Searles Castle - Windham, New Hampshire (Drone Lady)
Edward Searles was born on July 4, 1841. He was an interior and architectural designer, but his vast wealth he inherited from his wife Mary Francis (Sherwood) Hopkins, more than 20 years his senior, who he married in 1887. The assets of Mary Hopkins included 25% ownership of the Central Pacific Railroad, a large amount of real estate holdings in San Francisco, New York and Great Barrington and $30 million, all of which Edward inherited when Mary died in 1891. Edward spent the remaining 30 years of his life devoted to pursuing his love of architecture during which he financed many structures in New England in collaboration with architect Henry Vaughn. Edward Searles traced his ancestry to the Oxfordshire Harcourt family in England, so the castle was originally called Stanton Harcourt Castle since the design was based on the Stanton-Harcourt manor which once stood in Oxfordshire County, England. Built from 1905 to 1915.

Windham, New Hampshire Community Video Tour
- Recently named one of America's top 50 small towns by Money Magazine, The town of Windham was originally a Parish of Londonderry until it was incorporated in 1742. Early settlers were farmers and millworkers and worked hard to create their quiet rural lifestyle. Historic landmarks include the original Town Center, the Searles School and Searles Castle. The cozy feel of the town's surroundings evoke community and simplicity.
Windham has direct access to I-93 and is just 20 miles to Manchester, NH and 38 miles to Boston, Massachusetts, making it a popular commuting town for those who work in Boston. The landscape of Windham consists of suburban subdivisions, rural open spaces and large areas of undeveloped land.
Searles Castle is an authentic English Tudor nestled in the woods, high atop a 175 acre estate. The 20 room castle was built under the direction of Edward F. Searles, an interior decorator and antique collector, and completed in 1915. It is currently a popular event and wedding venue.
Windham offers a variety of recreational resources including the town Beach at the 302 acre Cobbett's Pond, a public golf course at the Windham Country Club, municipal parks such as Griffin Park, with it's 3 baseball fields, soccer field, tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds and walking paths.
The Windham Rail Trail occupies a scenic stretch in Windham, which, together with the Derry Rail Trail offers 8 miles of paved walking and biking trails passing farm pastures, orchards, ponds and marshes.
In addition to large supermarket and pharmacy chains, several small shopping areas offer an abundance of local stores and dining options. The nearby Mall at Rockingham Park in Salem offers over 150 stores with tax free shopping.
The Windham School District serves students in four schools for grades K-12 and the town's first high school opened in 2010.
Windham is considered to be a bedroom community and consistently maintains its rural, open character with large areas of open space and conservation land. The town has been successful in providing an exceptional quality of life and at the same time keeping taxes low. Housing options range from condominiums to waterfront properties to farms to gated communities to luxury homes priced in the millions.
