Dominica Roseau Champagner Riff - Scuba Diving
Wahrscheinlich Dominica's bekanntester Tauchplatz. Champagne Riff ist ein weiteres Beispiel für die enorme raue vulkanische Kraft.

From the blog: Here are 4 of our favourite dive sites in Dominica:
1. Champagne Reef
This dive site is probably Dominica’s most popular and when a cruise ship (or three) docks in Roseau the water there will be crowded. But for good reason.
The still active volcano of Dominica rises up behind the rocky beach at Champagne Reef and under the water there are hundreds of vents that send streams of bubbles rising to the surface. It looks just like champagne and swimming through the bubbling water is an amazing experience.
The water there is quite warm so there are scores of species of fish - trunk fish, trumpet fish, squid, goat fish and more. Spiral coral, wave coral, coral galore. It’s a magical place and we did two separate dives at Champagne as well as two snorkeling expeditions. It’s unmissable.
2. Scott’s Head
There are two sides to Dominican oceans - calm and furious. The calm side is the Caribbean Sea where Billy’s dive shop is located and most of the dive sites are. The Atlantic side of the island is very rough and only the most intrepid and experienced divers attempt to do their thing there.
Scott’s Head is right at the bottom of the island at the tip of a long, curving bay. A tall spit of land divides the water there between Atlantic and Caribbean, and where the two waters meet there is a submerged volcano crater filled with fish, coral and caves. Quite sublime.
3. The Wall
The submerged volcano off Dominica’s Caribbean side is huge. Inside the bowl there is a mix of deep and shallow dive sites all teeming with fish. But if you go to the edge of the volcano and look over the side, you stare into an abyss. It plunges down and as you float there looking at the dark it can be quite scary. But turn around and look at the wall and you are in fish watching heaven.
There are so many species of brightly coloured fish, turtles, nurse sharks and squid that I was overwhelmed. We dove the wall twice and loved it both times.
4. Coral Gardens
This dive site is close to shore and quite warm when the sun hits it. There is so much coral you can lose yourself in it, almost! The biggest challenge here is buoyancy, making sure you don’t drift onto the delicate coral formations. If you can manage that then the views are spectacular - lots of red and orange beds with green tubes and blue fans. Magic.
What you need to know:
Cost: Expect to pay less diving in Dominica than you will in most other islands in the Caribbean. ALDive Dominica is great value, and the more dives you book, the cheaper it gets. We ended up paying around US$65 per dive, as we got a discount because we did the PADI course with them.
Our PADI course cost us US$500 each.
Where to go: ALDive is a five minute drive south from the capital Roseau on Loubiere Rd. It has its own jetty.
When to go: The rainy season is a bummer and hits Dominica between June and November. But December to May is perfect and when the sun shines Dominica does too. Go for it!

Dominica (Part I) - Champagne Reef Snorkel trip
Irie Safari Champagne Snorkel Adventures - We were told the days before had been very windy, and that was why the water was so cloudy. The sun came over the mountain and visibility improved a little. Our guide was very patient and did not rush us at all. She took the time to explain the reef, and we felt we learned a lot on our trip.
Irie Safari Champagne Snorkel Adventures:
It's just a 15-minute drive south of Roseau through the picturesque village of Pointe Michel to the watersports facility at Champagne. Champagne is Dominica's premier diving and snorkeling site and rates among the top five snorkeling sites in the Caribbean. Underwater geothermal springs vent gasses in the form of thousands of warm bubbles giving you a feeling of swimming through a giant glass of Champagne. The reef here is quite spectacular with a myriad of sea life including sponges, lobster, parrot fish and a resident population of hawksbill turtles. You will be outfitted with high quality snorkeling gear and given an orientation of the facility and the adventure that awaits you on the reef. Tours of the reef are led by professional PADI-certified dive masters who will instruct you on the correct use of your gear and brief you on what you are likely to see and experience once in the water. After your tour, enjoy the comfort and convenience of showers and changing rooms, refreshments, a gift shop and our sundeck overlooking the beautiful Caribbean Sea.

Snorkeling in Dominica at Champagne Reef
Dominica was the second to the last stop on our 2014 cruise, and the reason for booking this particular cruise. The island lived up to our expectations.
Slight cloud cover on this day, but the water was super clear.
The bubbles were incredible, you could hear the tone in the water change as we got closer and closer to the bubbles. Floating in them was like being in a hot tub while being in the ocean. Very cool experience.

Dominica Champagne Reef Snorkelling
Snorkelling at the remarkable Champagne Reef in Dominica in the Caribbean. Bubbling up from the sea bed is heated air and water from the volcanic depths below - so like swimming through a glass of champagne.

Champagne Beach in Roseau, Dominica
Champagne Beach is located on the island of Dominica in Caribbean Sea south of Roseau. This beach was named Champagne Beach because of small gas bubbles continuously rise from the volcanic sea floor creating fantastic underwater scenery, which is with combination of crystal clear water and extensive marine life is perfect for snorkeling and diving. The beach itself is very rocky with black volcanic sand in spots.
Snorkel or scuba dive at Champagne Beach. Named after the gas bubbles that rise from the volcanic floor to the water's surface, the beach is a popular diving spot with rich marine life. Swim and explore the crystal clear waters of Champagne Reef, dive among the bubbles, and see many colorful species such as lobsters, seaturtles, seahorses, octopuses, and giant crabs. Take a walk on the black sand shore, but remember to bring suitable footwear to protect from the rocky volcanic beach. Using our world travel planner, Roseau attractions like Champagne Beach can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.
Nestled along the coastline in Roseau, Dominica, Champagne Beach has much more to offer than the pristine white sand beach that first meets the eye. Beach dwellers will be spellbound as soon as they dip their toes into the warm turquoise waters.
The sea floor covers a series of volcanic vents, which release drops of liquid crystal into the water. The effect for swimmers? Like floating in a giant flute glass of Champagne!
Great for snorkeling right off the shoreline, Champagne Reef will also wow visitors with its vibrant coral and plentiful sea life.

Dominica Snorkeling with Sherman
Snorkeling at Champagne Reef in Dominica with Sherman on February 5, 2013. This was a shore excursion from the Celebrity Summit Southern Caribbean Cruise. The shore excursion was the Champagne Snorkeling Adventure (RO39). I would highly recommend this snorkeling trip. One of the best I have been on in the Caribbean. Beautiful water and great reefs at both locations. Plenty of rum punch.

Dominica Trip - Royal Caribbean Cruise
Much of volcanic Dominica is blanketed by untamed rainforest that's a verdant backdrop to experiences such as an intense trek to a bubbling lake, soothing your muscles in hot sulfur springs, getting pummeled by a waterfall, snorkeling in a glass of ‘champagne’, swimming up a narrow gorge – the list goes on.
Dominica has been spared mass tourism, in large part because there are very few sandy beaches, no flashy resorts and no direct international flights. Whether you’re into trekking high into the mountaintops or exploring the watery world below, Dominica is the place to go for those who prefer hiking boots over high heels and are content with a nightlife where the only music is the murmur of the jungle. Dominica has surprisingly long drives for such a small island, so it’s better to pick a spot or two and explore instead of bouncing around. If you can do it in the mountains (hiking, bird-watching, searching for hidden pools and waterfalls) or the water (diving, snorkeling, kayaking), you can do it in Dominica. Don't miss the ancient forests of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, home to the otherworldly Boiling Lake and the spectacular Trafalgar Falls. There are a few sandy beaches, but most require a little gumption to find and there are usually only a few lodging choices nearby, at most.
