MIRISSA - KOGGALA | SRI LANKA TRAVEL GUIDE Ep 02
MIRISSA - KOGGALA | SRI LANKA TRAVEL GUIDE Ep 02
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mirissa is a small town on the south coast of Sri Lanka, located in the Matara District of the Southern Province. It is approximately 150 kilometres south of Colombo and is situated at an elevation of 4 metres above sea level. Mirissa's beach and nightlife make it a popular tourist destination.
Koggala is a small coastal town, situated at the edge of alagoon on the south coast of Sri Lanka, located in Galle District, Southern Province, Sri Lanka, governed by an Urban Council. Koggala is bounded on one side by a reef, and on the other by a large lake, Koggala Lake, into which the numerous tributaries of the Koggala Oya drain. It is approximately 139 kilometres (86 mi) south of Colombo and is situated at an elevation of 3 metres (9.8 ft) above the sea level.
** Places in the Video **
01. Secret Beach - Is made up of two different palm tree-lined beaches that come out and connect on a rocky headland. The first beach you see when you arrive opens out into the open ocean. If you want to go for a proper swim, then this is the place for you. As it is an unprotected slice of beach, there were a few waves around the day we visited, making it a bit rougher to swim in...
02. Koggala Turtle Hatchery – When you visit a ‘sanctuary’ or ‘conservation’ place etc you believe that it is in fact a safe and happy place for rescued animals to live, right? Unfortunately, the word ‘sanctuary’ etc is being used nowadays to trap and deceive tourists. I believe Koggala sea turtle farm & hatchery have good intentions with their project and are raising awareness for endangered sea turtles but I sadly would not recommend them.
03. Whale Watching - Mirissa makes for a picturesque stay by the sea, and is arguably the best and most popular area to go whale-watching in Sri Lanka. What makes it a prime spot for whale-watching is its geographic position: this is where the continental shelf is at its narrowest, with ocean depths reaching 1km a few kilometres offshore…
04. Weligama Snake Farm - Just past Weligama, and about 12 km north of Mirissa, is a snake farm. That’s a bit of a misnomer, however. It’s not really a farm. There’s no crazy guy breeding crazy snakes with other crazy snakes to create crazier snakes. It’s really a small snake conservatory. But don’t let its size fool you.
05. Martin Wickramasinghe museum - The house in which Martin Wickramasinghe was born has inspired the Martin Wickramasinghe Trust to established a Folk Museum Complex, surrounded by a restored ecosystem planted with hundreds of varieties of indigenous trees and shrubs in which bird life abounds. The house and the surroundings bring to life a little part of the Koggala which is so vividly depicted in Wickramasinghe’s writings.
06. Koggala Boat Safari – This safari includes Spice Island, Cinnamon Island, Temple Island, Bird Island, cinnamon demonstration and fish therapy.

BABY TURTLES, STRAY DOGS & THE DALAWELLA BEACH SWING | TRAVEL VLOG #57
Dalawella is one of the nicest areas on the South coast of Sri Lanka. In today's video we release baby turtles, visit a dog care center, and drop by the Insta-famous beach swing on Dalawella Beach.
Releasing the baby turtles was truly one of the most amazing experiences we've had so far. It was a bit hard to film, seeing as we didn't want to hold the turtles for more than a few seconds before releasing them (it was more than clear that they just wanted to swiiiim and start their new life ASAP), but fortunately we released enough to get some good shots of them anyway. After a lot of (google) research, we decided to visit the Sea Turtle Conservation Project on Koggala Beach close to Dalawella. They work with the Sri Lankan government to save and preserve sea turtles.
The baby turtles were rescued when they were eggs and hatched in a safe environment. The organisation saves both adult turtles and turtle eggs. After the turtles hatch, they swim around for about 5 days to make them stronger before they are released. Then the turtles are released on the beach where they walk towards the water by themselves so they imprint on that particular beach.
If you pick up a baby turtle in nature, you risk putting your scent on it so its mother won't recognize it. These baby turtles are orphans, and the primary objective of this organisation is to save the sea turtles because they are endangered.
If you want to visit as well, look for the Sea Turtle Conservation Project on TripAdvisor or look for Sea Turtle Hatchery Koggala on Google Maps. This place is by no means perfect, but they do what they can with what they've got, and they try to educate the public to stop the locals from eating the turtle eggs, and from what I understood they also buy the eggs back from them.
When we were there, the signs clearly said that we were not allowed to touch the turtles (except from the ones we released), which is as it should be. However, some of the reviews state that people are allowed to pick them up. We didn't see that, and we would definitely recommend that you do NOT pick up the turtles. All in all, we can recommend this place, because they do a great job of rescuing both turtles and their eggs, but there is some room for improvement.
The dog care center was an amazing ecperience as well. It's located a few kilometres outside of Unawatuna and only a 15 minute walk from Dalawella Beach. If you want to visit, look for Dog Care Clinic | DCC on Google Maps :)
The famous swing on Dalawella beach is a must-see when you're in the Unawatuna area. We had a bit of trouble finding it, because the Dalawella beach on Google Maps is actually a little East of this place. It belongs to a small hotel called Dream Cabana, and you have to pay 500 rupees to use the swing. If there's no line, you can use it for as long as you'd like (that day), once you've paid the 500 rupees (≈3,5 USD).

Hi there! I'm Anne-Li – Danish girl, globetrotter, travel vlogger, blogger and digital nomad traveling the world with my partner in crime and long-term boyfriend Mathias. Spending a month in Budapest every summer taught us that traveling does not have to be expensive and that slow travel is the way to go – for us. We have been traveling full-time since September 2016, and we usually base ourselves in one place for at least a month or two. This way of traveling is not only budget friendly – it also means that we can take our time and really explore and enjoy the place we're in. We eat local food, shop at local markets, meet local people and enjoy experiencing different cultures – all the while seeking out the best wifi and exploring everything there is to explore. Everyday is another adventure, and we’d love for you to be part of it!

Sea Turtle Conservation - turtle farm in Kosgoda, Sri Lanka
Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project in Sri Lanka.
Dudley Perera's project has been underway since 1988. The main aim of the project is to monitor local sea turtle activity and conserve the local nesting sites. We aim to make the public more aware of how endangered these beautiful creatures are and just how important it is to help protect them before it is too late.
One of the most important activities of the project is its hatchery. Within the sanctuary of the project, collected and rescued eggs can hatch safely away from predators before being released into the sea. In addition, a certain number from each hatching are kept back for a short period for 'headstarting' before release.
The hatchery program is designed to maximise the number of hatchlings reaching the sea and surviving through the critical stages of their early life.
Only a few hatchlings from each batch will ever make it to adulthood. Therefore every nest-ground, every egg, every hatchling and every turtle is crucial to the survival of the species. Unfortunately, sea turtles face many dangers.
The project's work relies on fundraising and grants. Every year, the project helps clear and maintain the local beach, protecting vital nesting-grounds (particularly important after the devastation of the Tsunami) and releases thousands of hatchlings. When you consider how long the project has been going, you can begin to understand the impact the project has!
The project is also resilient having survived the devastation of The Boxing Day tsunami of 26 December 2004.

Sea Turtle Hatchery - Sri Lanka
Travel Guide Sri Lanka :
Sri Lanka is one of the world’s most important breeding spots for the endangered sea turtle, but heavy development of the coast has contributed greatly to their ever-declining number. To combat that trend, a number of hatcheries have opened along the southern coast.
