Cruising Alaska Ketchikan - Totem Bight Park

Hi Cruisers, in this short video (really just a few stills and clips) we take a look at Ketchikan and Totem Bight State Park.

If you’re cruising to Alaska, chances are, you’ll be stopping in Ketchikan. Situated at the southernmost entrance to Alaska’s inside passage, there’s so much to do and see here…from walking and shopping downtown to ziplining, checking out the salmon ladder, or catching a floatplane to Misty Fjords National Monument.

Our visit to Ketchikan took us to Totem Bight State Historical park, a gorgeous seaside 33 acre park showcasing 14 totem poles and a replica of a community house, or clanhouse.

We chose a ship tour, which started with a brief bus ride to the park. After a short nature walk, we heard stories about many of the poles- most of them quite tragic, and learned about the way the Klingit clans are divided into matrilineal groups.

A clanhouse of this size could have housed 30-50 people, with each family being allotted its own space around a central fireplace. Little ones will enjoy entering the house through the tiny entrance.

Speaking of kids, there are sticks to find and rocks to throw at the nearby scenic beach.

Chilkoot Lake Wildlife Kayak Tour - Haines, Alaska

Arrive in Haines where you will meet your wilderness guide and set out on a seaside drive to Chilkoot Lake State Park. This park has many highlights including Tlingit Indian cultural sites, a salmon-filled river flowing into the sea, and a turquoise lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

Once you arrive at Chilkoot Lake State Park, take in the scenery as you board your two-person sea kayaks. Your expert guide will show you the basics of paddling. Outfitted with the proper gear, you will soon be gliding silently along the shores of the lake. This pristine lake is uncrowded, and the scenery is spectacular. Huge waterfalls spill off of the cliffs surrounding the lake, lush green forests crowd the shoreline, and wildlife abounds. Pause at the base of one of these waterfalls, where your guide will reveal the secret workings of the rainforest.

Beginning in July, sockeye salmon spawn in one of the clear streams that feed into the lake. Eagles and bears are often attracted to this spot, and you will be able to view all the activity from your kayak. Total time on the lake is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.

Paddle back to shore and enjoy a box lunch before driving back to Haines. Once back in Haines, board the high-speed catamaran for your journey back to Skagway. Return to your ship filled with memories and photographs from an unforgettable adventure.

March 24, 2017 Spring Whale Watching at the Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center (Oregon)

Gray whales are traveling north on their way to their summer grounds off the Alaska coastline. Watch our livestream as we watch for the tell-tale blow, the spray of ocean water that says a whale is here! If we're lucky, we may see a whale breach as it launches as much as 3/4 of its body out of the water in a spectacular show of power and grace.

It's one of the best cruise ships in the world, and in this video I explain exactly why I feel that way.

We had a fantastic 15-day cruise on the Norwegian Bliss as Norwegian Cruise Line brought her through the Panama Canal for the very first time.

In the video, I show you all the things I loved about the ship... from the gigantic observation lounge with spectacular views ahead of the ship... to the amazing go-kart racetrack... two of the most fun waterslides at sea... the huge variety of entertainment options... and the fantastic food onboard, not just from the specialty restaurants, but also in the buffet.

I also compare this to another brand new cruise ship, the MSC Seaside... and explain why you'd be so much better off to book a cruise on the Norwegian Bliss instead.

I also let you in on a little bit of the fun that I had sailing not only with my wife on this cruise, but also with one of my sisters.

I give you a look at the food at several of my favorite dining venues onboard: Cagney's steakhouse... Los Lobos, a Mexican restaurant... La Cucina, an Italian restaurant... Q, a Texas-style smokehouse bbq joint... and Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville restaurant.

Finally, there's a glimpse at a portion of the time-lapse video I shot as our ship went through the Panama canal.
