Saba, a Caribbean Paradise

This is an edit I put together of my favorite shots from our week on the little volcanic Caribbean island of Saba. Big thanks to Sea Saba for an amazing week of scuba diving. Underwater shots were taken with GoPro Hero 4 silver in 2.7K 60fps. Aerial shots were done with DJI Mavic Pro. Panasonic GH5 1080p 180fps for slow motion shots.

Saba Snorkeling and Hiking

Check out our sail to Saba and the short time we were able to spend on the island known as The Unspoiled Queen. Enduring crazy wind sheers and a struggle to find the proper mooring, we had a great time and met some wonderful people!

SABA Snorkeling BONUS!

Bonus Saba snorkeling. We got 2 perfect days to snorkel the amazing reefs and rocks off Saba. I found a sea turtle and a blow fish! Our Beneteau was moored right around the corner. A few hrs of snorkeling into 15 minutes.

Snorkeling Down Well's Bay, Saba Island

Definitely one of the best snorkeling locations on Saba Island. This place is full of sea turtles! :)

Diving Saba

The Unspoiled Queen of the Caribbean still reigns.

Life is simple and relaxing on this charming 5 square mile island. There is no duty-free shopping, no bustling traffic, no mangroves...not even a beach. However, in what it lacks, Saba definitely makes up for in diving.

Babyschildpadden op weg naar de Caribische Zee

Deze baby Karetschildpadden werden door Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) gered. Ze zaten vast in hun nest op Klein Bonaire en zonder de hulp van STCB zouden ze zijn overleden zonder ooit het nest te hebben verlaten. Nu vinden ze hun weg naar zee.

Scuba Diving - Hot Springs - Saba

The conservation efforts have helped protect the environment for some 150 different types of species that inhabit the marine park's waters. During our four dives (Torrens Point x2, Hot Springs (this video), and Tent Reef) we encountered a range of marine life, most notably the porcupine fish, sea slug, sea turtles, stingrays, seahorse (I know how cool!!) and lots and lots of beautiful fish.

Saba is known as the “Unspoiled Queen of the Caribbean” and it truly lived up to it's name. We could not get enough of the beauty the island has to offer. It's a 5 square mile island that is the tip of a volcano, yet was so full of life.

Diving, hiking and made several friends along the way. What an amazing community of people. We can't wait to come back.

SABA – die kleinste Insel der Niederländischen Antillen. Mit nur 13 Quadratkilometern gehört sie zu den Inseln „über dem Wind“. Beim Anflug auf den kleinsten kommerziell genutzten Flughafen der Welt, nimmt die unglaubliche Landschaft sie sofort in ihren Bann. Der Mount Scenery mit 898 Metern, die tropischen Regenwälder, die üppige Vegetation und ihre Tierwelt sind einzigartig in der Karibik.

Saba Girls Run revives the Girl Power Club
Since October the Saba Girl Power Club received a fresh infusion of volunteer sup-port as it joined efforts with an organically created sports and balanced lifestyle student initiative called ―Saba Girls Run.‖ This ini-tiative between SUSOM's medical students' women association and the Saba Comprehensive School's young women took on a sur-prising level of personal commitment in recent months reviving the efforts of the AIDS Support Group Saba (ASGS) Foundation in implementing esteem build-ing, sexual education and related prevention pro-grams. Saba Girls run, im-pressed time and again with their perseverance holding
Saturday morning workouts irrespective of holidays, pub-lic events or any other ex-cuses.
One of the medical student leaders, Kim Whiticker is a professional personal trainer and a competitive athlete with knowledge of what it takes to train both body and mind for rigorous exercise and self-discipline in order to achieve one's goals. The youth initiative is a personal pledge of the participants that distinguishes it from previous such attempts through the sustained en-thusiasm and commitment of its members.
The medical students in-volved in this group amazed everyone with moving to ac-tion without seeking any financial support for their
endeavors. After talking with Saban girls they decided to raise their own money to buy run-ning shoes for all participating Saban girls. The medical students sought to raise the needed funds on their own simply because they promised the girls and did not want to disappoint them. When their funds were found insuffi-cient, various medi-cal student organiza-tions pitched in and got the shoes to the island. This was nei-ther a faculty initia-tive nor a foundation agenda and remains a laudable youth ini-tiative.

Saba Girl Power workshop on Bullying
Under the supervision of SU-SOM faculty, Dr. Dumitrescu, the medical students and Sa-ban girls taking part in the Saba Girls Run organized a workshop on Bullying on No-vember 25th. Meeting on the SUSOM campus the young women had a morning of ac-tivities, scenarios and student presentations on the topic. They talked about what is ―harassment,‖ who is ―a bully,‖ types of bullying and what it does to a person. The group also brainstormed on how to deal with bullies and what to do in certain situations as a victim or as bystander.
The buddy system of the Saba Girl Power social media club and the Saba Girls Run Facebook pages are to be-come a part of the support mechanisms that the young women intend to manage for themselves with set rights and responsibilities in be-longing to these groups. The ASGS Foundation while pro-viding lunch for the partici-pants, logistic and resource support is increasingly rely-ing on this community volun-teering initiative in imple-menting prevention programs based on the expressed ac-tual needs of the youth it seeks to serve.

Saba Girls Run activities build-up momentum

The Saba Girls Run group initiated by the Women Medical Student Association (WMSA) of Saba University School of Medicine (SUSOM) and the girls of Saba Comprehensive School (SCS) succeeded not just to maintain the weekly workouts but to diversify its mentorship activities.
The group also initiated a Capture the Flag game which ended up so popular that it was joined by other male youth and university students. The interest is to serve in the creation of a parallel boys' basketball or run group for Saban youth and male medical students.
After this, the group organized a Scavenger hunt game learning how to manage to reach goals without too much money, armed only with creativity and determination.
The lesson triggered a surprising outcome, it determined the girls to organize a fundraising to cover the costs for a day trip to a neighboring island. The barbeque and carwash fundraiser they decided on was initially planned for late February but had to be postponed as the group could not secure the necessary permit for holding the fundraising public event. Instead of being discouraged the group organized a day of fun in the sun, walking from the SUSOM campus to the Fort Bay Harbor and enjoying swimming, and snorkeling activities as well as the specially requested s'mores.

Wells Bay, Saba

Wells Bay is the only beach front area on Saba. Much of the time it is underwater. In older times this area was used for ship building.
