Santorini one day tour from Crete!
Explore the unique charm of Santorini in one day! Our multilingual guides will reveal to you the secrets of Santorini.
The Labyrinth of Crete
The Labyrinth of Crete is situated circa 3 km northeast from the archaeological site of Gortys at central Crete. It is an underground quarry in marly limestone, excavated probably during the Roman Period. It was first described and mapped in the 18th and 19th centuries. More detailed descriptions have been published recently. The cave comprises 2.5 km of corridors, leading to or connecting small and larger rooms covering almost an area of one hectare. The Labyrinth of Gortys is connected to Greek Mythology and more especially to Theseus and Minotaurus, at least from the 9th century A.D.. According to many Travellers' reports and 16th century maps, the Labyrinth of Gortys was one of the first and most significant Cretan attractions, at least from the beginning of the 15th century. Visits were relatively organized, with Greek guides leading the visitors inside to the cave. These guided tours were carried on until at least the Second World War.
From the beginning of the 15th century, many Travelers to Crete visited the Labyrinth, and stressed the existence of the numerous inscriptions they were shown on the cave's walls. The first was that of Christophoro Buondelmonti who visited Labyrinth on 1415. The inscriptions made by the visitors of the famous cave are found mostly on the walls of the rooms -especially the more distant ones- but also on the walls of the corridors and the rubble-stone interior walls.
In 1999 the Department of Crete of the Hellenic Speleological Society started a project for the inventory of the inscriptions found in the so-called Labyrinth of Gortys. More than 2,000 inscriptions have been inventoried so far.
Visiting Knosis Palace in Crete | Knosis Greece
The legend of the minotaur in the labyrinth came from a place called Knosis which was the palace of King Minos. I take a local city bus out to this site and wander about the ruins to learn more about the myth and story of the minotaur and labyrinth.

A Tour of the Ancient Greek Ruins of Knossos, Crete
After a good lunch at Mykonos island, Greece
The most memorable part of this local guide, besides the good and fresh seafood at this mom-and-pop restaurant was that the guide made a blunder. At the ferry point, she waved an ASA banner to meet the ASA group tour.
Are you sure you are not from ASA? she asked our tour manager repeatedly as the only Singaporean tour group was from EU Holidays. Everybody had disembarked from the ferry and the competitor was nowhere to be found. As to how the administrative blunder was made, it was a mystery to me. Blunders sometimes make travel much more alive and interesting as in the case of a new coach driver using a car GPS system, instead of a coach GPS system, in the South of France packaged travelj. This was narrated to me by a Malaysian tour manager Dave Cheong I had met.
The coach went up the mountain road meant for cars and had to go to the top and navigate down again carefully and safely.
The local tour guide was very sporting and posed for photography for me who was looking at my camera's LCD screen to make a video. But this was a video and all laughed.
Much joy and laughter with this adult group of 35 Singaporean and Malaysian tourists from Singapore in May 2014. The youngest was a young adult lady from her University break and had accompanied her parents on this tour. Many young adults may not want to go on tours with their parents since it would be boring with oldies, forgetting once that their parents bore the burden of bringing them on holidays when they were dependents and much younger..
This is CHANIA, CRETE. ???????? Is it the Best city in Greece? What to do in Crete.
We spent a day exploring the beautiful Cretan city of Chania! It can be found on the north west side of the island of Crete (the largest Greek island).
We begin the day at Nea Chora beach, which is right in town. Here you’ll find lots of restaurants and bars along with beach chairs and umbrellas that you can rent for about 5 Euros.
Next we explore the old Venetian city walls which surround the old city. After walk up on the walls we come down to check out the Old Venetian port as well as the lighthouse, which happens to be one of the oldest in the world.
Lastly we explore the cute streets of the old city and stop to try to Cretan pies filled with spinach and mizithra cheese as well as some Greek coffee.

Crete:It is the largest of the Greek islands and is in the Mediterranean Sea between the Sea of Crete and the Libyan Sea, south of the Peloponnese. Crete is approximately 260 km long and 60 km wide. Crete consists of four prefectures: Chania, Rethimno, Heraklion and Lasithi. If there was a beauty contest for Greek islands, Crete would surely be among the favorites. Indeed, some say there is no place on earth like Crete. This view is strongly supported by those fortunate enough to have visited the island. Crete, with a population of approximately 650,000, is not just sun, sea and sand; it is a quite distinct place full of vitality, warmth, hospitality, culture and of course an excellent infrastructure. Crete is well known for its seas and beaches but it has a very contrasting landscape.
Nea Chora Beach: It means new town, and it was the first modern part of Chania outside the venetian fortification wall. New Chora has a fishing harbour and a great beach to enjoy. You will find plenty of traditional cafes and sea food restaurants around the place. It is a great alternative to the old town because you have a beach at your doorstep, great parking place, and some of the best fish restaurants in the area.
Chania (also spelled: Haniá)is the capital city, a place where different civilizations have flourished throughout the centuries. Wandering around the Old Town’s maze-like alleys with the beautiful Venetian mansions, the fountains and the elaborate churches will help you discover well-preserved historical monuments.
