Scuba Diving in Nanaimo | VANLIFE VLOG
While living the van life on Vancouver Island last month, I took a break from the van for a day and decided to SCUBA dive down to explore the shipwreck of an old military destroyer ship called the HMCS Saskatchewan. It was sunk in 120 feet of water just off shore of Nanaimo, British Columbia.
I chartered a boat to get us to the dive site and a local diver guided my friend Bria and I down to the wreck. We spent an hour exploring what remains of the ship. We ventured inside the engine room and through a couple tight corridors getting a better idea of the size and layout of the vessel.
The HMCS Saskatchewan (DDE 262) was a Mackenzie-class destroyer that served in the Royal Canadian Navy. As we were exploring, a baby octopus came to say hi. As it got close, it inked as a defence mechanism and we let it carry on on its way. Not a minute later, we found a huge Great Pacific Octopus in it’s den. Our guide pointed his light at it and the octopus was attracted to it’s heat and decided it wanted our light. It reached out four of its tentacles and started a tug-of-war with our guide. This lasted a good 15 second. The octopus almost stole our light! It was very cool to see something like this so up close and personal! I’m glad I had my GoPro rolling!
After the dive I continued exploring the island for a few more weeks in my 1989 GMC Vanguard Vandura camper van. I’m now in Vancouver and as the sun has finally come out, my leaks in the van have had a break. Taking advantage of this sunny week, I got my hammock out, drove to Mount Seymour and set it up over a beautiful stream and waterfall. What a great spot to hike and do some self healing!

How to Dive Ten Mile Point in Victoria, BC [SCREENCAST]
This video tutorial describes the basic features of Ten Mile Point, what you can see while diving there, and how to get to 10 Mile Point. This site is recommended for advanced certified divers with drift experience and above. It is always a good idea to dive with other experienced divers or a dive master when trying a site for the first time. If the current starts to pick up while you are underwater don't be afraid to ascend early and end your dive.

When you first learn to dive your instructor teaches you how to dive and how the equipment works but there are other guys and girls there at the dive site helping you out so you do things right, but who are these noble divers helping you out? These are Dive Masters. Dive Masters are the first tier of professional scuba divers in the PADI training regime and they act as skilled assistants to Instructors so you’ll often have one Instructor and a few Dive Masters on your course keeping you safe and teaching you how to dive because your Instructor can’t be everywhere at once.
Dive Masters have a rough life in the professional diving community and we do make fun of them but that’s because we were all Dive Masters at one point in our diving career, and much like the military or prep school there’s always a culture of bullying those beneath you. There are two main types of Dive Master out there; the leaders and the teachers. Leaders have just toured guides that lead groups of qualified divers around dive sites and getting them back to the boat safely and teachers are what Dive Masters are really made for, to act as teaching assistants as a sort of secondary Trainee Instructor.
But as with all diver qualifications Dive Master has it’s pros and cons so let's look at Why Becoming A Dive Master Sucks... (and also why it rules)

Scuba Dive at Cedar Hill Park near Wiarton Ont, Canada - Extended Cut
This is a HD longer version of Cedar Hill Shore Scuba Dive video with extra footage taken on 15-Jul-2012
Tested my Canon 960 IS camera with Canon underwater housing. It has low light capabilities and does a good job of image stabilization with good focus. All the camera controls are easily accessible from the housing even with heavy neoprene dive gloves . Renee and I had a great time along with several other dive couples. Weather was sunny and warm with light winds. Colpoys bay thermocline was approx 35 ft depth (warm meets cold). Visibility was approx 25-35 ft but the camera did a good job. We got down below 60 ft but Renee has gotten used to Caribbean diving so we spent more time around thermocline depth. Next dive location will probably be Tobermory.
Thanks to Kevin MacLeod for his Creative Commons music.
Cedar Hill has been a popular local scuba diving spot for quite a few years due to the small, out of the way park facilities and the fact that the bottom gradually slopes to approx 150 ft or so. The site is used quite often for diver certification for open water and advanced open water. Since Advanced open water requires underwater navigation as well as search and retrive, I suspect someone started putting more interesting objects to mark out a course. Just a theory. I then suspect it became a competition of one upmanship to see who could be the most creative. At any rate objects are scattered over quite a large area and at different depths so it can take some time to find everything since the visibility is 25-35 ft normally and less if someone stirs up the bottom. Video editing makes it seem closer. Due to winter ice, the objects are positioned below 30 ft depth and therefore are quite a distance from shore due to the gradual slope. This was a 45 minute dive and we did not find everything. It is not junky as some may think. Divers are very environmentally aware and our dive club volunteers each year to help clean up local harbours and waterways.
Renee and I are having fun since the weather is finally getting nicer here in Canada. We do however look forward to returning to our home at Victoria Palms in Donna Texas this fall. Hope it is not too hot this summer in the RGV,
Hope you enjoyed the video. I am enjoying my new video editor and underwater case for my camera.
