Seals by Sea Tours Portland by Grasshopper Travel
Seals by Sea Tours is a family owned and operated venture founded by, and still currently run by Jo Austin and his family. Seals by Sea Tours is the only mainland breeding colony of seals in Australia, home to over 2000 Australian and Long Nosed Fur Seals and is without a doubt one of the most popular natural attractions in the South West. Operating for over 19 years Seals by Sea Tours is an extremely popular, fun, adventurous and educational experience suitable for all ages. Our seal tour begins with a short walk along the beautiful Great South West Walk, to a one-of-a-kind tin shed where our tour boats await. An exhilarating three-minute-journey across the sea follows, delivering visitors to the striking seal colony, abundant in playful Australian and New Zealand fur seals. Along with the hundreds of seals, passengers are guaranteed to see many other forms of wildlife that are frequently sited on the tour. Dolphins, blue whales, killer whales, penguins and many kinds of fish are regularly spotted. During the 45 minute cruise you will watch the seals play all around you, showing off to the sound of clicking cameras and getting up to antics that will delight both the young and young at heart.

Seals by Sea
Seals by Sea tour in Bridgewater near Portland. Taken in January 2020, just our family was board the boat that took us for a trip to the point and back via a lot of seals and caves.
We learnt a lot, saw a lot, and had a great time together.
The wind was a bit windy, and I wouldn’t want to do this trip if it was much more windy. We had two sea sick people on the boat, however they were fine on this trip. The driver was very experienced and looked after us and the boat very well. He was a lot of fun and usually has people from all over the world doing this trip. His Australian humour was fantastic.
We decided to go on a seal boat ride from Cape Bridgewater, just 15min away from Portland. Here they have the largest mainland group of seals in Australia. There would be more at Kangaroo Island and Philip Island, but yes this is mainland, and the tour was a lot more affordable also. The seas were a bit rough, but they claimed it was only going to get worse in the next few days. With two sea sick people in our family of four, we decided to risk it and do it. We had heard very good things about this tour, and were very surprised to hear there was room in the last voyage at the end of the day. We had the whole boat to ourselves. Oh – we had the driver also.
Our driver was a very compliment boat driver and knew his stuff. We went up over some big waves and we all enjoyed it very much. We saw some very young pup seals that sounded just like sheep. The boat went through some very tall waves, up in the air and crashed down hard. At one stage we noticed there was almost a foot of water in the boat, even the captain of our boat said “What’s all this water in here? I thought it was supposed to stay outside the boat.”
At one point he drove the boat into a large cave. Right inside the cave we could see seals lying around enjoying themselves. It was like we were on a seal resort, some were sleeping, some were splashing around having fun, others were looking after their young pups.
While there are about 850 seals at this point, there were two types of seals here, the Australian long nose seals, and the New Zealand Fur seal. They kept to themselves in different parts also.
The ride back was just as fun as the ride getting to the point. Surfing the waves in a small boat was such good fun.

MV Portland Raid Paddy Crumlin Speaks
Five crew members aboard Alcoa ship the MV Portland were woken at 1am by 30 security guards, handed their passports and forcibly removed from the vessel.
The MV Portland is en route to Singapore, being sailed by a foreign crew, following a 60-day dispute with Alcoa, triggered when the American–based miner sacked the 40 Australian workers.
The company is trying to circumvent Australia’s cabotage laws and shift to foreign vessels, many of them Flags of Convenience (FOC’s) using exploited workers on as little as $2-an-hr.
MUA National Secretary Paddy Crumlin said there were many unanswered questions about the legitimacy of Alcoa’s heavy-handed approach in forcibly removing workers in the middle of the night.
“Questions need to be asked about the role of Alcoa and the Australian Government in this,” Mr Crumlin said.
“How did the foreign crew gain permission to enter and then sail the vessel? Where are the crew from? What security checks do they have? What visa are they on?
“Has Australia learnt nothing since the infamous waterfront dispute in 1998? When did it suddenly become ok to again send in security guards in the dead of night to forcibly remove a workforce? This sort of thing shouldn’t happen to anyone in their workplace.
Alcoa has been allowed to utilise a foreign vessel, with a foreign crew after the Turnbull Government granted the company a temporary licence on the exclusively domestic route, which moves cargo between Western Australia and the smelter in Portland.
The MV Portland has plied that route for 27 years. Temporary licences are intended for for predominantly foreign trading ships that call into more than one Australian port for a temporary period.
“Australia currently has cabotage laws which state that ships trading through domestic ports are to be Australian flagged and crewed,” Mr Crumlin said.
“The Australian Senate has blocked the Turnbull Government’s deregulation agenda with the Government’s own figures saying this would result in more than 1,000 direct job losses.
“The Turnbull Government should never have issued this temporary licence to Alcoa and they should cancel it immediately.
“Australians have a right to work jobs in their own country and to be treated with respect by an employer profiting off the minerals that belong to the Australian people.
