.
