THE MASTERS OF THE SKIES
So far, 291 bird species have been established at the Sečovlje salt-pans. And why can we find so many different birds here? The salt-pans constitute a large water body, which the birds use as their roosting site or wintering grounds.
When water bodies began to be cleared due to the ever-increasing urbanisation in Slovene Istria as well as in the Mediterranean in general, the Sečovlje salt-pans began to gain, through years, on their significance as a bird sanctuary. A great role in this respect has also been played by the abandoned salt-making in the southern half of the pans. The salters indeed stopped gathering salt there, but they still maintained the levees, regulated the water level in salt basins and thus conserved the different natural living environments. An important role has also been played by the processes of natural forces, which formed a series of similar but different enough environments, which have been eventually inhabited by birds with different dietary and breeding demands. Seawater, which runs deep into the pans through salt-pan channels, brings to the basins large amounts of food that can be easily reached by birds in the shallow basins of the abandoned part of the pans. These are primarily planktonic organisms, tiny invertebrates, and fry. In springtime the pans, which are a widened boundary between the land and the sea as far as birds are concerned, become an important nest-site for numerous birds.

Slovene Riviera
The Slovene Riviera (Slovene: Slovenska obala) is the coastline of Slovenia, located on the Gulf of Trieste, by the Adriatic Sea. It is part of the Istrian peninsula and is 46.6 km long. The region comprises the towns of Koper and Piran, and the municipality of Izola. It is a seaside tourist destination, with a vibrant multiethnic Slovenian and Italian heritage.
Located in Slovene Istria, the Riviera belongs to the Coastal–Karst Statistical Region and to the historical region of the Slovene Littoral. It is bordered to the north by Italy and to the south by Croatia. The northernmost point is the headland of Debeli Rtič, by the Gulf of Koper; and the southernmost one is the village of Sečovlje, by the Gulf of Piran, located close the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park.
The 14 settlements on the coast, divided by municipality, are:
Ankaran (Italian: Ancarano), Koper (Italian: Capodistria) with Bertoki (Italian: Bertocchi), Izola (Italian: Isola) with Dobrava and Jagodje, Piran (Italian: Pirano) with Fiesa, Lucija, Parecag, Portorož (Italian: Portorose), Seča, Sečovlje, and Strunjan.
The coastline counts the ports of Koper, Izola, Piran, Lucija, and Portorož. Koper railway station is the terminus of the Divača–Koper Railway and Portorož Airport is located near Sečovlje, close to Croatian borders. Main road serving the Riviera is the national road 111, which joins the A1 motorway (to Ljubljana and Maribor) at Koper. (Wikipedia)
Slovenia Piran Salt pans
Salt pans: the cause of flourishing economy and the source of health
The Piran Salt Pans, established in 804, encompassed the salt pans in the area of today’s marina (Lucija, Portorož), the smaller Strunjan Salt Pans, and the larger Sečovlje Salt Pans. The areas of all the preserved salt pans are now landscape parks. At the Strunjan Landscape Park, you will find an incredible cliff towering over the sea, and at the Sečovlje Salt Pans, you can learn about the traditional salt production with guided tours and a visit to the Museum of Salt-Making.
LEPA VIDA THALASSO SPA
The unique outdoor spa centre LEPA VIDA THALASSO SPA was opened in the northern part of the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park.
On the Slovenian coast, we can admire one of the most beautiful natural and cultural jewels of Slovenia -- the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park. Here, the tradition of salt production has existed in harmony with man and nature for hundreds of years ever since the middle ages and has created and preserved a unique saline landscape. At THE LEPA VIDA THALASSO SPA guests are offered a special experience of traditional thalassotherapy in a unique natural environment amidst the salt pans using natural products, produced in the Sečovlje Salina Landscape Park. Salt-pan mud and brine are the most important factors of thalassotherapy, which uses the beneficial effects of the sea products, the sea shore and the climate for boosting the immune system and improving overall health.
