Spotted this Spanish Dancer Pleurobranch during one of the great night dives around Malapascua Island in the Philippines. The area is famous for Thresher Sharks, but there is an abundance of other creatures around the area.

Diving Malapascua Island, Philippines
Malapascua Island is a small island on the north tip of Cebu. It has very nice beaches, but the main attraction is the diving at Monad Shoal, one of the best places in the world to see the rare Thresher shark.
Thresher shark is a large pelagic shark that can grow up to 5m (more typically 3-4m) and is easily recognizable by the long fin (1/3 of the body).
During 5 dives at Monad Shoal I saw plenty of Thresher sharks, Manta rays and Devil rays. On one of the early morning dives we were only 4 people on the shoal and experienced Thresher and Manta swimming together as well as a very long and close encounter with a Thresher shark.
I also had some nice dives at Gato Island (Cave, White-tip sharks, Cuttlefish, Seasnakes, Nudibranches) and Lapus-Lapus (swimming Frogfish, Nudibranches).

Scuba Diving in Romblon, Philippines with Three P Holiday and Dive Resort
In the Philippines, Romblon is known for its marble production, beautiful white beaches and clear blue waters. But unknown to many, even the locals, its best kept secret lies in the ocean. Hundreds of scuba divers and underwater macro photographers have gone to this quiet island in search for the tiniest creatures they can find. Getting here is not so easy as I myself have travelled almost 18 hours from Manila!
TRAVEL GUIDE:
This would be my second dive trip to Romblon as the previous trip with my friend, Jem, was cut short and I didn’t see the nudibranchs (sea slugs) I wanted to see that time around. Yes, you read that right, I was going to Romblon for sea slugs! Specifically the butterfly nudibranch (Cyerce nigra)!
I went diving with Three P (3P) one of the 2 dive shops in the island. I decided to go with them as I had gone diving with them previously and their location is closer to the beach, which I prefer. Also they specialize in the super macro photography and really know where to find the critters as they've been diving in the area for years!
I had upgraded my camera recently and thought I'd be able to get better photos this time around but I've completely forgotten and underestimated how tiny the nudibranchs and other creatures are in the area! Everything was 1cm or smaller and if it was bigger than 1 cm, that's already big in Romblon standards! :D
I'm so glad that I finally got to see the butterfly nudibranch of Romblon in this trip. Not just Cyerce nigra but also a Cyerce bourbonica! I also enjoyed observing the the ghost / phantom nudibranch (Melibe coleman) another rare nudibranch found in Romblon.
If you like super tiny critters then Romblon is the place to go! I am sure to be back once I've upgraded my gear and have improved on my photography and videography skills!
Although this trip was amazing the state of the reef left me sad. I hope when I come back someday the reef isn't as polluted and bleached!
Check out my Romblon Trash Haul video if you want to see the ugly side of the reef during this trip.

Diving in the Philippines - Gato Island
If weather is fine, consider diving at Gato Island. It is a small island within a one hour boat ride from Malapascua. You can see there white-tip sharks, sea horses, sea snakes, sea slugs, nudibranchs, moray eels and many other interesting creatures. Try to avoid days when the sea is rough. It would impact not just your comfort on board but also visibility under water.

It's a rare moment for me to videograph a nudibranch poop. Seeing them laying eggs is common, many videos and photos over the net. But to see a nudibranch poop and able to capture it on video is such a privileged. Do share it with your friends if you like it. Thanks. More videos to come.
Gato Island, Malapascua, Philippines. First of 3 dives January 2012
Gato is a small uninhabited island north west of Malapascua. One can easily do three different dives at Gato.
·The south wall is a beautiful wall covered with corals of all sort, hosting frogfish and nudibranchs. Large fields of purple soft coral are just one highlight of this dive.
·The tunnel, close to the guard house, is the main attraction in Gato. Around 30 meters long, it traverses the island in a depth of 6 to 10 meters. You will need a torch to do this dive. Sea snakes and crabs are the usual inhabitants of this cave and at the exit you can see white tip sharks swimming around or sleeping in the holes and crevices.
·The cathedral is a huge overhang where you will spend most of the dive in shallow depth between 5 and 9 meters. It is a spot for macro lovers as you can find nudibranchs and sea horses.
Other highlights in Gato are the pygmy sea horses and spider crabs.

Diving at Apo Island
Highlights of my dives around Apo Island, Dumaguete from Sep 1 to 3, 2014. Thus far, the best dive site I have visited in the Philippines. Balicasag would come in second. Anilao (although quite convenient for those coming from Metro Manila) would be third. I have gone scuba diving in El Nido but it was plankton season according to the locals (Jan to Feb), which results in poor visibility underwater. Hence, I reserve my judgement on El Nido until I have returned under better diving conditions. Next on my target list of dive sites are Puerto Galera, Verde Island, Apo Reef (Occidental Mindoro), Coron, Siargao and Tubataha Reef.
Apo Island's eco-tourism industry is an excellent success story that can be emulated by many coastal communities in the Philippines. In spite of the catastrophic damage to the marine sanctuary of the island brought about by the super typhoons over the past few years, it's coral reefs around the other parts of the island are still in great shape--better than those I have encountered in Anilao and comparable, if not better, than those in Balicasag. In addition to the marine sanctuary, the local community appears to have a genuine appreciation for the marine life--allowing them to grow to impressive sizes for conservation, eco-tourism and, ultimately, additional livelihood. In Apo Island, I am reminded of the unspoiled coral reef of Casabangan Bay, Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. That was over 30 years ago. I also see its future, if the town's Sangguniang Bayan quits dribbling and delaying the passage of the ordinance of the proposed marine protected area at Casabangan Bay. Inexcusable, unacceptable and an extraordinary waste of government in so far as government is already a waste in most every respect. A bunch of self-important over-entitled morons who expect extra-ordinary reward and recognition for ordinary day-to-day tasks they conduct at the pace of a sea slug.
