6 HEADS
Gints Gabrans “6 Heads” 2015
Light, sculpture and 3D video installation “Six Heads” is about perception that is tied to the simultaneous overlapping of various models of reality (subjective, “objective”, expanded, virtual etc.). It deals with the transformations or shifts in these models, each forming its own individual view of the world that is determined by every person’s subjective experience and perception.
The work “Six Heads” refers to the specific properties of human subjective imagination and perception. As a result of the activities of the brain’s network of neurons, they endeavour to “complete” unclear, unexpected visual objects. They interpret them as models of forms already existing in the brain or by “drawing in” the missing parts, allowing us to see recognisable images we can also put a name to. The exhibition will work on the fact that our brains constantly look everywhere for similarities with faces that are recorded in their network of neurons. Every time a similarity is found, the brain rewards us with a dose of dopamine.
On show will be polyethylene sculptures created through the use of nature’s self-organisation principles. Virtual videos of these 3D models using X-ray computer tomography also show the forms of the sculptures from the inside. The light installation uses these sculptures as forms created in partly controlled chaos to create the next forms of the same character – shadows. The rest is up to the perception of the viewer.
