A tour through Tallinn, Estonia's sculpture museum of old Communist statues
From a 16-foot bronze statue of Joseph Stalin to marble busts of Vladimir Lenin, the Maarjamäe castle serves as the city's defacto history museum of Communist statues torn down after independence.

Eco-art: Turning plastic bottles into motorcycle helmets
When people think of recycling, they rarely attach any notion of creativity to it. However, Sandra Nakitto, an artist from Uganda, is changing all that.
Nakitto, a Fine Arts graduate, can often be found searching through garbage dumps - on the look out for plastic bottles. She also collects other plastic materials, usually left over from public events.

Paul McCartney enjoys lunch with Roman Abramovich on exiled oligarch’s £1.2bn superyacht Eclipse
Beatles legend Sir Paul, 76, hopped aboard as he met Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich for lunch on the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy on Friday. PAUL McCartney enjoyed a spot of lunch on Roman Abramovich's £1billion luxury yacht yesterday while on a post-Christmas holiday with his family.. The Beatles legend was snapped hopping aboard a vessel on his way to a meal with Chelsea owner Abramovich - who is reportedly banned from entering the UK - in the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy.. Sir Paul, 76, took a drink alongside is wife Nancy Shevell, 59, and fashion designer daughter Stella, 47, on board the Eclipse Friday.. Earlier, he took to the wheel of a rental car as he drove to the lunch appointment wearing a collarless blue shirt and snazzy panama hat.. Meanwhile, Stella wore an in-vogue camel coloured jumpsuite - and Nancy was seen stepping on board with a floral dress and shades.. Sir Paul had touched down in the French-speaking island on Boxing Day in a private jet.. He chose Friday to meet on Abramovich's superyacht - as the Russian oligarch still awaits the renewal of a visa to allow him to visit the UK.. The billionaire was granted Israeli citizenship earlier this year, which would normally allow him access to Britain without hassle.. He is currently banned after a delay in renewing his investor visa amid a row over close links to Russian president Vladimir Putin - punished in the wake of the Salisbury poisoning scandal.. But senior government sources revealed to The Sun earlier this year that he still faces a separate banning order to stop him coming into the country.. Border chiefs have a range of powers they can deploy to override visa waiver schemes.. The senior source said: “Having an Israeli passport is not a backdoor at all.. “There are a whole range of powers that can be used to stop Abramovich from coming in.. “He could be deemed not conducive to the public good, it could be decided that he is coming in for different reasons than he has stated or there could be concern about previous immigration offences.. He will find out that it’s not that easy.”. But the exile has allowed 52-year-old Abramovich more time to spend on the staggering vessel.. It cost just shy of £300million when he picked up the keys in 2010 - and at the time it was the biggest private yacht in the world.. It is probably the most extravagant boy’s toy ever imagined - with upgrades and maintenance taking the cost to well over £1BILLION.. Built by renowned German shipbuilder Blohm & Voss in the Hamburg shipyards that built the Bismarck, Eclipse was launched after five years of design, development and testing.. For starters it is 533ft long – more than twice the size of the pitch at Stamford Bridge.. The fuel tanks are said to be able to hold a million litres, meaning it can travel 6,000 miles before it needs topping up.. Eclipse boasts nine decks, the top one containing two helipads and a garage. The forward helideck opens out to allow for a Eurocopter EC155

Farewell to Russia - From Moscow to Murmansk
After four years in the country, Jelle Brandt Corstius says goodbye to his Russia. He visits people and places that are illustrative of the way he has come to know Russia. Thus, he takes us to the subway in Moscow, which forms a society in itself. With his landlord, Jelle visits a Russian Orthodox mass, a promise from long ago that Jelle finally redeemed. We are following him during a visit to a shelter for poor Russians, located directly across the mayor's house, who does everything he can to get rid of them, because they spoil his view.
In the first series: From Moscow to Magadan, Jelle Brandt Corstius traveled from West to East, focusing on the endless Russian countryside and the villages. In this second series: From Moscow to Murmansk, he travels from North to South along the largest river of Russia: the Volga River. A trip along the relatively unknown cities like Murmansk, Volgograd, Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod, but also to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Through topics like women in Russia, new censorship, the environmental problem from Russian perspective and the ideological vacuum, a relatively unknown side of Russia is once again exposed.
Presented by: Jelle Brandt Corstius
Final editor: Gert-Jan Hox
Directed by: Hans Pool

Russian villager turns his house into work of art
(17 May 2017) LEADIN:
Deep in the Russian countryside, a local man has transformed his home into a work of art.
Mikhail Korshunov's work is inspired by his life in the village and by the beautiful countryside that surrounds him.
STORYLINE:
Mikhail Korshunov's house is not difficult to spot.
A sculpture of a family of cranes in their nest adorns the roof and the walls are bursting with colourful paintings.
In case you're in any doubt as to the meaning, there are signs reading Beware of the dog! and Beware of the berserk landlord!
Korshunov is a self-taught artist, who uses different styles and techniques to paint buildings and objects, giving them his own particular meaning.
Like other residents of his half-abandoned village, he relies on his land plot to feed himself.
Even his tractor is a work of art: an image of a deer is painted on its side along with its name, Tsar Vladimir.
Korshunov says the tractor is his own personal Tsar: fulfilling the traditional role of the master who comes to help the villagers and make their lives better.
People always had some sort of expectation that a master would come, that he would settle disputes. (Just as in many folk tales) An old woman waits for the master, (saying) he will help us, he will build us a new house and will punish and condemn those who should be punished, he says.
We (Russians) have always been waiting for some sort of help from a Tsar, and to be able to rely on him. What people are like, so is their Tsar. And I rely on my Tsar (the tractor). If I don't work through the soil of the vegetable garden with it, no one will help me. To me, to some extent, this is the Tsar.
Korshunov says the images he paints have particular meanings, such as the deer symbol on the tractor.
There used to be state symbols indicating which factory it belongs to, like PTP, 3 letters, that's it. There are no factories, so this farm vehicle became private property. So I painted mine with (a symbol) from nature, a deer. Let it be this way. I like it. I don't know about others.
Korshunov was born and has lived most of his life in the village of Severnaya Griva.
It's just 140 kilometres (nearly 90 miles) east of Moscow, but it's a different world.
Like many Russian villages, the population here is sparse and is dwindling.
Korshunov lived with his wife in a nearby town for some of his life, but after they divorced, he moved back to the house he was born in.
The house is full of treasures. In his garage there is an old World War Two-era Renault brought from Germany by his father after the war.
Korshunov used to take it to local parades.
He used to be a fire fighter and is now a local forest warden.
But it's his artwork that he's known for here, in particular the portraits of Russian rulers that adorn the facade of his house.
His gallery includes Pyotr Stolypin, Vladimir Putin, Joseph Stalin, Vladimir Lenin, Peter the Great, Dmitry Medvedev and Ivan the Terrible.
He says many confuse the portrait of Stolypin with Tsar Nikolay II and Emperor of Russia Alexander III.
His portraits of Russian leaders are painted in a realistic manner, but he's also made religious icons imitating the old traditional style.
Korshunov is also a poet, filling notebooks with his verse, which are scattered around the house.
We hear the echo of the ages which passed, the sound of Damascus steel and earthy moans. And the scream of the cranes from the blue skies we can hear, forever alive. We do not know much about the dead heroes who protected out Motherland, which destiny was given to them and where they died, he says, reading from one of the notebooks.
Korshunov was asked to paint a restaurant here.
But despite Korshunov's presence, the village is fading.

Art of the Unexpected, Lincoln Bike Kitchen, The Cooking Kuxhausens, Swapping Stories on The Buffalo Commons
“Art of the Unexpected”
We get a guided tour of the Flatwater Folk Art Museum in Brownville from former Sheldon Art Museum Director George Neubert. The Brownville museum is a marked departure from the fine art for which the Sheldon is known. Instead, the Flatwater represents Neubert’s lifelong obsession with folk art, featuring high-brow as well as some rather interesting low-brow works.
“Lincoln Bike Kitchen”
All it takes is a little elbow grease to get a set of wheels from the Lincoln Bike Kitchen. “The Kitchen” is a place where you can build a bike or get your own bike fixed for free… provided you volunteer as well. In this story, we meet the core team keeping the gears running at this fledgling nonprofit.
“The Cooking Kuxhausens ”
Dick and Marlene Kuxhausen of Scottsbluff are two lovebirds whose recipe for a happy marriage includes plenty of time together in the kitchen cooking foods of their common heritage. In their own words, “They’re just two happy Germans from Russia.”
“Swapping Stories on the Buffalo Commons”
After two decades of swapping stories, the Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival in McCook is stronger than ever. We visit with one of this year’s featured performers, State Poet Twyla Hansen and meet some of the local storytellers keeping the heritage of the Plains alive with tales that are at times informative, sometimes challenging but always entertaining.

Damnatio memoriae (condemnation of memory) was a punishment reserved for certain people the Romans decided to dishonour for one reason or another. Rather impressively, it involved trying to get rid of all records that the person ever existed.
