Sea Kayaking Devon - Dittisham - Dartmouth.
A paddle down the River Dart, out into the open sea, passing Dartmouth, and Kingswear. This was a super little trip, and is quite an easy one to do. I put in at Dittisham (Pron. dit - sum) after having a breakfast in Dartmouth. As stated, the tide was all wrong, I paddled against the last 2hrs of the flood tide, until I reached the Castle, and then it turned, ensuring I was paddling against it all day. It didn't matter much, it was a neap tide, and for the most part it was negligible. A spring tide would be altogether different though, and would be much harder work. This is a beautiful scenic area, and must rate as one of the most desirable places in the UK to reside. Some of the Properties, as you will see, are second to none, and personally, if I had the money, I would opt for here, over Sandbanks, in Dorset, any day of the year. But that is personal choice, anyway, see for yourself, and you decide? The trip down river was good, and the passing Steam Train was a real treat for me, but it was somewhat overcast, until I reached Dartmouth. I entered the 'Boat Float' little dock in the centre of town, and got some bacon from the shop for later! From here on, it was sublime, the weather superb, and seemed to get better as the day wore on. The original plan was to leave the Dart, and head for Berry Head, closing the gap from yesterday's paddle, but it was rather choppy out there, and it was too far of a journey to complete anyway. I was rewarded with an hour on the small, un-named beach. It was really excellent, had bacon barms, and a cup of tea, had a small fire, and just generally mellowed out. The return up river in the setting sun was a minor classic, I think, and will live long in the memory. This was my first time use of a Gopro, for Kayaking, and I was somewhat unprepared, with the mounts. This will be resolved for next time.

Lee Bay to Minehead by Sea Kayak (Devon, England)
In August 2013, 4 friends met at Lee Bay for an evening paddle to Combe Martin then camped over. Two more joined us the next day when we paddled on to camp at Porlock Weir, then we continued in the morning, paddling to Minehead. The weather was wet, sunny, windy and stormy with amazing rainbows and a choppy sea.

Went out on the kayaks in the evening to see the Seals out side of The River Dart's mouth. An amazing up sloe experience. Recorded with my Gopro Hero 5.
DARTMOUTH AND THIS ENGLAND
Dartmouth is a historic town in South Devon, England. A tourist destination on the western banks of the River Dart, a long tidal ria navigable for the 12 miles to Totnes. It’s in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, (AONB). Dartmouth was of strategic importance as a deep water port in the days of Sailing Ships. From here the Crusaders departed in 1147 and 1190. Dartmouth has been a “home” for the Royal Navy from the reign of King Edward 3rd. The Royal Naval College where all Royal Navy Officers are trained is still here. To prevent attacks from the sea the estuary of the River Dart was closed every night by a great chain stretched between Dartmouth Castle and Kingswear Castle on the opposite bank – so it was during World War 2! In 1373 Chaucer visited in his “Canterbury Tales”. In 1620 The Pilgrim Fathers sailed in here to the town’s Bayard’s Cove en route to America – the rest is history! Dartmouth contains many medieval streetscapes and historic buildings. The Royal Castle Hotel 1639. The Cherub Pub 1380. Dartmouth featured in the defeat of the Spanish Armada. “Greenway” the home of Sir Francis Drake - in the 20th. Century became the home of Novelist Dame Agatha Christie.

Sailing the UK coast Dartmouth to Plymouth, a boat sinks and more strong winds - SV Sea Cactus
Sailing the UK coastline in our small bavaria 30 cruiser, the weather is being a right pain, with various weather warnings for wind and rain putting a real strain on the schedule and planning to get west, we try to take the small windows of better weather and punch out west to plymouth.
Welcome back to cactus sailing, Please subscribe to our channel to keep up to date with our ventures, and of course if you like the video give it a thumbs up
You last joined us in Dartmouth when we hid from the worst of the weather, and this seems to be a reoccurring theme this week, unfortunately we have to deal with what weather were felt with, and with the rain lashing down we opted for a few nights in Dartmouth, I didn’t want to risk putting the crew off sailing by taking them out in the miserable rain and westerly winds.
Dartmouth is quite a nice place, Best if you have a dinghy to cross the river as the ferry can become expensive, and also a dinghy is great to explore further up the river if you're so inclined.
We saw a boat sat on a concrete ramp while out in town and didn’t think too much of it, but upon returning the tide had come in and sank it due to the angle it was tied up at.
A boat even tied up onto of it, we felt bad for the owner and collected a few floating things before sticking the hatches back on. The boat we later found out was ok in the end and did dry out eventually!
The weather was really starting to impact our schedule with a week already drifting by, a less than favourable forecast was on the horizon followed by more force 8 gales and rain. The forecast was a 5-7 with 8 at times, but on many forecasts was f6-7 worse, we decided to challenge ourselves with this one and head to plymouth, beating into it!
Coming out of Dartmouth we saw some dolphins which delayed getting the sails up as we all marvelled at them swimming with the boat, its often said this can be a good omen for the trip unfortunately i don’t think that was the case
We pressed on pass salcombe where we did think about pulling in, but decided against it, the waves built up and the wind increased further which made it difficult to film anything past salcombe, that and looking after the crew with copious amounts of ginger biscuits to combat mal de mer were the priority, even trying to make a cup of tea was low on the list with the reluctance to go below, Lunch was made on deck and consisted of dry bagels with some hastily thrown cheese on them
so we all huddled behind the spray hood and kept out the worst of the weather, while the waves broke over the bow and washed right over the spray hood - a first for us on our boat!

Sea Kayaking - Gopro test - Devon beach.
Just a quick one, testing my first attempt with the Gopro Hero 2, whilst kayaking. The trip was, from Dittisham, to Dartmouth, in South Devon. I had a gradely hour on this beach, which is the first secluded one, you come across, heading east, from the mouth of the Dart. This is truly one of the great treats of Sea Kayaking, accessing remote, inaccessible beaches like this. Although I do think this one can be accessed from above, it is still very secluded, and a bit of beach combing is mandatory. I will post the full video, in due course, but firstly, I have a decision, as to whether to post an earlier video, which was excellent, but the camcorder battery died, and the spare was left behind - Major pisser. But I could do the second half as a slide show, so I'll see how it goes.
