Seal Marine Conservation - A day at Seal Rescue Ireland
Seal Marine Conservation - A day at Seal Rescue Ireland
In this episode we arrive in Courtown. As you know we love marine conservation and we had the opportunity to visit Seal Rescue Ireland.
We were really excited to be given this opportunity to learn about Seal Marine Conservation and to learn lots of interesting facts about seals.
There is only one seal sanctuary and rescue centre in the whole of the Republic of Ireland. This is a real challenge for Seal Rescue Ireland as it is such a large area to cover.
We were met by Melanie, Jesh and the team. It was so nice of Operations Manager - Melanie to spend so much of her valuable time with us giving us lots of interesting and educational facts on seals.
It was a fabulous day meeting the seals and hearing about the dangers they face and how Seal Rescue Ireland are working hard to save these wonderful animals and to educate the public on what they can do to help prevent these issues.
We were honoured to be able to watch and film 3 seals release back into the sea. The first one was Maui. He was one Lucy seal. He was found with fishing line around this neck and would have died without the care provided by Seal Rescue Ireland.
Watching him run down the beach and into the sea was a magical experience and it was actually really emotional.
The following day we headed down to Morriscastle Beach where we were able to see another 2 seals being released.
All of the staff at Seal Rescue Ireland are volunteers giving their time for free to help rehabilitate and educate the public on the seal conservation.
The rescue centre it's self is free so they rely on donations, sponsorships and sales from their shop to fund all of the amazing work that they do.

Big Courtown Seal Release
On Sunday 20th May we said farewell to 7 of our rehabilitated grey and common seals: Frodo, Panoramix, Yvaine, Eleven, Haggis, Tikka and Pigwidgeon.
We were blessed with a beautiful day, a supportive crowd, and the most gorgeous display from the seals once they were released as they frolicked together in the waves.
Good luck pups!

Seal Rescue Ireland Introduction Video
A quick video of a run down of everything we do at Seal Rescue Ireland.
Seal Rescue Ireland is a charity based in Courtown, Co. Wexford. We admit seals into our care that need it from all around the Irish coast, rehabilitate them back to health and release them back into their natural habitat.

Our day at Seal Rescue Ireland
For the Community Feature in the October issue of Irish Country Magazine, our team visited Seal Rescue Ireland in Courtown, Co Wexford. The rehabilitation centre for orphaned baby seals is volunteer run and they rescue seals from coasts nationwide. This video is a snapshot of what goes on at the centre, which was full of common seals when we visited.

Five Seals Released - 28th May 2016
5 of our beautiful rehabilitated seal pups were released back into the ocean on 28th May 2016 in Courtown. 4 grey seals - Yondu, Gamora, Archangel and Rey, and our last common seal Black panther.
We were blessed with beautiful weather and a massive crowd who came along for all our education activities and to help us bid farewell to the beautiful seals.
After months in rehab after being rescued as wee babies sick and injured, and unfortunately being held up even longer from contracting the seal pox, the pups were finally fit and healthy and wasted no time in bouncing down to the water and swimming away back to the wild where they belong.
Good luck out there guys!!! :)

Seal Rescue Ireland's Revegetation Project 1080p
During the winter of 2018/19 Seal Rescue Ireland invited the Courtown/Gorey community to help us replant Courtown Woods.
Due to the impacts of heavy agricultural land use, sediment and pollutants are constantly washed down the River Owenavaragh which accumulate, in Courtown Harbour and are released into the Irish Sea.
Not only does this have HUGE impacts on the local environment, disrupting fisheries and agriculture it also has devastating effects on biodiversity, fresh water ecology and the marine environmnet. Heavy machinery was used to damn the River Owenavaragh as the Harbour was dredged to removed sediment. During this process the large machiery trampled and destroyed a large area of the forest, which is now subject to massive erosion.
Seal Rescue Ireland is committed to wholistic, proactive conservation. We use case studies from seals in our care as ambassadors for a healthy ocean, highlighting major threats to all marine life.
Seal Rescue Ireland, information
If you are out on beaches, keep an eye out for seal pups in distress. Stormy weather and rough seas, human activity by means of boat traffic, as well as people and dogs on beaches can sometimes frighten away nursing mothers and inadvertently lead to pups being injured or orphaned.
Remember:
Do not put the seal in the water. (Injured, sick & newborn pups are on land for a reason)
Do not disturb them – observe from a distance.
Do not touch pups (these animals can bite, and human interference may lead to mothers abandoning otherwise healthy pups)
Keep dogs and children away.
Contact us for advice! If the pup is on its own with no mum in sight; obviously injured; or if unsure please ring Seal Rescue Ireland on 087 1955 393.
