Lions Club of Patong beach & underwater clean up
The Patong Beach Clean Up Day 2008 was held on November 8th by the Lions Club of Patong
and volunteer divers from World Dive Team, All 4 Diving, Seaworld, Scandinavian Divers, & Mermaid Liveaboard companies
and the local students of 4 schools.
They came from Wat Suwan Kiriwong School, Sai Nam Yen School, Ketho School in Kathu and Kalim School.
Bangkok Hospital Phuket provided an ambulance back up.
The organizers also set up a stall selling their friends and supporters books about the Tsunami and the Marine environment.
The Patong Clean Up Day was organized in order to collect all kinds of waste under water and on Patong beach,
by The Lions Club of Patong Beach, especially Mr.Pong Chongchit who was emcee and quite a funny speaker:
The organizers arranged a draw to split the students into five coloured teams,
of blue, red, green, yellow, and light blue
with free t-shirts for each student.
The students started their beach clean up quickly as they were competing for the most rubbish collected for each team. Most tourists had not yet arrived on the beach, so it was quite clean already but some tourists there seemed to be happy to watch the kids work hard.
The kids were picking up every little bit of rubbish they could find, however small.
They were supported by the Tourist Police volunteers and sponsors who provided boats and equipment.
Meanwhile the divers went in long tail boats with their team colours, on to the bay near Paradise Beach. They chose this bay because they knew there would be rubbish on the sea bed.
Two divers, Virginia & Chris, told us what they were looking for:
Two more divers, Steve & his buddy, brought up bags of more rubbish and anchors which looked heavy.
The nets & string were the most common things collected.
Johan & David showed us what they got:
The local fishermen should be ashamed to see what they have left in the sea for others to collect.
There were even some hula hoops
and a large plastic object which looked like scaffolding. Chris said it was about 30-40 kilos in weight:
Who knows where it came from, but it looked ugly.
The Scandinavian divers in the green team found a fishing rod which was added to the pile of ropes, nets and other rubbish.
The students collected the rubbish for their teams from the boat,
including dangerous looking objects.
The light blue team was happy to receive the heavy plastic object.
The yellow team of divers also brought in some heavy items for their kids.
They weighed all the items like the anchor which was 33
kilos and added the numbers up for each teams indicator tree.
The rubbish included all the bags which the kids filled up from the beach that morning, totaling over 625 kilos,
because of heavy items such as this tyre which was 65 kilos.
All the kids & divers deserved a nice lunch for their efforts.
The Phuket Aquarium also set up an educational games booth to identify marine life.
The Phuket Governor Preecha came along to inspect the rubbish collected. The Lions Club of Patong Beach president Claude de Crissey showed him
and Kathu Police Chief Krissak what they think should be done about the increasing amount of rubbish found on Patongs previously pristine beach and clean sea.
Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation CEO Paiboon also came to the closing ceremony, with a thank you speech by the governor:
The winning team was the reds, for the most weight but they all deserved prizes
for doing the dirty jobs others should do.
The Lions Club gave out 20 scholarships to some of the worthy students.
The kids were very happy and hope their scholarships help them to study for their future careers like policemen, perhaps to stop pollution in Patong.
Claude thanked the children, with a picture
The police chief also gave trophies to their teachers who are important messengers for the environment.
A PADI representative thanked the divers and tourist police too.
At the end, everyone joined the Lions members to roar their thanks on a great job done.

We were a little tired of all of the noise, activities and lack of peaceful waters at Patong Beach so we jumped onto the free Paradise Beach shuttle for a day on the beach. Although we were not impressed with the snorkeling there were plenty of other activities to enjoy: volley ball, soccer (football), live music, restaurants, a fully stocked bar, diving (free intro dive) and concerts! It was a very relaxing day for us ????

Safety on Phuket beaches after murder -- various views

Not only natural beauty can attract tourists to visit any destination, but safety is one of the main factors contributing to travelers' decisions. Our special report today takes a look at security and safety measures at Phuket's busy Patong beach and quiet beach in Phuket.
The island of Phuket is home to many spectacular beaches, some so popular and busy, some seductively hidden and undiscovered by those who are keen to explore the secrets of nature. Patong beach, for example is one of Phuket's or even Thailand's famous beaches for tourists around the world. Due to its diversity offered in sun sand sea, water sports and shopping plus its nightlife which is an excitement many don't miss while visiting Phuket. Management is a key word for tourist destinations in order to accommodate large numbers of tourists and businesses. The Patong Municipality has been developing infrastructure and facilities to catch up with tourism growth. The 2004 tsunami experience led to local governments to learn that not only natural beauty is needed for tourists, but also they have to be secure and assured of safety plus a good environment. This is being recognized by the local administrators, like Pian Keesin, Patong Mayor. Apart from 3 early warning towers in case of any sign of natural disaster as precautionary measures, Patong also currently operates Closed Circuit Televisions or CCTVs at 16 locations on 3 major roads Thaweewong, Rat-Utit and PhraBaramee. The equipment helps police to monitor traffic and crime as the Kathu police superintendent Pol. Col. Krissak Song-moon-naak, who oversees Patong area, explains: The CCTV system currently operational is one of the very first systems introduced. We use it for traffic plus for security. The technology then needs to improve as it can show traffic accidents with duty officers each shift to control or monitor the operation.
In addition, the police are receiving another 4 million baht funding from Patong Municipality to have 10 more CCTVs to cover more areas. The equipment is reported to be more hi-tech and the public will be able to access the camera views via the Internet. Patong mayor confirms its emphasis on supporting the operator. One main issue is safety. The municipality invests some money to obstruct any crime activities to enable police to locate wrong doers.
On the other hand, the 10 kilometre long Mai Khao beach, located just north of Phuket airport is relatively quiet and peaceful at several points like the area near the campsite far from big hotels and more resorts being built elsewhere. Tourists used to compliment it saying it is like paradise as a small local bungalow operator, Mon-si-karn Ruck-rang-si-man-suk told us: Most guests say this is paradise and we provide equally special services to each client. The more private the more remote it gets, may sometimes lead to more need for safety, as the recent murder on Mai Khao illustrated. Manote Chupak, advisor to the Phuket Tourism and Sports Centre agrees with the idea of local participation in monitoring tourist safety: We need to establish more networks & have local villagers participate in taking care of tourists.
On the government side, the Tourism and Sports Minister, Mr Weerasak Kow-su-rat, on his recent visit to Phuket, sought cooperation from local authorities to install new measures. He stressed that in some areas beaches can be quiet and remote so more beach guards are needed. At the same time, the Ministry is introducing whistles for tourists as a tool to seek help in case of emergencies especially violence against women, as he showed us:
Finally let's hear some comments by (Swedish & Slovakian) tourists on Kata beach to hear what they think of safety here on Phuket's & nearby beaches:

About Phuket, Thailand...
Phuket has something for everyone !
Credit:
The island of Phuket has incredibly beautiful and varied landscapes: the turquoise blue sea, fine sand long beaches, bays, mountains covered with forests, lagoons, all with lush vegetation.
The natural hospitality of Thais make Phuket a destination of dreams and brought tourists from around the world since the early 80s
Phuket, nicknamed The Pearl of South or The Pearl of the Andaman, is located on the southwest coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea.
Phuket is the largest island of Thailand with an area of about 550 km2 (50 km from north to south and 20km from east to west)
This island has the distinction of being connected to the mainland by a bridgethe Sarasin Bridgelocated at the north of Phuket
the majority of the population is Buddhist,
The most touristic part of Phuket is Patong with its shopping and nightlife.
The most popular beaches on the island are Patong, Kata, Karon, Nai Harn and Bang Tao.
By boat you can easily go to visit the surrounding islands such as Kho PhiPhi, Kho Lanta, Racha Island,James Bond Island, Krabi ....
Bangkok and Singapore are only a one hour flight. It is also the largest island and the richest of Thailand.
It is divided into 3 districts (Amphoe): Thalang in the north, Kathu at the center and Mueang Phuket at the south. The administrative capital is Phuket Town (or Phuket City)
Besides the beautiful beaches, the nice climate, the low cost of living and the amazing quality of life , Phuket is one of the most prosperous parts of Asia .Probably Phuket would continue its fairly strong housing boom in the coming years, huge projects are planned: creation of new marinas, Project casinos, tramway project ...The province continues to develop its infrastructure which already offers excellent international schools and hospitals. The international airport has just doubled its capacity can accommodate a traffic of 16 million tourists a year. The completion of Phuket airport’s expansion next year is expected to have a positive effect on the real estate market .
Phuket also offers a variety of activities, the most popular of which are diving, golfing, and of course relaxing. The seven golf courses rivaling beautiful scenery and views of the Andaman Sea make the island a paradise for golfers. As for the beauty of the seabed, it attracts diving enthusiasts worldwide.
