Greece woos new Macedonian government
(14 Jun 2017) Greece on Wednesday promised Macedonia's new government closer ties but insisted a decades-old name dispute should be resolved before it would support its future membership of NATO and the European Union.
Athens has blocked membership efforts, arguing that its neighbour's name implies a territorial threat to its own region of Macedonia.
But hopes of a resolution have been raised after Social Democrat Prime Minister Zoran Zaev formed a government two weeks ago, following months of political crisis.
Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias said that Greece was open to supporting all their (Macedonia's) efforts after the name issue is solved following talks with his visiting Macedonian counterpart, Nikola Dimitrov, in Athens.
Macedonia, fearing a flare up in ethnic disputes in the region, is seeking swift NATO membership.
Dimitrov described the Athens meeting as a good start.

Germany: Greece-Macedonia name resolution closer than ever - Merkel
German Chancellor Angela Merkel hailed progress in the Greece-Macedonia name dispute during a press conference with Macedonian Prime Minster Zoran Zaev in Berlin on Wednesday.
Merkel stated that 'in the last ten years a solution has never been so close' and added 'there are already many conflicts in the region and every resolved conflict is a good thing.'
Talks are underway to devise a provisional name for Macedonia in order to bypass Greek opposition to its NATO membership under its current name.
Many see the name 'Macedonia' as posing a threat to the Greek state since it implies a territorial claim over the eponymous region of northern Greece.
Meanwhile, Zaev said there was 'no alternative for Macedonia and the region but full NATO and EU membership' and he hoped in the near future it would become a reality.

Commies Tossed into the Dustbin of History
When ideologies change so do the statues on the square. And with the end of the Cold War about 25 years ago, statues from Vilnius to Varna came tumbling down. Bulgaria, so subservient to Mother Russia throughout its 45-year-long communist nightmare, had more than its share of these propaganda statues. And many of them fill the backyard of the art museum in its capital city, Sofia.
I remember visiting the tomb of Georgi Dimitrov (the father of the Bulgarian Communist Party) here in Sofia back in the day. It was like going to a mini-wannabe Lenin’s Tomb. Today, no one even thinks of him. And his statue is just another face in this stony junkyard of propaganda.
I love to visit places like this and think of politics — compromise, diversity, respect, democracy, pluralism — and the treasure we have in our freedom. Here’s a quick tour.
This is Day 46 of my 100 Days in Europe series. As I research my guidebooks and make new TV shows, I’m reporting on my experiences and lessons learned in Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Bulgaria, Romania, and beyond. Find more at blog.ricksteves.com.
Yuri Gagarin
Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (Russian: Ю́рий Алексе́евич Гага́рин; IPA: [ˈjʉrʲɪj ɐlʲɪˈksʲejɪvʲɪtɕ ɡɐˈɡarʲɪn]; 9 March 1934 – 27 March 1968) was a Russian-Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human to journey into outer space, when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961.
Gagarin became an international celebrity, and was awarded many medals and titles, including Hero of the Soviet Union, the nation's highest honour. Vostok 1 marked his only spaceflight, but he served as backup crew to the Soyuz 1 mission (which ended in a fatal crash). Gagarin later became deputy training director of the Cosmonaut Training Centre outside Moscow, which was later named after him. Gagarin died in 1968 when the MiG-15 training jet he was piloting crashed.

International Brigades
The International Brigades were military units, made up of volunteers from different countries, who travelled to Spain, in order to fight for the Second Spanish Republic, in the Spanish Civil War, between 1936 and 1939.
The number of combatant volunteers has been estimated at between 32,000–35,000, though with no more than about 20,000 active at any one time. A further 10,000 people probably participated in non-combatant roles and about 3,000–5,000 foreigners were members of CNT or POUM. They came from a claimed 53 nations to fight against the Spanish Falangist forces led by General Francisco Franco, who was assisted by German and Italian forces.

Mausoleum of Mao Zedong
The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, commonly known as the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong or the Maosoleum, is the final resting place of Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China from 1943 and the Chairman of the Communist Party of China from 1945 until his death in 1976.
Although Mao had wished to be cremated, his body was embalmed and construction of a mausoleum began shortly after his death. This highly popular attraction is located in the middle of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the capital of China. It stands on the previous site of the Gate of China, the southern gate of the Imperial City during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Macedonia PM says his nation and Greece 'tired' of name dispute
(11 Jan 2018) Macedonian Deputy Prime Minister Bujar Osmani says that both Skopje and Athens have got tired of the long-standing dispute over his country's name.
Osmani on Thursday urged the European Union to help, saying that if the issue remained unaddressed it could result in a political and security crisis that could easily spill over to the rest of Europe.
Earlier this week, Osmani visited neighbouring Greece in an effort to resolve the dispute over the tiny Balkan republic's name that has blocked its membership of NATO and closer integration with the European Union.
Osmani met with government officials in Athens as the two governments pledged to try to resolve the dispute before the summer.
Macedonia gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.
But Athens says its name implies a territorial claim over the neighbouring Greek region of Macedonia, and is seeking a so-called composite name solution.
No official source in both countries have confirmed news reports that the two sides were considering the name New Macedonia.
