Lecture on The History of Trona and Searles Valley
Tis lecture was given in the Coso Room of the Maturango Museum on Wednesday, December 9,th. The Museum will hosted a lecture and book-signing on the history of Trona. The lecturers will were James Fairchild and Russell Kaldenberg, and included an introduction to their new book. Trona was once the most populous community in the Upper Mojave Desert. Originally explored by the Death Valley 49ers in 1850, Searles Valley was formed by remnants of the Owens River Lakes. The small towns of Borosolvay, Magnesium, Burnham, and Slaterange City prospered for a period before fading. Homewood Canyon, Westend, Argus, Pioneer Point, and Trona continue to provide pleasant housing for Searles Valley residents. The valley is dominated by mining history, and Searles Valley Minerals still produces products for worldwide markets. Wyatt Earp played cards and gambled at Poeville and was arrested in 1910 in Searles Valley for claim jumping. In 1913, Stafford Wallace Austin helped create the planned town of Trona. Amelia Earhart’s husband, George Putnam, died at the Trona Hospital in 1950. Around Trona and Searles Valley, the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series, is by James L. Fairchild and Russell L. Kaldenberg. It was released in conjunction with The Searles Valley Historical Society. The book includes 224 vintage images, many of which have never been published, and copies will be available for sale and signing. Coauthor James L. Fairchild has lived in Trona since 1963 and has investigated the history of mining methods on Searles Lake for 15 years. Russell L. Kaldenberg is former State Archaeologist for the BLM, and has worked extensively throughout the West on cultural resource projects and oral histories.

Searles Lake is an endorheic dry lake in the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County, California, with the mining community, Trona on its western shore.
The evaporite basin is approximately 19 km (12 mi) long and 13 km (8.1 mi) at its widest point, yielding 1.7 million tons annually of
industrial minerals within the basin to the Searles Valley Minerals mining operations.
Searles Lake is bounded by the Argus and Slate Mountains.

Visiting Trona, California and the Searles Dry Lake Field Trips and Gem-O-Rama.
Trona Gem-O-Rama 2013
Come down to Trona, California just south of Death Valley for a great big gem and mineral event on Searles dry lake bed. The Searles Lake Gem and Mineral Society puts on the event each year and it's a big old party in the desert. There are a variety of massive gems just under the surface of the lake bed and once a year the public is allowed to dig around and keep whatever they find. There are three events:
Mud pile - A pile of mud and crystals you can dig through. Messy as hell but great stuff in there.
Blow hole - US Navy blows a hole in the lake bed with explosives and the mining company pumps air into the hole to blast out all the gems.
Pink Halite Brine Pools - Rare pink crystals grow just under the surface of the salty brine pools on the lake bed. You have to smash them off the shelves with hammers but they are worth the trouble.
I and my friends camped out at the Trona Pinnacles just south of the lake and attended all three events. The official event page can be found here:

Eerie & Spooky Places: Trona Pinnacles (Eastern California)
EERIE & SPOOKY PLACES: “TRONA PINNACLES” (Eastern California)
In the South end of Panamint Valley in Eastern California you can find one of the most unique formation of American Southwest. Just short distance from industrial town Trona is site of Trona Pinnacles - eerie and even little spooky rock formation which was used in many mainly sci-fi movies as place from another world. That’s the feeling you have once you arrive there.
If you are planning to visit Death Valley it is definitely worth of driving 150 km (each way) to see this wander (even it must not be in temperature of 42 C as this movie was shot).
However it may appear to you, a visit to the Trona Pinnacles will be a journey into one of the most unusual geologic wonders in the California Desert. This unique landscape consists of more than 500 tufa (calcium carbonate) pinnacles rising from the bed of the Searles Dry Lake basin. These tufa spires, some as high as 140 feet, were formed underwater 10,000 to 100,000 years ago when Searles Lake formed a link in an interconnected chain of Pleistocene lakes stretching from Mono Lake to Death Valley.
A brief drive through Trona, CA
I had the opportunity to drive through Trona, California on May 20, 2010. A little taste of Tijuana, right here in the good old USA. That said, the people I met were quite pleasant.

Exploring the Trona Pinnacles
The Trona Pinnacles are an unusual geological feature in the California Desert National Conservation Area. The unusual landscape consists of more than 500 tufa spires (porous rock formed as a deposit when springs interact with other bodies of water), some as high as 140 feet, rising from the bed of the Searles Lake (dry) basin.
The pinnacles vary in size and shape from short and squat to tall and thin, and are composed primarily of calcium carbonate (tufa). They now sit isolated and slowly crumbling away near the south end of the valley, surrounded by many square miles of flat, dried mud and with stark mountain ranges at either side.
Access to the site is from a BLM dirt road (RM143) that leaves State Highway 178, about 7.7 miles east of the intersection of State Highway 178 and the Trona-Red Mountain Road. The 5 mile long dirt road from State Highway 178 to the Pinnacles is usually accessible to 2-wheel drive vehicles, however, the road may be closed during the winter months after a heavy rain.
The Pinnacles are recognizable in more than a dozen hit movies. Over thirty film projects a year are shot among the tufa pinnacles, including backdrops for car commercials and sci-fi movies and television series such as Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Disney's Dinosaur, The Gate II, Lost in Space, and Planet of the Apes.
