Sedlescombe Organic Vineyard Intro
Roy Cook who founded Sedlescombe, Englnd's oldest organic vineyard back in 1979, talks about his passion for organics and how he got started with growing vines in England. In 2010 Roy converted his vineyards to biodynamic methods and later that year launched England's first Demeter (biodynamic) certified English wine, the aptly named 'First Release'. Sedlescombe Organic Vineyard continues to use this name for it's flagship dry white wine. This pioneering vineyard also produces other whites, rosé and, uniquely amongst english vineyards, an oak matured red wine. This is produced from the variety 'Regent' - a partly disease resistant newly developed variety ideal for organic and biodynamic cultivation, and producing a hot climate style of red even in cooler climates. Sedlescombe also produces exceptionally good Sparkling Wines, and are set to launch the UK's first BIODYNAMIC sparkling wine early in 2013. This wine has had 2 years on the lees (yeast deposit) during secondary fermentation and is eagerly anticipated by winemaker and customers alike!

Sedlescombe 2014 CORYMBUS English RED Organic Wine
WINEMAKERS COMMENT
Corýmbus. n.s. Latin. It, in general, signifies the top of any thing - bunches or clusters of berries of ivy, or the like. Samuel Johnson's English Dictionary 1755.
This Rondo, Regent and Dornfelder blend is certainly the top of our reds! - and we have made some exceptional ones over the years, including the first English red to win an International award in 2013. This is a hot climate style of red delivered in our cool northerly climate. Red wines are often better as blends of several varieties, and this particular wine is no exception. These varieties are also particularly well suited to organic growing as they are very resistant to powdery mildew and partly resistant to downy mildew and require only 3 sprays instead of the usual 8.
We hand pick only the best bunches for this red and then de-stalk and crush and ferment ‘on-the-pulp’ for 10 days. This wine then undergoes a malo-lactic ferment to convert the harsh malic acid to the softer lactic acid before infusion with oak for 5 months.
TASTING NOTE
Deep, dark red almost black with violet edge. Young nose of green pepper and roasted coffee. Fresh black fruit flavours reminiscent of Blackberry, Blackcurrant, Blueberries and some Black Olives. Medium to full-bodied, exquisitely balanced with a trace of smokey oak character and a dash of velvet tannin. A great red to go with those luxuriant weightier dishes, including medium cheeses, and even dark chocolate. Quite complex.

Vine Canes Mechanical Summer Trimming
The wet summer of 2012 meant Sedlescombe biodynamic vines had exceptionally long cane growth. Unfortunately the grape crop was pretty low, but the canes, well they got pretty long! To cut them back Sedlescombe's owner/wine-maker Roy Cook used a mechanical trimmer attached to the front of our MF135 tractor. Here you can see him operating this machine cutting the canes on 10 year old Sedlescombe Regent red vines. The machine bolts onto the front of the tractor and is powered by hydraulic motors fed from an oil reserve tank attached to the rear hydraulic arms of the tractor.

Vines & Wines - England's Leading Organic Winery
As the UK's oldest organic vineyard, Sedlescombe, established in 1979, naturally has a rich heritage. The vineyard was established from Owner and Winemaker Roy Cook's dream of self sufficiency and continues with these conservationist principles today.
In 2013 Sedlescombe became the first English vineyard to gain an international award for RED wine when its 2011 Regent won Silver at the International Organic wine Awards scoring more points than 53 other wines from established wine producing countries. In 2015 Sedlescombe’s 2010 Regent went one better and was awarded GOLD as was Sedlescombe 2013 Pinot Noir-Chardonnay Brut Sparkling Wine.
