Conservation Project - The Forty: Saving the Forgotten Frescos of Famagusta, Cyprus
For five hundred years, an exquisite Renaissance fresco depicting the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste has remained hidden, forgotten, and neglected on the wall of a fourteenth-century church in Famagusta, Cyprus. The Forty charts the painstaking work of rescuing the fresco from obscurity and ruin, as part of a pioneering project that puts heritage above politics to begin, after decades of neglect, the work of saving Famagusta's forgotten frescos. Produced, directed, and narrated by Dan Frodsham.

The Persians first adopted Cyprus as a base for their wars
with Greece in the 6th Century BC, lasting until 333 BC
when Alexander the Great brought the Persian Empire to a
sudden end. The Ptolemies of Egypt ruled for the next 250
years – a glorious period punctuated by Rome’s invasion of
the island in 48 BC. But Roman rule only lasted a few years,
as Julius Caesar bestowed the island to his lover, Cleopatra,
the last of the Ptolemies, as a gift of love.
Between the 1st and 10th Centuries, multiple communities
emerged on the island, with Muslim and Byzantine settlers
co-existing until 965 AD, when the Byzantines took full
control of the island after defeating the Muslim Caliphate’s
Egyptian fleet.
Byzantine rule lasted until the 12th Century, when King
Richard the Lion-Heart handed the island to Guy de
Lusignan, a member of French Medieval Royalty, to finance
his expeditions. The Lusignans inhabited the island for
300 years, from the 12th Century until 1489, when the
Venetians captured the island and bestowed upon it the
impressive Girne (Kyrenia) Castle, as well as the celebrated
architecture of Gazimağusa (Famagusta) and Lefkoşa a
(Nicosia), which are all well worth a visit.

Against the clock: Saving the endangered heritage of Famagusta (Full version)
The city of Famagusta, located in North-East Cyprus, has been over many centuries at the crossroads between the West and the East, and has played a pivotal role between the Christian and Islamic Worlds. The heritage treasures of this city combine medieval Christian churches and some impressive city walls, among other treasures. Famagusta, once known as the richest city in the world, is now threatened by earthquakes, abandonment and neglect. Due to the severe state of deterioration, it was recently placed on the 2008 World Monuments Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites by the World Monument Fund.

Pilgrimage @ North Cyprus
The town of Famagusta is one of the six districts of Cyprus. Its main town is the island's most important port, Famagusta. The name of the city in Turkish is Gazimagusa, and in Greek, Ammokhostos. The name Famagusta is a Frankish corruption of the Greek name. It lies on the eastern coast in a bay between capes Greco and Eloea, and possesses the deepest harbour in Cyprus.
The vast majority of the district was occupied by the Turkish army in 1974, and is currently controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
To the north of Famagusta lie the ruins of Salamis. This city is believed to have been founded in the 11th Century BC, being abandoned in 648AD after the combined catastrophes of earthquakes and raids by Arab pirates. The population of Salamis then moved to Famagusta. —
The three brothers of St Barnabas Monastery, North Cyprus
Right up until 1974, the monastery of St Barnabas, North Cyprus, was a favourite place for Famagustans to have their babies baptised, the ceremonies conducted by three monks, all brothers. The brothers restored the belfry in 1958, and financed the monastery’s restoration and repairs themselves through selling honey and their home-painted
The city walls have bastions, gates, ramps, embrasures, arms depots, depots and stables. The old city of Famagusta is encircled by the historical walls, which are massive and on average are 60 feet high and 30 feet thick and date back to mediaeval times. The walls stand intact to this day, well preserved. —
Two of the original gates of the Famagusta Castle, (the walls) still stand: Porta del Mare (The Sea Gate), and Ravalin / Akkule Bastion (The Land Gate). Two more gates have been opened during the British period, which are the Djanboulat Gate, and the New G.
