Stornoway to Lowestoft
From the mid 1800s to the mid 20th century Lowestoft was a major herring fishing port on the east coast of England, it is in fact the most easterly town in the British Isles. The herring worked their way round the coast of Britain on their spawning migration arriving off the coast of Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth in the autumn. The herring were followed round the coast by the Scottish 'Fisher Girls' who gutted and packed the herring in each port (joining local women doing the same work) working their way southerly. 1913 was the peak year of the herring fishery with about 600,000 tons of Herring being landed in Lowestoft and Yarmouth in that season. This song is about a Fisher girl from Stornoway who, working her way down the coast with the fish, arrives in Lowestoft where she meets and falls in love with a local plough boy. Two fictional characters but many of the Scots women did indeed meet local men and settled here in Lowestoft and Yarmouth.
Most of the photos and film derive from the late 19th and early 20th century.
The video was created as part of a CLSD media training course in conjunction with 'I Made This'. Macbeth Vision4
Animation sequence for a theatre production of William Shakespeare's Macbeth (starring Abi Titmuss), taking place at the Seagull Theatre (Lowestoft, England) during November 2009.
This is one of the four commissioned animation sequences that were used to portray the dream-like qualities of the 4 Visions from Act 4, Scene 1 of the script.
During the live performances, actors would perform on the stage, while occasional live-action & animation sequences were projected onto a screen above the stage.
