Underwater Sculptures in St. George's, Grenada
The Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park is a collection of ecological underwater contemporary art located in the Caribbean sea off the west coast of Grenada, West Indies and was created by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. In May 2006 the world's first underwater sculpture park was open for public viewing. Taylor's aim was to engage local people with the underwater environment that surrounds them using his works which are derived from life casts of the local community. He installed concrete figures onto the ocean floor, mostly consisting of a range of human forms, from solitary individuals to a ring of children holding hands, facing into the oceanic currents.
Exploring the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park
At the Grenada Underwater Sculpture Park, you’ll now find around a hundred individual sculptures, comprising both solo and group installations and covering over 800 square meters of the seabed.
The best part is that it’s just a 10-minute boat ride from St. Georges and 15 minutes from Grand Anse, west of Grenada. So pack your travel and snorkeling gear, head over to Grenada island, and get ready to see these fascinating sculptures!
Vicissitudes
Vicissitudes is one of Taylor’s most notable sculptures. Located 5 meters below the surface of the water, it’s composed of life-sized figures of local children holding hands and forming a circle. With the concrete sculpture now forming corals, the natural transformation reflects how children can adapt to any environment as they grow up.
Grace Reef
Grace Reef is a dynamic installation that consists of 16 female forms that lie on the sand. Unbound and exposed at 4 meters underwater, these sculptures resemble the female form of a Grenadian lady and are meant to evolve as they get covered by sand and corals or rediscovered over time.
The Lost Correspondent
This installation, found 7 meters underwater, features a man poised over a typewriter while sitting in front of a desk covered with newspaper clippings. The articles, which date back to the 1970s, include documentation on Grenada’s involvement with Cuba. Together, the work draws attention to changes in communication and captures a pivotal moment in Grenada’s history.
TAM CC Faces
Thanks to the involvement of students from the local community college, this installation features a diverse collection of life-sized faces molded side by side into a large rock. As species of tunicates and algae gradually take over the concrete, the more these faces will exhibit diversity.
The Fall from Grace
More popularly known as the “Man on a Bike,” the sculpture showcases a life-sized man cycling along the side of a reef. You can find this installation by diving a little over 21 feet below the surface of the water, which could be an adventure on its own.
The Amerindian Petroglyphs
The Amerindian Petroglyphs is one of the newest installations in this underwater sculpture park. Fashioned by local craftsman Troy Lewis, it features 14 sculptures based on Amerindian art, culture, and spiritual worship.
The UnStill Life
One of the most popular installations in the sculpture park, The UnStill Life (situated over 25 feet below the surface) features a classic still life composition of a vase and fruit bowl on a table. Like the other sculptures found throughout the underwater museum, this piece will gradually be colonized by coral, sponges, and other marine life, adding another layer of meaning to the sculpture.
The Silent Cry
One of the newest installations, this time by local sculptor Rene Froehlich and local craftsman Jefferson Thomas (the Buju of Grenville), The Silent Cry was constructed to represent the organic root system of giant trees in the Grenadian rainforest. It is 7 feet tall and the first of a series of seven by Froehlich.
Sienna
Sienna is another sculpture that shows the human form, but with interwoven metal strands. The elegant installation is said to be of a young skin diver from a local story and its unique construction allows her to be open to the flow of water.
Christ of the Deep
This Christ sculpture was dedicated during the 50th anniversary of the Bianca B cruise ship tragedy. It’s actually a replica of the one in St. Georges, which was purchased to show gratitude to the Grenadians for helping the survivors after the ship sank in October 1961.

Grenada Jeep & River Tubing Tour Island Routes
I filmed this on August 15th, 2016 in Grenada during our honeymoon.
We booked this tour through Island Tours from our hotel (Sandals LaSource). It was such an awesome way to see the island! The jeep picked us up right from the resort and took us on a fun drive through the windy & hilly roads of Grenada. They provide a tour guide who tells you all about the island and talks about everything as your passing it.
We stopped at a sulfur spring on the way to river tubing which was pretty cool and gave us a chance to make a small hike through the jungle to get there.
The river tubing was a lot of fun! Small rapids, nothing too crazy, and areas to jump and rope swing. I hear the river flows a lot faster in Sept-Nov during their rainy season!
Feel free to comment or leave a question if your curious about anything! We also did the power your own boat & snorkel tour which was awesome! I'll be adding another video of that to my channel soon!

TRANSCRIPT:
Just spent the day in Grenada, and had a really wonderful time here!
This is known as the Spice Island, and our first stop was at this waterfall.
I purchased a necklace full of all of the different spices and things that they grow here. There was nutmeg on the necklace, cacao beans, clove and mace. They also put in some ginger and turmeric.
They also grow cinnamon on the island as well as bay leaves and so many other things.
Grenada is a very tropical island - it is in a chain of islands that were created by volcanoes.
And so as a result, instead of them being kind of small and hilly - they're very big mountains that you can see and you can drive over. But they are definitely mountains, as opposed to hills which we saw in the other islands in the Netherlands Antilles chain that we were just at a couple of days ago.
We saw some women who were carrying on their head (and we took a picture of them with Larry) they had cacao beans, and they had all kinds of different fruits and vegetables. They were very, very colorful and I've got a picture that I'll send you on that as well.
The local people here are very, very friendly and they'll do anything you want for a dollar, a dollar for this, or dollar for that: they’ll take your picture, or they'll jump off the waterfall into a big pool - because they have 35 percent unemployment here.
So they're very, very entrepreneurial in their way of trying to make some money and were a lot of fun to be around and very friendly.
After we visited the waterfall, we actually went to a nutmeg factory and it was really cool everything was done by hand, no automation whatsoever, from washing, to sorting to, you know, taking off the kernels actually that was done by little bit of a machine but basically they stuffed all these things in gunny sack bags ready for export and they're one of the major exporters in the world of nutmeg.
There are two crops or two items that they sell:
1) they sell the actual nutmeg nut, and
2) on top of the shell of the nut is something called mace and it's red and they dry it.
It's used for cooking and in cosmetics, and the whole shell and everything in it is used. In fact the outer shell is thrown out for mulch. Everything is used. Nothing is thrown away.
So in 2004, Hurricane Ivan came to this island and they wiped out over 90 percent of the nutmeg crop.
So what the authorities the British authorities did is they brought in banana plants and started planting them all over the islands and now they are exporting bananas. And because this is a volcanic island and it is very very rich soil the nutmegs grew back. They're all grown back, and then some, at this point. So they're back in business with the nutmeg as well.
There's quite a beautiful harbor here.
Unfortunately, I didn't get much of any pictures because when we came in today, it's been raining and we've had on and off rain with a lot of clouds so I wasn't able to get a good picture. But this has been a joyful place to come to and I really would highly recommend it.
We also went into the rain forest to the top of the volcano where there is a national park here called “The Grand Etang National Park”. This is about 2000 feet above sea level and the caldera, or what was the caldera, is now like a little lake, that you can see in the park.
It's very typical to what you would see when you have a rain forest - there are lots of different types of species of trees, and all kinds of ferns as well. It's very very green. There's also bamboo and mahogany trees and all kinds of trees everywhere.
There are plantations, and in the plantations they have not only the nutmeg, they have bananas, the cacao trees, orange trees and all kinds of trees all over these plantations.
So it is green everywhere you look.
The roads here are quite narrow and they only allow for two lane traffic. There's not a lot of room. I didn't see anything that was more than two lanes so getting around is quite challenging, especially if there are cars coming the other direction - so you really have got to be careful on these roads.
Tomorrow, we will be going to Kingston, St. Vincent and I will let you know what we see when we get there.
In closing, my wish for you is that you will love abundantly, protect your health, and be adventurous for life. You are beautiful. Let your light shine, Aloha!
