Boat Trip to Seal Island (Hout Bay - South Africa)
(EN) Hout Bay (Afrikaans: Houtbaai, from Afrikaans for Wood Bay) is the name of a coastal suburb of Cape Town, South Africa with a mix of neighbourhoods from the very rich to the very poor. It lies in a valley on the Atlantic seaboard of the Cape Peninsula and is twenty kilometres south of the Central Business District of Cape Town. The name Hout Bay can refer to the town, or the bay on which it is situated, or the whole valley.
Hout Bay, also known as Dungeons to the surfing community, is one of the sixteen recognised big wave spots around the globe. The annual Red Bull Big Wave Africa competition is held here. Swells of up to 47 feet (14.3 m) have been recorded here as well as numerous deaths as a result of boating, diving and surfing-related incidents in the area. The spot itself consists of various reefs. The most popular is called 2.5 since it is 2.5 metres (8.20 ft) deep. Behind it is 3.5, which is 3.5 metres (11.48 ft) deep. There is also a reef that is reputed to be able to hold a 100 ft (30 m) high wave, should one ever come. Before the use of jet-skis to enter and leave the area, the surfers who braved these waters had to paddle through a dark and deep channel, through to where the waves break.
Hout Bay is a popular tourist attraction among both local and international visitors. There are a variety of restaurants in the village as well as two hotels (the Hout Bay Manor and the Chapman's Peak Hotel), many bed and breakfasts and self-catering accommodation where visitors can stay. The harbour is a worthwhile visit, as there are spectacular views of the bay and boat rides to Duiker Island and around the Sentinel. Chapman's Peak Drive is one of the world's most scenic mountain drives and has recently undergone renovations to ensure the safety of travellers using the route. The East and West forts built by the Dutch in the 18th century can also be visited, with the original cannons and barracks still standing on the slopes of Chapman's Peak. The East fort is the oldest operating gun battery in the world. The mountains surrounding Hout Bay also make for good hiking trails. In the same area is the bronze statue of a leopard looking out over the ocean.
The Red Bull Big Wave Africa surfing contest is held on the other side of the Sentinel mountain, at the famous Dungeons. Some of the biggest waves in the world are found here and these attract surfers from all over the world. The competition can only be held during May to August, when the waves reach heights of 15 ft (4.57 m) to 20 ft (6.10 m).
The Hout Bay Yacht Club is situated in the working harbour and provides moorings for both recreational, fishing and sailing boats.

Duiker Island also known as Seal Island holds a large colony of cape fur seals just off Hout Bay near Cape Town, South Africa. It is only really a small rocky outcrop, but hosts a massive horde of bachelor seals, sunning themselves on the rocky shore. There can be up to 45 000 seals at any given time around the Island.
There are a number of ferries running every 40mins to take you to see the seals up close. You can also include this experience in a peninsula day tour.

A MAGNIFICENT great white shark leaps from the water to take a chunk out of a would-be seal. These amazing full breaches were conceived using a foam rubber seal decoy – which is dragged behind a shark cage diving boat, as a way of enticing the hungry predator. Shot by filmmakers Mark van Coller and Morne Hardenberg in Cape Town, between June and August of 2013 and 2014, the footage demonstrates the frightening power and agility of the iconic animal. But achieving such incredible shots is only possible if the conditions are right.

Seal Island is a small land mass located 5.7 kilometres (3.5 miles) off the northern beaches of False Bay, near Cape Town, in South Africa. The island is so named because of the great number of Cape fur seals that occupy it. It is 5 acres (2.0 hectares) in area and home to 64,000 cape fur seals.[1] It is home to seabirds too and it is likely that non-marine species (in no great number) fly there to breed as well (see external link to the Avian Demographic Unit at the University of Cape Town). The island is an outcrop of the Cape granite and rises no more than about four to six metres above the high tide mark. The island is long and narrow- 800 metres by 50 metres. There is no vegetation or soil of any significance and no beach. A radar mast was built on the island during World War II by a crew who lived in prefabricated huts for the duration of the construction but this tower gradually succumbed to corrosion and was blown over in a winter storm in 1970. All that remains of it is rusty, twisted metal. There are the ruins of a few huts and other structures from the sealing and guano-collection era (first half of the 20th century). Some rock inscriptions made by sealers in the 1930s are still evident.
