Mahabalipuram - Shore Temple - Mamallapuram - Temples of Tamilnadu - Living Wonders
The Shore Temple (built in 700–728 AD) is so named because it overlooks the shore of the Bay of Bengal. It is a structural temple, built with blocks of granite, dating from the 8th century AD. It was built on a promontory sticking out into the Bay of Bengal at Mahabalipuram, a village south of Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. At the time of its creation, the village was a busy port during the reign of Narasimhavarman II of the Pallava dynasty. As one of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, it has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. It is one of the oldest structural (versus rock-cut) stone temples of South India.
Shore temple is a complex of three temples, one large and two small, located right on the shores of the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal in Mahabalipuram, which was earlier known as Mamallapuram. During the Pallava Dynasty reign this was a port city of their kingdom which they ruled from Kanchipuram. It was built by the Pallava Dynasty when it was the trading port of the dynasty.

Modi - Xi Jinping visit Shore Temple in Mahabalipuram
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinoing today evening visited Shore Temples in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu.
SHORE TEMPLE
The Shore temple, an earliest representation of structural temple at Mamallapuram, belongs to the period of Narasimhavarman II alias Rajasimha Pallava (700-728 CE). As this temple stands on the bedrock near the sea it is globally called as sea shore temple. There are two shrines in this complex; one faces east and other faces west named as Kshatriyasimesvaram and Rajasimhesvaram respectively. Both the shrines, similar on plan, consist of a garbhagriha (sanctum) and an ardhamandapa (porch) andare installed with fluted Sivalinga. Behind the Sivalinga is Somaskanda (depiction of Siva and Parvati with infant Skanda) panel which also repeated on the either side walls of the porch. The superstructure of the Kstraiyashimesvaram is larger than that of Rajashimesvaram. It has an additional prakara of low height with small gopura-dvara at the east. In between these two temples, there is a small shrine provided with a cell and small porch and is without superstructure. It enshrines a figure of reclining Vishnu (Narapatima Pallavagriham). The courtyard of the temple complex is partly surrounded by an unfinished enclosure, along which are arranged rows of Nandis.
EXCAVATED REMAINS AT SHORE TEMPLE:
Sustained removal of the sand in the last few decades, brought to light several buried structures around the shore temple. Unique among them is the early Pallava period bathing-ghat like stepped structure, approximately 200m long. The steps are built of interlocking granite slabs over a laterite core. The intelligent interlocking method used here prevented the slabs form collapsing. This structure is running north to south parallel to the sea. In 1990, the excavation exposed a Bhuvaraha image, a miniature shrine and a well enclosed by an elliptical enclosure. These remains are carved on the bedrock. The miniature shrine, dedicated to Siva, has its sixteen-sided base carved out of the bedrock while the circular wall and superstructure are structural. The Bhuvaraha is shown retrieving the Earth symbolically from the deep ocean.

Mahabalipuram - Shore Temple | Mamallapuram |Temples of Tamilnadu | Living Wonders
Shore Temple
Location: Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu
Built in: 7th century
Dedicated to: Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu
Attraction: One of the earliest structural temples in South India
Significance: Listed as World Heritage Site
How to reach: One can easily reach Shore Temple by taking regular Buses or by hiring Taxis from anywhere in Tamil Nadu
Shore TempleShore Temple is a standing testimonial to the regal heritage of India. Located at Mahabalipuram, Shore Temples can easily be reached by taking regular buses or by hiring taxis from anywhere in Tamil Nadu. The nearest airport is located at Chennai that lies at a distance of 60 kms from Mahabalipuram. One of the most photographed monuments in India, Shore Temple is a structural monument on the shores of Bay of Bengal.
Built in the 7th century, Shore Temple depicts the royal taste of Pallava dynasty. During the reign of Rajasimha, the temple saw its construction when Pallava art was at its apex. Ravaged by wind and sea, the temple has witnessed the historical events of India. This work of genius was recognized and listed amongst the World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
Shore Temple comprises three shrines, where the prominent ones are dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. In the garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum), an image of Shivalinga embraces the site. At the rear end, one can find two shrines facing each other. Here, one shrine is dedicated to Ksatriyasimnesvara and other to Lord Vishnu. In the shrine, Lord Vishnu is imaged reclining on the 'Seshanag', which is a symbol of consciousness in Hinduism.
The exterior wall of the shrine to Lord Vishnu and the internal side of the boundary wall are elaborately carved and sculptured. The images on the sculpted panels depict scenes from everyday life. However, the sculptures are incredibly real and artistic. The exterior walls of the temple are segregated by plasters into bays, where the lower part has been impressed into a series of nurturing lions. The archeological department has excavated certain other figures from the site.
Shore Temple is no more a living temple. The structure of the temple makes one to contemplate and perhaps, it was erected basically as a work of art. The Pallavas were known to be the great patrons of art and were keen to create their own style of temple architecture. In the present day, Shore Temple makes the background of Mahabalipuram Dance Festival that is held in Jan /Feb every year. The festival was organized to promote the traditional dance as well as tourism in Mahabalipuram.
Architecture
Shore Temple is also acknowledged for being the first stone structure made by Pallavas. Before this, the monuments used to be carved out of the rocks or stones. Unlike other monuments of the region, Shore Temple is a five-storied rock-cut structural temple more willingly than monolithical. In southern India, this is one amongst the earliest and most important structural temples. The spire is extensively decorated with carvings and sculptures. In the recent years, a stone wall has been constructed to protect the shrine from further sea-erosion.
Perched on a 50 feet square plinth, the pyramidal structure raises to the extent of 60 feet. Presenting a typical specimen of Dravidian temple architecture, Shore Temple generates an exclusive combination of history and natural splendor. The temple was designed to grasp the first rays of the rising sun and to spotlight the waters after sunset. In the words of Percy Brown, Shore Temple served as a landmark by day and a beacon by night.

UNDERSEA ANCIENT TEMPLE FOUND AT MAHABALIPURAM !!!!
The phrase Seven Pagodas refers to a myth that has circulated in India, Europe, and other parts of the world for over eleven centuries. The group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, including the Shore Temple built in the 8th century under the reign of Narasimhavarman II, stand at the shore of the Bay of Bengal.
The Secret of Shore Temple - Mahabalipuram
Secret of Shore Temple - Mahabalipuram
Mahabalipuram is a temple town situated along the shores of the Bay of Bengal about 60 kms from the south Indian city of Chennai. Monolithic rock carved temples are refreshingly uncluttered, unlike later grandiose Dravidian architecture and tower over the waves behind a protective breakwater. This group of sanctuaries, founded by the Pallava kings, was carved out of rock along the Coromandel coast in the 7th and 8th centuries. It dates back to the 7th century when it was a thriving port of the Pallava Empire. There are eight rathas at Mahabalipuram, out of which five are named after the 'Pandavas' (five brothers) of Mahabharata and one after Draupadi. This site is also called Mamallapuram, named after the great wrestler Mamalla, the title of Pallava king Narasimha Varman I.
UNDERWATER Temples Found in Mahabalipuram?? The Seven pagodas of India

Website....................
Hey guys, today I am at the sea shore of an ancient site called Mahabalipuram in India . I have posted several videos about this place, but today I am going to show you some solid evidence of underwater temples, submerged in the sea. On the shore, you see a majestic temple known as Jalashayana temple. I bet you have never heard of this name, today people just know of it as the Shore temple, but an inscription inside the temple reveals that its original name was Jalashayana. What does it mean? It means Resting in Water. Very appropriate for a temple situated touching the sea. This temple was built at least 1300 years ago.
But my focus today is on the temples which are submerged in the sea. Are there really structures underwater in this ocean? Just outside the shore temple, there is a rock standing in water. Today, The shore temple is fenced , so I cannot walk to this place from the temple, but this was part of another temple structure. If you take a good look at this, you begin to see chisel marks, but if you go into the water, and then look at the other side, this is what you will see. Clearly, there is a small rectangular chamber carved and several deities are carved in this rock. All this was done at least 1300 years ago, and look, there is another rock peeping out in the middle of the water. That is also another ancient monument lying completely under water. This proves that there are ancient temples submerged in this ocean, waiting to be discovered.
But the most important evidence of these submerged temples is from the Archeology Department itself. Government Archeologists have explored underwater in 2002 and have confirmed that yes, there are quite a few broken pillars, damaged walls and other structures inside the water, belonging to ancient times. So, it is a fact that there are submerged temples in Mahabalipuram.
So, how many temples are there underwater? The answer was given by Marco Polo, a venetian traveler who traveled by sea, about 700 years ago. Marco Polo says there were 7 very large temples in the shore, and calls them 'The 7 Pagodas' . The temples must have been so large that they were visible from a long distance. In the last 700 years, this coastline has seen many tsunamis and the water level has consistently risen, leaving only the last of the 7 pagodas to be seen today.
This is why this temple is sometimes known as the Last Pagoda. Even this temple was consistently harassed by the sea water. Water used to frequently come into the temple, which is why the archeology department has placed a massive number of rocks as barriers to prevent this from happening.
I will explain this temple in a different video, but there is a strange little tank inside the complex. It is roughly a rectangular structure and today you can see there is a little bit of water, but I have visited this site many times. During dry seasons, you can see a key hole shaped hole in the center. This hole goes deep inside and is connected to the ground water level. Water comes out of this hole. And nearby there is a small cylindrical structure with various levels marked on it. Locals claim that this is an ancient flood indicator, and it can even foretell Tsunamis. See there is a deity carved inside the cylinder, locals say that if the water rises up to the neck of the deity, then the priest would make an announcement that everybody should evacuate the area, because there would be a flood in the next 48 hours. So, this was like a weather forecast device that could warn about the rising water level.
So, it is a fact there are 7 Pagodas in Mahabalipuram, but 6 of them are under the sea. I hope some day, I can lay eyes on them and reveal them to you. I am Praveen Mohan, thanks a lot for watching, don't forget to subscribe and also click on the bell button to get all the updates. Please give this video a thumbs up and do share it with your friends and I will talk to you soon. Bye!

Shore temple, Mahabalipuram
I was disappointed to see the present condition of the temple as most of the sculpture is gone due to harsh environmental attack of rough Sea and winds with salt content from last 1300 year, but still it reminded me the glorious past.
The Shore Temple built with blocks of granite in the 8th century AD. It has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. The temple structures, is severely damaged. Now It has been conserved by the Archaeological Survey of India by building protective trees and chemical treatment.

Shore Temple Mahabalipuram |
