How to Travel KOTOR MONTENEGRO (TRAVEL GUIDE)
Today’s video is our first and only day in Kotor. I’ve been road tripping around the Balkans for the last week, from Croatia to Bosnia to Kotor, Montenegro which we will be exploring today. If you’ve never heard of or been to Kotor, it’s a stunning town from every angle. Set beside a sparking fjord like bay, backed by white rock mountains this place is one of the most photogenic spots in Europe.
Things to do in Kotor:
1) Enter the medieval city from 3 gates (North, South, and Sea Gate)
2)10 different churches and cathedrals, most of them inside the city walls
3) Have lunch at the Old Winery and order the local seafood
4) Hike up the fortress (which will be in the next vlog)
5) Visit the Kotor farmer's market, located right under the city walls

Okay! we started the day off by hiking to the top of the Giovanni castle and fortress! this should only take around 2 hours depending on how many times you stop and admire the views of Kotor Bay. we advise you to bring proper footwear and hike to the top early in the morning before the heat and cruise ship tourists arrive! On the way up you can stop off at st Johns Fortress for a rest and a drink! be advised it gets very hot in summer months so be prepared!
We then explored the beautiful old town! cobbled streets and narrow ally ways in every direction, probably best to get a free map of the town so you don't get lost! we then visited the stunning cathedral of Tryphon before heading out of the heat to do a bit of snorkeling in the bay of Kotor itself, amazing warm sea and an abundance of marine wildlife.
it was time then to see the old town lit up at night! we wasn't disappointed, arguably even more of an amazing spectacle at night! we ate close to the clock tower and had full view of the various live music and entertainers, definitely a night to remember.

10 Things to do in Kotor, Montenegro Travel Guide Video Transcript: (Котор)
Good morning friends. We have made it to Montenegro. We're in Kotor (Котор) right by the water we're staying in the Old Town. We've been here a few days and it has been raining non-stop just like it was in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Like the first half of the week it just poured but now it is nice. We can't wait to explore this city so join us as we make a little travel guide.
If there’s one thing that had caught our attention upon arriving in Kotor (Cattaro), it was the fortifications that not only encircle the old town but also run all the way up into the mountain, so a hike up to Kotor Fortress was the first stop on our itinerary.
As a tip, we would say the best time to hike up to Kotor Fortress is in the morning because the path is shaded. This isn’t a huge consideration if you’re visiting in winter like we did, but definitely something to keep in mind if you visit in the summer.
The Cathedral of St Tryphon was built in honor of the patron saint and protector of the city, on the very same spot where an older church had already stood long ago. We paid our admission and went in to visit the cathedral’s very own museum.
After walking along part of the city walls, we stopped by the Sea Gate, which is the third entrance into the Old Town. As soon as you walk through here you’re met with a clock tower and a big square that’s encircled by restaurants and lots of little lanes that break away - basically it’s a great place to wander.
And now we want to show you one more restaurant that we enjoyed in Kotor (Cattaro). This one was called Cesarica and they specialized in seafood.
Lastly, if you want to enjoy a little evening stroll, the Port of Kotor is a beautiful place. Not only can you enjoy the city all lit up at night, but if you happen to be there on a day when the cruise ship pulls into town, it’s worth sticking around to watch it manoeuvre its way.
And that concludes our visit to Kotor (Котор). We hope you guys enjoyed following along and we’ll see you in the next video where we visit the neighbouring coastal town of Budva.

Kotor, Montenegro. Kotor old town and of the Bay of Kotor
Kotor is a coastal town in Montenegro. The old Mediterranean port of Kotor is surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period. The port and its surrounding area form an impressive and picturesque Mediterranean landscape. While there is no accurate information regarding the founding of Kotor, archaeologists believe that it rose on the foundations of the ancient city of Acruvium. Legends say that Alkima, a fairy, advised the Serbian king Stefan Dusan, not to build his town in the hills “where boats don’t have a harbor and where horses run about”, but to instead build near the sea. The rich history of Kotor, is parallel to the rich culture of the town with which many conquerors ruled: the Illyrians, the Venetians, the Austrians, the French.

Kotor’s Castle Of San Giovanni - City walls to St John’s Fortress - Sveti Ivan's
_______________________________________________________
The fortifications of Kotor are an integrated historical fortification system that protected the medieval town of Kotor (then called Cattaro la veneziana) containing ramparts, towers, citadels, gates, bastions, forts, cisterns, a castle, and ancillary buildings and structures. They incorporate military architecture mainly of Venice, but also a few of Illyria, Byzantium, and Austria. Together with the old town and its natural surroundings the fortifications were inscribed in the list of World Heritage Sites in 1979 labelled Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor and represent the only such site of cultural significance in Montenegro.
The fortified city of Kotor was also included in UNESCO's World Heritage Site list as part of Venetian Works of Defence between 15th and 17th centuries: Stato da Terra – western Stato da Mar in 2017.
History
_______
The top of the mountain of St.John was already fortified during Illyrian times. In the 6th century the emperor Justinian I reconstructed the fortress. With the retreat of the Byzantines, eventually and in spite of numerous incursions some independence was attained, however this had no lasting effects upon the fortifications. This changed when in 1420 the then independent Republic of Cattaro (one of the neolatin Dalmatian city-states) succumbed to Venetian rule.
As part of Albania Veneta the fortifications received their current structure. During this time there were two successful Ottoman sieges followed by occupations, 1538 – 1571 and 1657 – 1699. In 1797 the fortifications passed to the Habsburg Monarchy with the Treaty of Campo Formio. In 1805, Kotor (then named Cattaro) was assigned to the French Empire's client state, the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy by the Treaty of Pressburg, but initially occupied by Russian troops under Dmitry Senyavin until they left after the Treaty of Tilsit in 1807. Three years later it was incorporated into the French Empire's Illyrian Provinces. The fortifications of the city were attacked by the British naval Captain William Hoste with his ship HMS Bacchante (38 guns). In an unmilitary manner he hauled his ships' cannon to positions above the fort using block and tackle and started the shelling. After a ten-day siege, the French garrison had no alternative and surrendered on January 5, 1814.
With the Congress of Vienna Kotor was returned to the Austrian Empire. After their defeat in World War I the Austrians left and the fortress was no longer manned. During World War II Kotor was occupied by the Axis forces and was part of Italy's Governorate of Dalmatia. German troops occupied the city in September 1943: it was liberated on November 21, 1944, a date commemorated over the Sea Gate.
Severe earthquakes that damaged the fortifications occurred in 1563, 1667, and most recently, on April 15, 1979.
Description
___________
The castle St. John (San Giovanni) and the western hillside wall.
The medieval part of the town of Kotor is located on a triangular piece of land that is bordered by the most inner extension of the Bay of Kotor at its south-western side, the river Skurda toward the North, and the mountain of St. John (San Giovanni) towards the East. City walls protect the city on its northern and south-western side, towards the waters. The walls are fortified by bastions, most prominent being the Kampana tower and citadel (13th to 14th century) near the point where the river enters the bay. Close to it is the Sea Gate (also Main Gate) from 1555 allowing access from the bay, the two other gates to the city are the River Gate (also North Gate) from 1540 with the nearby Bembo Bastion from 1540 and the Gurdic Gate (also South Gate), the latter modified many times and fortified by the Gurdic Bastion from 1470. The Bembo Bastion has been converted into an open theatre. Two additional gates were present, one walled up south of the Sea Gate, the other, Spiljarskia Gate, within the ramparts of the hillside towards the old road to Cetinje.

Strolling The Streets of Adorable Kotor, Montenegro
Wait until you walk into indescribably gorgeous Kotor! The approach isn't too shabby either with fortifications snaking up the hills. Kotor is small enough to walk around comfortably and felt more intimate than Dubrovnik.
Enter through either the Sea Gate, Northern Gate or Southern Gate into a labyrinth of picturesque, narrow streets, small squares, medieval churches and palaces.
Under the Venetians, Kotor became one of the best fortified cities in the region with walls twice the length of Dubrovnik.
So very gorgeous...

Kotor is a coastal town in Montenegro. It is located in a secluded part of the Gulf of Kotor. The city has a population of 13,510 and is the administrative center of Kotor Municipality.
The old Mediterranean port of Kotor is surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period. It is located on the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska), one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea. Some have called it the southern-most fjord in Europe, but it is a ria, a submerged river canyon. Together with the nearly overhanging limestone cliffs of Orjen and Lovćen, Kotor and its surrounding area form an impressive landscape.
Since the early 2000s Kotor has seen an increase in tourists, many of them coming by cruise ship. Visitors are attracted by the natural environment of the Gulf of Kotor and by the old town of Kotor. Kotor is part of the World Heritage Site dubbed the Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor.
