Visiting Rügen Island, Germany
With one full day to explore Ruegen Island, the largest in all of Germany, we had an itinerary full of activities. One of the highlights included renting an e-trabi (Trabant) car of the former GDR (East Germany) era taking it for a spin. The typical engine had been replaced by an electric motor making it a more environmentally friendly ride.

We then visited Göhren where we sampled freshly made German bread with generous amounts of butter and herbs before checking out a couple of local museums featuring traditional farming equipment, horse drawn carriage equipment and kitchenware. Nearby we cooled off at North Beach where hundreds flock to tan and swim.
To visit more of Rügen we traded in our car for train ticket passes. Boarding the Roland Racer, a former steam engine commuter train, we passed scenic towns, forests and farmland.
Hearing about the famed chalky cliffs we headed over to Jasmund National Park to marvel at them in person.
Although we packed a lot into one day of travel we left feeling we barely covered the island. Hopefully we'll have a chance to return again soon to visit more areas.
Visiting Rügen Island, Germany Travel Video Transcript:
So good morning from Germany. It is day four of our big road trip around the country and today we are exploring around Rügen Island.
So we have a very busy itinerary today. We are planning to visit the white chalky cliffs of Jasmund National Park. We're also going to be riding around in an e-Trabi and we're going to be traveling by steam engine train.
So that should be a real adventure and I think we're also going to finish things off with a few visits to museums.
So a fun day ahead. Let's go start exploring.
So we're about to ride on the Roland Racer which is an old fashioned steam engine train.
Though the train was once used as a commuter train for locals these days you're more likely to find visitors enjoying the scenic route.
The tracks run past farms, villages and stretches of forest. It is an absolutely spectacular ride.
So we have now arrived at a place called Königsstuhl at Jasmund National Park. And this is a world heritage UNESCO site and it is really well known for its white chalky cliffs. I'm sure most of you have seen the white cliffs of Dover. Well, Germany has something just like it.
So this is our sweet ride for the day. We're going to be driving an e Trabi around the island. So this is an old fashioned trabant. It would have been the car that they drove in East Germany the former GDR. And they've put in an electric motor in it so now it is good for the environment and we're going to be cruising. It is nice and colorful so I think we're going to make quite the impression on the roads.
So we are still visiting the town of Göhren but right now we are down at the beach here at the promenade. So this area is called North Beach and it is beautiful for strolling, maybe doing a bit of sunbathing and we have some great weather today so a lot of people are out just enjoying the sun.
We've got a slice of the local bread here. It has just been freshly made and if you look down you can see that it has got a generous portion of butter and also herbs. So let's try this out. It is amazing. So fresh. Such a generous amount of butter. That's probably about three times as much butter as I would normally put on my bread but it tastes really good.
We then visited a few local museums in Göhren which showcased life as it was a few centuries back. Their collection included a mixture of farming equipment, horse drawn carriages and furniture that would have found in local households.
That was a really busy day. We've just arrived back home. We're going to rest up because tomorrow we're off to a new destination.
This is part of our Travel in Germany series. We're making a series of videos showcasing German culture, German arts, German foods, German religion, German cuisine and German people.

When the Berlin Wall came down 25 years ago, Rügen became the largest of the unified Germany ’s 51 islands. Its most famous landmarks are its chalk cliffs, which rise up steeply from the horizon. The island is also famed for the classical architecture of its luxurious coastal resorts and the sandy beaches that stretch for miles and miles.

- exclusive seaside resort Binz
The seaside resort of Binz is located on the east coast of the island in the Baltic sea. It is characterized by the many mansions, dating to the turn of the century date (19-20 cent.) (Spa architecture). The villas are as white as the beach. You feel transported to another time. From this period dates the wonderful Kurhaus. You can feel there, the tradition of '20s chic.

This video is about Weekend Getaway Idea | Hamburg | Rügen Island | Part 2 | Travel Germany | Roamer Realm
Hello Friends! This video is the second of the two part sightseeing journey.
If you saw the first part of the video, you already know that I am now at the Rugen island, and despite the relatively difficult cycling experience, I managed to see the chalk mountains and explore the city of Sassnitz before the sunset. After some well deserved overnight rest at Sagard, it's time to start day 2 of this weekend trip and head over to another small town of this coastal pearl called Binz. So, let's go!
It was a random selection, but the hotel turned out to be a good one and the breakfast was quite filling - just what I needed before hitting the road!
There are 2 routes to reach Binz, and, for obvious reasons, I picked the one with more nature around it.
Just like the route from Chalk mountains to Sassnitz, this one was mostly downhill and, to be honest, 18 Kms didn't feel that 'long'.
Before I knew, the beautiful white sand beach at Binz were already in sight.
In case you're wondering, the small boxes that you see, these are called beach baskets, and are available for rent in case you're planning to spend the day at the beach itself. These are particularly good if you want shade from the sun or protection from the wind.
The street leading to the town center runs right alongside the beach, parallel to it, and is a walking street. Note that walk with your bicycle alongside, but riding is not allowed.
Many of the sea facing high end hotels are beautifully lined up on this street along with restaurants and bars.
In mood to shop? No problems because a host of these small shops selling clothes, souvenirs, beach items etc is readily available.
The walking street branch off towards the main beach at several points, it's more for the convenience of beach access.
Since the view was similar, I decided to head towards the town center to explore further.
The projection of the pier onto the sea towards the end of the beach is the actual town center and that's where I'm headed.
We need to understand that Binz is actually a very small beach resort town. So, is it like one of those dreamy beach locations you would see in movies? Well, I would say not to have such high expectations. In terms of activities, there is not much to do here. Visiting for a day or two, spending time relaxing at the beach and enjoying some great sea food would be the things to do.
The train station is just a kilometer away from the town center and you need to change once if you're taking a long distance train. After sundown I took a train back to Hamburg thus ending my cycling trip. It was a new experience for me exploring on a cycling and even clocking a 100 Kms at that!
I'll conclude this video on that note. If you enjoyed it, give it a thumbs up and please click subscribe to my Youtube channel, trust me, it makes a lot of difference.
As always, thanks for watching, keep exploring and I'll see you in the next one!

Germany: Rügen - The Town of Putbus
Putbus is a town on the southeastern coast of the island of Rügen, in the county of Vorpommern-Rügen in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, close to the Baltic Sea. The town is a significant tourist destination with numerous seaside resorts. It is the oldest resort on the island and has been formally recognised by the state as a resort town since 1997.
Putbus was founded in 1810 by Prince Wilhelm Malte zu Putbus as his town of residence and had it built in the Classicist style, so that the town formed a harmonious union with the park and palace (Schloss). The nickname of the place as the White Town (Weiße Stadt) comes from its white-painted houses, but it is also referred to as Rosenstadt (Rose Town) due to the many rose bushes in front of individual buildings. The name Putbus is derived from the Slavic epod boz and means behind the elder bush.
The Putbus Circus: classicist buildings ring this circular roundabout, known as the Circus, on which all the local roads converge. A clearly divided area of parkland fills the inner ring of the square, whose centre point is marked by a tall obelisk. The Putbus Circus is the last uniformly designed circus in Germany, which Prince Wilhelm Malte I of Putbus laid out from 1828, at the same time as founding the Pedagogium, based on the Circus in the English bathing resort of Bath (Roman: Aquae Sulis), and French gardens. In 1845 he had it developed in the period to 1845 with neo-classical houses. All the buildings that were erected in the time of Prince Malte I are still there, only their use has changed.
