Nineteen American Masterworks
The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in America were a “coming-of-age” period in American art. Art historian William Kloss explores this special installation of masterworks by Gilded Age, impressionist, and Ashcan school painters.
Corning Fountain - Bushnell Park - Hartford, CT
Erected in 1899 and presented by John Corning (Corning Glass Works of New York) as a tribute to his father, a Hartford businessman who operated a grist mill on the site. Designed by James Massey Rhind of New York, the sculpture uses a Native American theme, rather than a classical one, which would have been more typical of the period. The monument is made of marble and stone, 30 feet tall, with the figure of a stag (or Hart for Hartford) surrounded by Saukiog Indians, the city's first inhabitants.

RARE AND IMPORTANT PAINTING
Suppose you were in the market for a charming French Impressionist painting of a Paris street scene circa 1890's....
Sure, you can buy a decent (and very small) Monet starting around $800K.
But....if you were really smart, you would consider this EXQUISITE JEWEL of a painting by one of Monet's neighbors in Giverny circa 1895 - Milton Herbert Bancroft....
Bancroft was one of the early American Impressionists in Paris during this time, influenced by the circle of John Singer Sargent, James Whistler, and peers such as Guy Rose.
This painting depicts Val De Grace cathedral on a foggy morning in the mid 1890's. This painting really makes you FEEL the atmosphere...transporting us to a very different time and place...
Occasionally you may find a painting by Bancroft come up at auction. However, there are few true comparables to this example. This painting would probably fetch $8,000-10,000 at Christie's or Sotheby's these days (plus 25% buyers premium).
Born in 1867 in Newton, Massachusetts, Milton Bancroft became an Impressionist painter of portraits, landscapes, figures, and murals. He was much influenced by his stay at Giverny, France where he adopted the effects of sun dappled light on figures and landscape that were espoused by Richard Miller, Louis Ritman, Frederick Frieseke, and George Biddle.
He attended Massachusetts Normal Academy School in Boston, and from 1883 to 1886, studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. From 1886 to 1892, he taught at Swathmore College and served briefly as Superintendent at the Pennsylvania Academy.
In 1894, he left for Europe and spent five years of intense training in Paris, studying with Louis Giradot and Gustave Courtois at the Colarossi. Returning to the United States, he earned much respect for his talents and was commissioned to do a mural, Court of the Seasons, for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco.

Living History Farm Tour - Episode 5
Episode 5: August 4, 2018
In Week 5, we started out in New Jersey, where we took a country stroll around Fosterfield Living Historical Farms, where we got to crack corn like Jimmy, and feed chickens and do other farmly stuff-- in addition to touring an old mansion where the rich Foster family once lived, and which was built by a grandson of Paul Revere. Or more likely, he had guys build it for him.
Then we continued up the coast to Connecticut, where we worked in a couple of more escape rooms. We also strolled around the grounds with some really impressive sculpture at Studio 80, a sculpture park in Old Lyme.
Next on our trajectory was Massachusetts, where we peeked into the windows of the actual schoolhouse where Mary Sawyer brought her pet lamb around 1817, thus inspiring one of the most famous nursery rhymes ever. Just down the road is anther poetically significant landmark: the Wayside Inn, which has been operating continuously since 1716. Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow spent some time there, and heard the other guests tell interesting tales. This inspired him to write up these tales in verse form and publish them as Tales of a Wayside Inn. The most famous of the stories begins “Listen my children and you shall hear/ of the midnight ride of Paul Revere”. (Hey Paul, your grandson had a cool place on the farm.) Next to the inn is a picturesque old mill that is still in operation. It's so picturesque that it's used on the label of Pepperidge Farm products.
And no visit to Massachusetts would be complete with exploring Purgatory Chasm State Park, which has the most fabulous assortment of rocks ever for climbing on, squeezing through, crawling under and even sliding down. They almost look as if they were designed by engineers for a Star Trek holodeck.
Now we're making our way to Cape Cod, and look forward to being in New England for a few weeks.
QUESTION: Have you visited a living history museum? Where was it?

Art Talk - Program #17 - A Portrait of Roger Dennis
Produced by the Griffis Art Center, June 21,1993
Hosted by Patricia M. Shippee, this program of “Art Talk” features Roger Dennis, Connecticut's Dean of American Impressionism. Enjoy a visit to his garden and studio for a glimpse of an extraordinary painter and New Englander who reminisces about Old Lyme, CT and its artistic heritage. (52:55 minutes)
Art Talk takes you on location to meet the people whose paintings, sculpture, and other works are shown throughout Connecticut. Join our hosts for behind-the-scenes visits and conversations with visual artists and art educators as they offer you a rare glimpse into their ideas, inspiration, materials and methods. What makes one artist paint watercolor landscapes, and another cast bronze figures? Why are some drawn to abstract images, while others prefer realism? How do the works of artists from other countries differ, and what do they have in common? With its pleasingly informal style, “Art Talk is where people are turning to learn what it's about.
Brandywine River Museum of Art Presents: From Homer to Hopper
From Homer to Hopper: Experiment and Ingenuity in American Art reflects the rich diversity of style and expression in American art created between 1870 and 1950.
The exhibition, assembled by the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, features fifty-four superb paintings by Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Thomas Eakins, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Jacob Lawrence, Georgia O’Keeffe, Horace Pippin, Maurice Prendergast, John Sloan, and many others who revolutionized picture-making in the United States. The exhibition traces the course of modern art in the works of these artists—from the bold, investigative realism of Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins at the end of the nineteenth century, to the reductive views and psychological insights of Edward Hopper and Morris Graves at mid-twentieth century.
The Phillips Collection, founded in 1918 by Duncan Phillips and opened in the Phillips family home in 1921, was dedicated to modernism and to America’s best artists. Phillips formed his ground-breaking collection with a strong emphasis on paintings by artists whose critical thinking and creative originality would raise American art out of obscurity. He challenged the perceived superiority of European over American art . In addition, he sought works by women, artists of color, and native and foreign-born or self-taught artists, so that the collection represented a “fusion of various sensitivities” and a “unification of differences” that would parallel the multicultural character of the nation. Phillips was the first to give living artists solo exhibitions, and his support for new artists was a critical factor in the careers of many.
This exhibition is organized by The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC, and is made possible through the generosity of William and Laura Buck with additional support from Wilmington Trust and FREEMAN’S.
