The Tiwi Islands: S04 Northern Territory E1 Road Trip Lap NT
The Tiwi Islands are resided upon by a small Indigenous population of Aborigines. On the islands of Bathurst and Melville, many people live by traditional customs and practices.
We were very fortunate to spend four days with a lovely family, who taught us how to hunt for bush tucker, fish and search the mangroves for food and live off the land. Immersed in the Aboriginal culture, we formed great friendships and appreciation for this Indigenous culture and how it is being kept alive today and into the future.

As people in mainstream Australian society turn away from religion... the trend is being reflected on the Tiwi Islands off the Northern Territory.
Elders in the staunchly Catholic Islands are urging their community to do more to bring a lost generation back to the church.
Melanie Arnost reports from Melville island.
[0]Catholics at Pirlingimpi celebrated Easter at their local church on Melville Island off Darwin...
[1]UPSOT easter singing
but with only 50 people out of a community population of 400 regularly attending, it's clear going to church isn't everyone's priority.
[2]GRAB - Marius Puruntatameri - Tiwi Islands Shire
A lot of people, they should be coming to church service but aren't anymore.
GRAB: sister barbara tippolay - Tiwi nun
[3]There is the generation missing, and we know there is and we're trying to see in which ways we can bring that middle generation to come in.
[4]Community elders have grown up as Catholics since the first mission on the island was established in the 1940s.
[5]They're unimpressed by the empty seats at church...
[6]They say these days... it's just the elderly and young Tiwi Islanders attending...
[7]Substance abuse is being blamed for the absence of the middle generation.
Cyril Kalippa - Tiwi Land council
[8]it's a shame but what do you do? there's other things that are more important to some of us, the club, having the club here to drink and then you've got the ganja as well.
[9]But the Pirlingimpi faithful haven't lost hope.
sister barbara tippolay - Tiwi nun
[10]I think deep down the faith is still there but it has to start again beginning with families trying to build up their children.
Cyril Kalippa
[11]If we don't do that then, that's it. the new pope won't bring people back to church. it's us working together.
[12]Elders hope bringing the youngest to church... will encourage the missing middle generation as well.

Darwin Harbour Clean-Up 2019
Organised by Larrakia Nation, the tenth Darwin Harbour Clean-Up was on Monday 15 July and saw over 140 people out on the water and around the coastline removing rubbish from Darwin Harbour.
A total of 1.74 tonnes of rubbish was collected, with some the most common items being fireworks cardboard and plastic parts, aluminium cans, plastic drinks bottles and other plastic pieces and bags.
Coastal rubbish collection is part of regular ranger duties but should also be something everyone plays a part in – whether through picking up rubbish whenever you see it or preventing it entering the environment in the first place.
Rubbish can pose a danger to wildlife and can cause issues thoughtout the food chain as it breaks down into tiny particles.
As with previous years, the clean-up was strongly supported by private businesses, community groups, government agencies, non-government organisations and the general community.
Along with removing rubbish from the harbor the main aim of the Darwin Harbour Clean-Up is to raise awareness of the sources and effect of rubbish ending up in the sea and to encourage everyone to bin it or take it with you.
The 2019 Darwin Harbour Clean-Up was organised by Larrakia Nation with funding support from City of Darwin, Conoco Phillips, INPEX-operated Ichthys LNG and Territory Natural Resource Management.
