Secrets of the underground in Odessa, Ukraine
Secrets of the underground in Odessa, Ukraine
Odessa is famous not only for Derebasivska Street, Sea port or Potemkinska Stairs, but also for its catacombs – system of underground ways or coridors, which are connected between each other.
The aim of our trip to Odessa was to visit one of such catacombs, to learn more about its history.
Museum “Secrets of the underground Odessa” helped us to implement this plan.
We had an underground excursion there. Museum is located on the Moldavanka district of Odessa.
After the organisers of the excursion had given us helmets and flashlights, we started to descend into the catacombs. Excursion lasted for about 3 hours.
It is neccessary to admit that the system of catacombs is very complicated: there are a lot of routes and exits.
So you should always follow your guide, otherwise you can easily get lost.
There were 10 persons in our group.
Darkness is everywhere, light comes only from our flashlights. There are different signs and paintings on the walls.
You will definetely feel here like a hero from Ukrainian film ” Shtolnia”.
The deeper you go into the catacombs, the more water appears on the ground (there are even small underground lakes, which are extremeltly cold).
Initially the catacombs were digged in order to get stones for house building.
Later the catacombs were considered to use in the cases of natural catastrophes or technical damages.
The catacombs also were used by partisans (hide from the enemies), slave traders (they kidnapped beautiful women and hide them in catacombs, after that led them by the underground corridors to the sea, where there were a boat which went to Turkey).
Archeological works are held here now.
That’s why you can see ancient weapons, which were used for getting stone; guns of partisans and even bones of mammoth, which are about millions year old.
The catacombs are also used as locations for film broadcasting.
The total length of catacombs in Odessa and its suburbs is about 2500 km. These are the longest catacombs in the world.
We recommend this excursion to people, who like unordinarity, mistery and partly extreme.

Odessa Underground Tour
Exploring the museum of catacombs in Odesa, Ukraine
Exploring the WILD CATACOMBS OF ODESSA | Longest tunnel system in the world
A travel to Odessa, Ukraine to chill out and rejuvenate from Medical school stress led to me exploring the Odessa catacombs as per my ever-growing wanderlust. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Built in the 19th century, the catacombs are a labyrinth-like network of tunnels located under the City of Odessa. The approximate topography of the Odessa underground labyrinth is unknown and so, the catacombs have not been fully mapped. It is one of the world’s largest labyrinth running up to 2,500 kilometers. How cool, right?!
Anyway, only a part of the catacombs is open to the public within the “Museum of Partisan Glory.” As of 2012, there are more than 1000 known entrances to the tunnels. Other caves attract the extremists- tourists who still explore despite the dangers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Do journey with me on this Vlog as I explore the Odessa catacombs, and trust me it gets as exciting an adventure can get. Add up to your travel wishlist, you’re welcome.????

Hidden Tramway 2008
Our familiar habitats are so-often taken for granted, that we miss what is actually there, hidden from our viewing habits. Sites are filled with images, smells, atmospheres, abandoned objects, fragments of rubbish (or treasure), memories, histories, traces of past events and forgotten people
Tramway is a found site celebrated by artists and audiences who recognise it as a space of possibility. An unresolved space awaiting creative interpretation. Treating the found site as a creative partner, seven of Scotlands leading poets have created a suite of poems inspired by a location deep in the heart of Tramway that is usually passed by and unnoticed. This collection characterises a diverse range of cultural experience and heritage which is reflective of Glasgow and particularly of Tramways local community. Each poet has explored a particular space leading to a unique and personal insight into spaces inscribed with the memories of people, work and activity.

A brief look at the Yard of Lost Toys in #Lviv, #Ukraine with #Fotostrasse
—
Close to the center of Lviv, there is a makeshift museum of sorts. This unlikely tourist spot can be found on a typical urban courtyard, but this is far from ordinary. The Yard of Lost Toys in Lviv is an unbelievable exhibition and could be described as the toys the world left behind.
I visited Lviv, one of the most beautiful cities in Eastern Europe, at the end of August 2018. When I first started researching things to do and places to visit in Lviv, one unlikely tourist spot kept popping up on my search results. Some images featured plush toys left outside an apartment building, and this was enough to capture my attention and make me look for it when I arrived in Lviv.

Odessa World War II Partisan Catacombs
It was time to go underground into catacombs used for secret activities during World War II by Partisans. The catacombs are manmade and relatively new. That is, if you consider 200 years old new. Soft limestone allowed quarrying of building material that most of Odessa's palaces were built from resulting in an extensive network of tunnels under Odessa.
Viking guide Olga said, In a straight line, the tunnels would stretch from Odessa to St. Petersburg. Please ignore the darkness in both this video and video tomorrow; we were underground with hardly any lighting but hopefully you'll still find the catacombs interesting. We did...

Odessa WWII Partisan Catacombs Part II
Officially called the Museum of Partisan Glory, the catacombs consist of three levels and reach a depth of 60 meters/120 feet below sea level. Only the middle level is open for tourists.
During World War II the catacombs served as hiding places for Soviet partisans and the very interesting tour took us past areas divided into a kitchen, field hospital, separate alcove for women partisans, armaments, etc. The Germans tried in vain to penetrate the catacombs by flooding with water, gas, and troops but partisans managed to survive.
I can't even imagine living like this for days that stretched into years, underground. The tour ends in a small museum with photographs, art, and documents devoted to the partisan history.

Mysteries, military bases & monks: RT goes deeper underground
Many interesting things are hidden under the ground. In Odessa, Ukraine, man-made caves are scattered across the region and are 2,500 km long. These so-called catacombs were home to partisan bases during World War II. In Vladivostok - the main Russian military naval base in the Far East - engineers built a fortress at the beginning of the 20th century. Also, the largest underground Russian church is hidden in Penza. Find more details on RT.
