DIVING WITH SEA TURTLES - thelonghose marine conservation project nº1
Thelonghose team had the chance to meet and dive with a family of 4 green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) on Tenerife. This encounter affected them so deeply that they are now setting up a marine conservation project to contribute to sea turtles protection.
Sea turtles appeared in our oceans more than 200 million years ago. These animals have a tough early life, with only one out of 1000 baby turtles reaching adulthood. Luckily, adults only had few predators, mainly sharks. Their biggest threat is us. Currently, all sea turtle species except the Australian flatback (Natator depressus) are included in the IUCN Red List as endangered or critically endangered (IUCN, 2007).

Human - Crocodile conflict in Sri Lanka - Mr. Dinal J. S. Samarasinghe - Part - 1
The dump site in Aluthgama next to the vegetable market and the Bentota River in Sri Lanka
Recorded 23rd December 2005 11:10 GMT+05:30.
The dump site next to the Bentota River and the vegetable market is full and it is time to clean up. The Local Authorities ensures that it is done: a bulldozer is brought in and the garbage is pushed into the river. Then a layer of clay is put on top of the remaining garbage, and the site is ready for receiving new garbage. In 2-3 months the bulldozer will be back. In the week after the clean-up plastic and organic waste is drifting up and down the river with the tide until it is taken into the sea or gets trapped in the mangroves and on the river banks.
Apart from the damage that the dump site potentially causes to the local society in the form of diseases, environmental impact, etc., the site might have an impact on tourism. It seems reasonable to assume that tourists will react negatively to this kind of impressions and will be less inclined to recommend this areat to other potential travellers.
The economic consequences are unknown.
Update Jan. - Mar. 2008:
The dumpsite is no longer used by the Local Authorities. Access to the site has been blocked by a bank of clay preventing vehicles from entering the site. Collected waste is brought to other sites - primarily the bigger dump site in Dharga Town further up river.
Update Sep. 2008:
According to local sources the site is in use again.
Update dec. 2008:
According to other local sources the dump site isn't used anymore.
Update Dec. 2010: The dump is closed, and the waste is now covered in vegetation.

Sri Lanka River Safari and soooooooo much more........
Sri Lanka was originally supposed to be just a stopover in between Vietnam and India but ended up being an amazing adventure all in itself. Sri Lanka had river safaris, Islands for sale, delicious coconuts, baby sea turtles, and even an endangered albino turtle. These were just a few of the highlights that were experienced when traveling through Sri Lanka.

SriLanka-Kosgoda 2008
November 2008, I was invited to help with a post-tsunami project.
The project is an initiative of Orange Angel, a Dutch foundation.
The main man of this all is Jos Nijenhuis, former director and founder of FOX, a Dutch travel organization.
He was intensely involved in the aftermath of the 2004 Tsunami. Huge parts of the coastline were totally destroyed by the killer waves. The travel company wanted to 'do something' for the survivors.
This resulted (to make a long story short) in the rebuilding of a village and now, in 2008, the opening of a school for ceramics where villagers can work and learn.
I am happy and proud to have been involved in this. It is a super initiative and most of all, it is supported by local people such as the Visit Lanka- organization.
The humble part I so far played was instructing students from Moratuwa University, Colombo (who spoke English) and helping them in instructing the villagers how to work with the glazes, kilns and such.
This was a most rewarding experience.
The film below gives an impression of the school, the village and my 2 weeks of working with the students.

SRI LANKA nov. 2003 SIMONETTA & NINO S@N
Escursione davvero splendida.
