The Inaugural meeting of Seaford Golf Club.
8th September 1887
The first general meeting of Seaford Golf Club.
A Pioneering Club
Seaford was one of the first towns in England to establish a golf club. The first two golf clubs to be established in Sussex were at Eastbourne and here in Seaford where the club was founded by a small number of local residents on 6th August 1887.
There was obviously much work to do – land to be obtained and members to be recruited and all this was done prior to the first General meeting which was held just a few weeks later on 8th September.
The First Course
150 acres of land adjacent to Seaford Head were leased from Mr Launcelot Harison of Sutton Place, Seaford (now Newlands School) the rent was £70 per year. A golf course of twelve holes was established on the land however the land was still grazed by sheep; the shepherd’s cottage occupied by Ruben Russell occupying the centre of the course.
The twelve holes were laid out by a Mr Thompson of Felixstowe. Coincidentally like Seaford Head, the Felixstowe golf course also overlooks a Martello Tower. The course was one and a quarter miles in distance and if eighteen holes were required the first five holes were replayed with an extra hole adjacent to the Shepherd’s Cottage.
It was extended to an 18 hole in 1889. The course and the clubhouse were taken over by Seaford Urban District Council in May 1928. In 1940 the Course was requisitioned by the military for the duration of the war and ploughed up for food production, some of this being evident today on the 4th, 15th and 18th holes. It was reconstructed in 1946 and is now the responsibility of Seaford Town Council who manage the Course from their offices in Seaford.

Seaford Cricket 2019 Roundup
We interviewed our students along with Head of Cricket, Chris Adams and our Sports Coach Natalie Miller (who coaches cricket & netball) about the popularity of cricket at Seaford. We’ve seen growth in both boys’ and girls’ cricket in recent years and our strategy is to continue this growth in the future.
Reflecting on the season our Headmaster John Green said: “There is a real buzz around Seaford Cricket and the new eight lane net facility and extra square have been full of girls and boys practising under the watchful eye of Mr Chris Adams and the cricket staff. There have been some notable performances throughout the College but a winning performance by our 1st XI against a strong MCC XI was right up there. There have been a lot of Girls’ cricket matches throughout the College and our Girls’ 1st XI got off to a winning start against Lancing. A special mention for Harriet Thornton who made her 1st XI debut for the boys’ team this season. We have introduced Girls’ cricket into the Prep and Senior School and lots of the sessions are taught in a co-ed environment which is fantastic to see. The girls are really enjoying the sport and this is something that will continue to grow as we move forward.”

Seaford is a coastal town in East Sussex, on the south coast of England. Lying east of Newhaven and Brighton and west of Eastbourne, it is the largest town in Lewes district. In the Middle Ages, Seaford was one of the main ports serving Southern England, but the town's fortunes declined due to coastal sedimentation silting up its harbour and persistent raids by French pirates. The coastal confederation of Cinque Ports in the mediaeval period consisted of forty-two towns and villages; Seaford was included under the Limb of Hastings.
Seaford's fortunes revived in the 19th century with the arrival of the railway connecting the town to Lewes and London. It became a small seaside resort town, and more recently a dormitory town for the nearby larger settlements of Eastbourne and Brighton, as well as for London.
The town lies on the coast near Seaford Head, roughly equidistant between the mouths of the River Ouse and the Cuckmere. The Ouse valley was a wide tidal estuary with its mouth nearly closed by a shingle bar, but the tidal mudflats and salt marshes have been inned (protected from the tidal river by dykes) to form grassy freshwater marshes (grazing marsh). To the north the town faces the chalk downland of the South Downs, and along the coast to the east are the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs, and Beachy Head. This stretch of coast is notified for its geological and ecological features as Seaford to Beachy Head Site of Special Scientific Interest.
In 1620 and 1624, the sheriff and jurat of Seaford was William Levett, of an Anglo-Norman family long seated in Sussex. William Levett of Seaford owned the Bunces and Stonehouse manors in Warbleton, probably inheriting them from his father John Levett, who died in 1607. Levett sold the estates in 1628 and died in 1635, his will being filed in Hastings. Two local half-hourly circular bus services, the 119 and 120, are provided by Cuckmere Buses (Monday-Friday) and Compass Bus on Saturdays, who also run bus 126 from Seaford via Alfriston to Eastbourne.
Brighton & Hove operate two frequent bus services, the 12 and 12A (up to every 10 minutes), routed along the A259 south coast road through Seaford (the 12A goes via the Chyngton Estate on the east side of Seaford) which take passengers to Brighton or Eastbourne which both have extensive onward bus services. Seaford station is the terminus of the line from Brighton via Lewes and Newhaven. The local train services are operated by Southern.

Seaford is a coastal town in East Sussex, on the south coast of England,] Lying east of Newhaven and Brighton and west of Eastbourne, it is the largest town in Lewes district, with a population of about 27,000.
Between 1350 and 1550, the French burned down the town several times.[citation needed] In the 16th century, the people of Seaford were known as the cormorants or shags because of their enthusiasm for looting ships wrecked in the bay. Local legend has it that Seaford residents would, on occasion, cause ships to run aground by placing fake harbour lights on the cliffs.
Seaford's fortunes revived in the 19th century with the arrival of the railway connecting the town to Lewes and London. It became a small seaside resort town, and more recently a dormitory town for the nearby larger settlements of Eastbourne and Brighton, as well as for London .cliff collapses are common at Seaford head
