Sea-Life Sculptures Made From Ocean’s Trash
(31 Jul 2018) Huge sculptures of sea-life are dotted about New Orleans' aquarium and zoo, all of them made from plastic trash that washed ashore. There's a great white shark made partly of bottle caps and beach toys and a jellyfish made mostly of cut up water bottles.
We're very excited about the Washed Ashore exhibits, because, two things: One, it's entertainment, because obviously when you look at this, there's so much to look at – and we're going to create some fun games with that – but the second thing that's really most important is, this is all garbage that washed up on the Pacific Coast in one area that they picked up, said Brenda Walkenhorst, director of education projects for the aquarium.
The artwork, part of Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea, is the creation of Angela Haseltine Pozzi, who started making the pieces after seeing plastic heaped by the waves onto the Oregon coast. Pozzi was in Bandon, where her grandparents had lived, mourning her first husband's death.
She wants the scale of her creations to make people realize just how much plastic gets into the world's waterways and from there to the ocean _ and to do something about it.
So, I wanted it to be beautiful from a distance and then horrifying and a real wake-up call when you get up close, Pozzi said.
She has an army of volunteers _ about 10,000 since she started in 2010 _ who help her collect, prepare and assemble the beach trash into art. One of their wash-basins for plastic is a bathtub also found on the beach.
She now has more than 70 pieces in three exhibitions currently traveling the U.S., and has overseas requests. Her work has been displayed at zoos, aquariums and botanical gardens, and she has permanent exhibits at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and a gallery in Bandon.
The Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is currently showing six sculptures, and one is on display at the Audubon Zoo; more pieces will be added to both locations in October. Most are currently on display at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, including a river otter, a seahorse and a clownfish in an anemone.

SUMMARY
=======
Cork (; Irish: Corcaigh, pronounced [ˈkoɾkɪɟ], from corcach, meaning marsh) is a city in south-west Ireland, in the province of Munster, which had a population of 125,657 in 2016. It is the third largest city on the island of Ireland, after Dublin and Belfast, and the second largest in the Republic of Ireland.
The city is situated on the River Lee which splits into two channels at the western end and divides the city centre into islands. They reconverge at the eastern end where the quays and docks along the river banks lead outwards towards Lough Mahon and Cork Harbour, which is one of the largest natural harbours in the world by navigational area.Expanded by Viking invaders around 915, the city's charter was granted by Prince John, as Lord of Ireland, in 1185. Cork city was once fully walled, and the remnants of the old medieval town centre can be found around South and North Main streets.
The city's cognomen of the rebel city originates in its support for the Yorkist cause during the English 15th century Wars of the Roses. Corkonians often refer to the city as the real capital in reference to its role as the centre of forces opposing the Anglo-Irish Treaty during the Irish Civil War.
