Philip Caveny: Knysna Forest History
Phillip Caveney of the Knysna Historical Society talks about some of the stops on the Garden Route National Park’s self-drive tour: Rooted in Time

Garden Route National Park -
Media release: 29 June 2016 - Navigating South Africa’s largest individual forests
The Knysna forests managed by the South African National Parks as part of its Garden Route National Park (GRNP) make up around 42,000 hectares of land across the coastal stretch from George to Tsitsikamma in the East. The forests which were formerly managed by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry include Farleigh, Diepwalle and Tsitsikamma are now managed under the GRNP for conservation. The forests were exploited prior to 1939 when the Government decided to close them to the woodcutters’ system. Between 1940 and 1964 the Government focused largely on plantations.
With an estimated 400 elephants walking the Knysna forest in 1876, over 280 species of birds and a population of woodcutters living in the Forest, how much can we learn from recorded and oral history?
The GRNP team worked closely with the Knysna Historical Society and other stakeholders to establish a historical route in one of SA’s largest individual forests. Through a self-drive route launched today (the 29th June 2016), visitors to the Garden Route can now drive to 10 marked historically significant locations in the Knysna forest. The route comes with a map of the 10 areas dubbed ‘rooted in time’. There are explicit signs at all 10 places detailing historical accounts at each stop.
The Knysna Historical Society’s Phillip Caveney, introduced various key players and events in recorded colonial history as: 1864-1868 Thomas Bain and the Uniondale Road, 1882 and the Deep Walls Forest, Sawmills at Deep Walls, James Henry Templeman, the Building of the Stone Cottage at Deep Walls, the Early occupants of the stone cottage, Oudebrandpad and the naming of the King Edward VII Tree and the South Western Railway.
Area Manager for Knysna, Johan de Klerk says this is the first of many products to be launched in Knysna. The GRNP team is planning to facilitate a workshop with various stakeholders including the Knysna Historical Society, the George Historical Society, the National Heritage Council (NHC), the National Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA), tertiary institutions and individual researchers to include African history in existing recorded work. ‘This is a big project to include input from various role players.’
This is the first leg of a bigger route to be launched in the GRNP to run from Wilderness to Knysna to Tsitsikamma. SANParks Head of Socio-economic development, Paul Daphne, says the organization prioritizes historical/ cultural assets because history accounts for happenings/ events in the past to be able to understand the future.
‘What is the understanding about the culture at the time? What were the values of the time? What can be deduced from evidence of machinery now protected as assets by SANParks? Most importantly: What lessons have emerged from back in time? Are the forests and its people able to coexist better today than they did back then?’
George To Knysna By 7 Passes - A Garden Route Road Trip Via The Back Roads
The N2 National Road between #George and #Knysna in the South Africa Garden Route is a pretty scenic one. But if you want really spectacular scenery with mountain passes, historic bridges, dairy farms, mountains, and scenery that wouldn't be out of place in parts of Europe, this is for you. It's around 20 Km longer than the N2 National Road, and has several gravel stretches, but it's totally doable with an ordinary sedan car, a #4x4 isn't a necessity. There are some really good restaurants and tea rooms along the way and did I mention the scenery?

We're Chris and Birgit from Kangela Travels; currently living in the beautiful Garden Route of South Africa (but prone to hit the road to somewhere else at any time). Our passion is to travel, and we’ve been fortunate enough to have done our share of exploring the world, camera in hand. We're travel fanatics, keen anglers, photographers and occasional travel bloggers, with a particular weakness for road trips, the great open spaces of Africa, tropical Islands and Europe’s culture and history. But actually, we're fans of anywhere that we haven’t yet been, wherever that might be.

Hooked on Hiking ????Tierkop - Garden Route, South Africa
A challenging 12/14 km hike but oh so worth it for the views and fynbos.
From the town of George, take the Seven Passes Road to Nelson Mandela University Campus.
At the last student house you can park your vehicle.
From there, its upwards all the way.
Don't choose a very hot day to hike Tierkop. We went when it was 23 deg C (high humidity factor though) and encountered quite a lot of mist which meant fewer views but the ones we did encounter, were spectacular.
On a clear day you can see the town of George and the Garden Route Dam below. On the other side, the Wilderness.
There is a pretty dangerous pathway where concentration is needed to keep one foot in front of the other, but this is the most picturesque. A slip here would mean falling down an unforgiving cliff to almost certain death.
It was here I took the video through the mists of Tierkop and stopped the music on this movie clip to enable you to hear the breathtaking sounds of the forests which followed us all the way.
Enjoy your hiking experience and the break on the top at the hut before heading down (a breeze ????)

A 4m high and 6m long 'Spirit of the Knysna Forest' emerged onto the streets of Cape Town during the fourth annual Cape Town Carnival, held on 16 March 2013. Puppeteered by 4 community members from the Belgravia group, steered by 6 brave Carnival volunteers and accompanied by the beautiful sounds of a steel kettle drum band, Loxi the Knysna elephant trumpeted, flapped and glided her way proudly down the Fanwalk.

EP15 |???? Knysna fires, paddling to Whiskey Creek Cabin and other adventures | ⛵Sailing Pluto
Adventuring up a river to a cabin for a weekend, but mid-adventure the local fires make us change our plans. We also go on more expeditions (rock climbing, swimming and hiking) around the area now that we have our landrover with us.
Join as we paddle up a river, hike down a wild coastline and climb in a canyon, all only a short drive from Knysna.
The Whiskey Creek Cabin is a must do if you are in the area - you can book through Cape Nature on their website. It is a basic cabin with cutlery and crockery, mattresses and hot water on a warm day.
Climbing at the Crags:
We are pretty spoiled, having come from Cape Town. It is okay’ish. A real scramble to get too. More here:
Robberg is a must-see and there are plenty short and well marked hikes. We are staying there in a few weeks, but in this video, we wanted to go a little off the beaten track and followed the fishers’ trail that headed away from the national park gate (with permission from National Park)

We are planning to live and explore the Indian Ocean from our sailboat. We did a refit of a TOSCA 36 and left Cape Town in October 2018. A large part of sailing is learning how to be adaptable and change plans - our biggest being our failed engine as we were making our way from Knysna to Port Elizabeth. Follow along as we figure out how to live with less.
World Animals ~ African Wildlife Full Documentary
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a conservation area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera within the area, is recognized by one private organization as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. The conservation area is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, an arm of the Tanzanian government, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of the Arusha Region. It has been reported in 2009 that the government authority has proposed a reduction of the population of the conservation area from 65,000 to 25,000. There are plans being considered for 14 more luxury tourist hotels, so people can access the unparalleled beauty of one of the world's most unchanged wildlife sanctuaries, however, the people who own the land have had few benefits from tourism. None of the senior level positions in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is yet held by a member of the local Maasai pastoralists.
The lion (Panthera leo) is one of the five big cats in the genus Panthera and a member of the family Felidae. The commonly used term African lion collectively denotes the several subspecies found in Africa. With some males exceeding 250 kg (550 lb) in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Wild lions currently exist in sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia (where an endangered remnant population resides in Gir Forest National Park in India) while other types of lions have disappeared from North Africa and Southwest Asia in historic times. Until the late Pleistocene, about 10,000 years ago, the lion was the most widespread large land mammal after humans. They were found in most of Africa, across Eurasia from western Europe to India, and in the Americas from the Yukon to Peru. The lion is a vulnerable species, having seen a major population decline in its African range of 30–50% per two decades during the second half of the 20th century. Lion populations are untenable outside designated reserves and national parks. Although the cause of the decline is not fully understood, habitat loss and conflicts with humans are currently the greatest causes of concern. Within Africa, the West African lion population is particularly endangered.
