The Sea Organ is very beautiful, impressive! It will remain in my memory. I like the way it fits into the environment. I've been playing a pipe organ in church for twenty years now. This is a lovely way to connect with nature.

I knew that the sea when it laps at cavities, holes, underwater caves and hollows, produces different sounds. Using this experience - this phenomenon of collision of two media: the solid one and the liquid one, which, on planetary level, always deliver the phenomenon of sound - I developed the idea further.

We are going to use the daytime to collect the sunlight, and to transform it into electric energy. In the evening, after the sunset, we will use the electric energy to produce the energy of light, returning in a way, the energy given to us by the Sun, back to the Sun.

LEAD IN:
The sun-bleached town of Zadar has been attracting thousands of visitors since a unique piece of architecture was developed a few years ago.
The giant award-winning musical instrument built into the Croatian coast is played by the sea, providing a very different experience to visitors.
Now the architects behind the project are planning to add a solar powered amphitheatre to the structure, that will be used for music concerts and theatrical performances.
STORYLINE:
The three thousand year-old the coastal town of Zadar is no stranger to cultural heritage.
From the Roman forum to ancient churches it's history is etched in its architecture.
But there's a new-comer to this ancient town that has warmed the hearts of both locals and tourists.
At first glance this two year old construction doesn't seem to be the ideal coastal idyllic vista.
But these stark stone steps are part of a gigantic organ which is played day and night by the lapping of the sea.
Tourists and locals alike come here to relax, meditate or to simply enjoy the music.
One tourist from Germany says she loves the way the structure connects with nature.
She's not alone.
The creator of this unique construction is architect Nikola Basic.

According to Wikipedia...
The Sea organ (Croatian: Morske orgulje) is an architectural object located in Zadar, Croatia and an experimental musical instrument which plays music by way of sea waves and tubes located underneath a set of large marble steps.
Chaotic reconstruction work undertaken in an attempt to repair the devastation Zadar suffered in the Second World War, which turned much of the sea front into an unbroken, monotonous concrete wall.
The waves create somewhat random but harmonic sounds. The device was made by the architect Nikola Bašić as part of the project to redesign the new city coast (Nova riva), and the site was opened to the public on 15 April 2005.
The Sea Organ has drawn tourists and locals alike. In addition, white marble steps leading down to the water were built later. Concealed under these steps, which both protect and invite, is a system of polyethylene tubes and a resonating cavity that turns the site into a large musical instrument, played by the wind and the sea.
In 2006, the Sea Organ was awarded with the prize ex-aequo of the fourth edition of the European Prize for Urban Public Space.

In the coastal Croatian city of Zadar, there is a musical architechtural wonder. The Sea Organ or 'Morske orgulje' in Croatian, uses a system of pipes and chambers in tandem with the moving waves of the sea to create music!
So we took some time out from the Croatia Motorcycle tour and went to have a little look!
I struggled, but see if you can name that tune!!
Quite amazing to see and like nothing else I've ever witnessed!

Sea Organ of Zadar - at Night
Sea Organ - musical instrument played by the sea
(excerpted from oddmusic.com)
The musical Sea Organ (morske orgulje) is located on the shores of Zadar, Croatia, and is the worlds first musical pipe organs that is played by the sea. Simple and elegant steps, carved in white stone, were built on the quayside. Underneath, there are 35 musically tuned tubes with whistle openings on the sidewalk. The movement of the sea pushes air through, and depending on the size and velocity of the wave musical chords are played. The waves create random harmonic sounds.
This masterpiece of acoustics and architecture was created by expert Dalmatian stone carvers and architect Nikola Basic in 2005, who recently received the European Prize for Urban Public Space for this project. Many tourists come to listen to this unique aerophone, and enjoy unforgettable sunsets with a view of nearby islands. Famed director Alfred Hitchcock said that the most beautiful sunset in the world can be seen from precisely this spot on the Zadar quay. That was how he described it after his visit to Zadar, a visit he remembered throughout his life by the meeting of the sinking sun and the sea. Subscribe for more ambient videoscapes:

Zadar In Your Pocket - The Sea Organ (Morske orgulje)
Spring 2005 saw Zadar gain something absolutely unique: the worlds first pipe organ thats played by the sea. Its an art installation designed to let people enjoy the point where urban space meets the sea on Zadars new pier for cruisers on the end of the Old Town peninsula. Simple, elegant stone steps have been built on the quayside, perfect for sitting on. Underneath, 35 pipes end in whistles with openings on the quayside above. The movement of the sea pushes air through, and depending on the size and velocity of the wave chords are played. As you sit and listen to the ever-changing sounds created by the seas energy, you can bask in the sun, enjoy one of Zadars famous sunsets or enjoy the balmy night air. This is proving to be an extremely popular spot for culture and leisure, bringing new life to a new part of the city. The projects architect was Nikola Bašić, and a team of experts from Zagreb and the island of Murter engineered the organ itself.
